# Jarrow: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on your engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car requires while the fuel is still in that tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has stopped in Jarrow or the rest of Tyne and Wear, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Phone so our team can explain what happens next before you do anything else.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Do not start the car. Started regardless? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run, and so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off happily, for a couple of miles. Most people get that muddled. It isn't okay — the fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.

- Leave the ignition alone too. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is commonly enough to prime the system, which moves that petrol out of your tank then into exactly those parts.

- Never thin it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- We'd sooner travel to an odd spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort than a vehicle that hasn't moved. On the verge on Grange Road, that means hazards on then leave the vehicle.

- Have your position prepared before you call. A postcode starting NE32 3 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van showing up and a van circling.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the engine has been run. Your replies settle whatever follows.

## Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Plenty of the work begins at a forecourt, meaning a good share of it ends up finished at one.

We operate on station forecourts regularly, with the site's consent, and so if you're still at Morrisons that is usually where this drain happens.

At a garage, this gets caught with your motor never run, and nowhere else does that.

We can still put it right where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and driven there, and that sucked fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to reach past that tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

Move the car out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they generally will. The next customer gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Firing it to shift four car lengths is not.

## Areas we reach in Jarrow

Howdon Pans, Hebburn Colliery, Willington Quay, East Jarrow, Campbell Park — all of those on the rounds that carry us out to Jarrow too, a riverside town.

Not on the list? That means nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and the majority of towns in Tyne and Wear have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Contact us and ask instead of guessing, above all if you're on the boundary or somewhere the satnav misreads.

Check the map for the area shown here.

We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and the vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.

A passer-by will advise you to move the vehicle out of the gateway and sort it out later. Don't. A misfilled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags at Dunn Street Primary School is an inconvenience; the same vehicle fired up three more times to be helpful is a fuel system and not a tank. Every restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol through the filter and into the pump. Stay put, let them grumble, then give us a call.

## Stranded at the kerbside anywhere around Jarrow?

Some drivers find no safe place to stop whatsoever.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Ellison Street since you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Safe there? Remain with it. Not safe? Get out and clear of it.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere handier and the mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled.

Driving on causes your car far more harm than our van driving out to an inconvenient spot, and that is no problem for us.

You set off at the end, once our technicians have started it and made sure it runs properly on new diesel, with your system bled. Before that, in the car park outside Ben Lomond, the polluted fuel comes out of your tank, your lines get cleaned and the filter comes off where your Nissan Qashqai has a serviceable one. It all starts with three questions when our engineers reach your car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

Your A194(M) is the road that counts here, and it runs under 3 miles from Jarrow.

It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Pull off at the next sensible junction, switch off, and do not start the car to move it.

It alters what our engineers bring, so say so when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

Your pump isn't turning, and so whatever your diesel Audi A4 did on the way to West Park, none of that is going on now. Nothing gets worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but never drive it home to buy any.

## All about Jarrow

Jarrow is a town situated on the south bank of the River Tyne in north-east England, with a population of around 16339 people. Jarrow has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterized by terraced homes. Jarrow is located near several other notable places, including Howdon Pans, Hebburn Colliery, and Willington Quay, and is approximately 4.7 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne. Jarrow sits at a relatively low elevation of 22 metres above sea level, in a riverside setting that has influenced its development over time.

## Once our technicians arrive with you in Jarrow: what happens

- Three things get established before any price — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- The tainted fuel is drawn from that tank.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left afterwards is not the thing that caused the issue.

- Your system gets primed, on new diesel.

- We turn it on and check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to drive away.

There's no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is spotted soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## Jarrow AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is the same — don't start the car — yet the fault is not.

Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on.

Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Jarrow page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Hire car or company car? Call them before you call us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later. Then phone us about the Mercedes C-Class by Christ Church Community Hall, and do not worry that you cannot say how full the tank was. Almost no one can, in a car they collected two days ago, and our technicians work it out on site. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that blend, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Jarrow

We cannot put one number on this page truthfully, since the job isn't one job. What shifts it:

- This is the big one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank takes.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Whether a van can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the car is.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Somebody certain will tell you to drain the vehicle then put fresh diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Citroen C3 close to Christ Church and the engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here is the problem: there is petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is draw it back through your pump again. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Call us. The circuit gets rinsed, the fuel filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that is what separates a repaired vehicle from one that merely starts.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Jarrow drivers

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Jarrow?

Yes, and it's where a large share of this work gets done.

Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the owner's agreement we visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run.

What decides how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what moves the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more frequently than motorists fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not a change, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has weakened is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate problem. So no.

Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Leave it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle afterwards.

Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Call-out fuel draining in Jarrow and across Tyne and Wear — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
