# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Inverness? Don't Start It

If you have not turned on the engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has come to rest in Inverness or the remainder of Highland, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Our team will explain what your next stage will be. Contact us — it goes before anything else.

## What to do now about petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for a couple of miles. People have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never start the vehicle. And if started, never depend on it: your fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. That is why the car's ignition is left off also — switch it on and you usually prime that system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for just those parts.

- Never tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it only gives you a larger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort, and we'd rather get to an odd location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Academy Street, put your hazards on then leave the vehicle there.

- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning IV1 1, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.

- What got in, about how many litres, and if the car has run — these three facts settle the entire call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Quarter past eight. A rushed fill-up on the road in. Around eleven it occurs to you, and by then the diesel Volkswagen Golf has sat at the nearest station for three hours. Phone then leave the vehicle where it sits. What matters is the journey in, since diesel both combusts and — before that — protects your pump and the fuel injectors, whereas petrol only ever burns. Those few miles worked your pump on a liquid stripped of a great deal of its protection, and no quantity of standing in a car park puts any of that back. Hence the question about mileage rather than hours sitting, and hence the advice to leave the keys alone till our engineers arrive.

## Can petrol be drained out of your diesel on a forecourt?

The job kicks off at the pump, usually. Quite often the work wraps up at one as well.

Still at BP? Then that is normally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the site.

The forecourt is the one location this gets caught before your engine has started.

We can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past the tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for your key are what settle that.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get through. Take the assistance.

Moving the car four bays does not justify starting it.

If you've put petrol in your diesel Renault Megane in Inverness and you're now stranded at Co-op Food with a boot loaded with shopping, phone. Never start the car a second time to get out of that spot. Our technicians will come to you, empty the tank, flush the fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can drive away. A mile or so at light throttle pulls very little of it, which is why those are usually the easy ones.

## Places our vans serve in Inverness

As a coastal city, Inverness sees a frequent call, while the places close by come with it on that same run: Glebe and Crown, Citadel and Haugh, Merkinch.

Our engineers do come. Those names above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for most places in Highland, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Contact us to enquire rather than presuming, especially when you're on the border or somewhere your phone struggles with.

The area the page covers is on our map.

The lot is territory our engineers work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't move the car anywhere.

Hazards on. Ignition off. Phone. It's twenty to nine by the local primary school, you are late, and the till receipt says unleaded — and though three miles in your Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing, fuel is metered to demand, and a rushed drive asks for plenty of it.

## Broken down at the kerbside near Inverness

Not everybody has a chance to pull in somewhere safe.

If you noticed after setting off and landed on the verge on Margaret Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a routine call for us instead of a rare one.

Remain by your car when it is wise to wait in it, yet out of the vehicle when it's not.

Do not start it up to reach a nicer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into the system.

However awkward the location, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than driving on.

What our technicians will ask is if the trip there was brief and chilly, because that is where petrol is slowest to burn properly — and what doesn't burn can get past the rings then into the sump. Right up to the moment somebody drives it home, a diesel Peugeot 308 parked in the parking area at Esco Bar holding a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing worsens while it stands, and so leave the car there overnight then ring us in the morning.

## Petrol in a diesel, and your car has travelled

This is where the local M90 matters, over 50 miles away from Inverness.

It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

It changes what our technicians bring, so mention it when you call: on a longer trip — anything close to the over 50 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

## A little about Inverness

Inverness is a city situated on the northeastern coast of Scotland, near the mouth of the River Ness, and is the administrative centre of the Highland council area. Inverness sits at a low elevation of around 12 metres above sea level, looking out over the Moray Firth. Inverness is a significant urban centre, with nearby places including Glebe, Crown, and Citadel, and is characterised by its predominant semi-detached housing stock.

## What follows when our technicians arrive with you in Inverness

- The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.

- Your tank gets cleared completely.

- What is remaining in your system should not be what created the issue, so your fuel lines get cleaned and the fuel filter cleared.

- Our technicians put clean diesel in and bleed the system.

- After it is turned on, our engineers make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That has the car ready to drive away.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been caught quickly, and as everything is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Inverness is a different job

Don't crank it: that opening rule stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself.

Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Inverness page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Inverness prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page honestly, since the job is not one job. What changes it:

- This is the main one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much the tank can hold.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

A person sure of themselves will tell you to drain the vehicle then put new diesel in. Only half right, that. Try it on a diesel Vauxhall Astra by Victorian Market and your engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here is the problem: there's petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing your engine does is draw it back through the pump again. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Call us. The system gets rinsed, the filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that is what separates a repaired vehicle from one that simply starts.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Inverness drivers

## At a petrol station around Inverness, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians attend Morrisons and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run.

What decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through your fuel system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what takes the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more frequently than motorists fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not a change, so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it does not put back what petrol has thinned.

Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Waiting next to it?

Do not switch the car on again.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the vehicle remain that way.

A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than people fear.

Emptying misfilled motors, Inverness and the rest of Highland, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
