# Kemble: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not yet been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has ended up in Kemble or the remainder of Gloucestershire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there.

A single call our way is enough: our team shall tell you what comes after this. Do that right away.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — fine enough for a couple of miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't crank it. And once started, never trust it: that fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates — that high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition off too: switching it on is often sufficient to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into exactly those parts.

- Do not tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice implies, and topping up clears nothing — it only hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- We would much rather come to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to handle than a car that has never moved. On the verge on A429, that means hazards on then leave the car.

- Before you ring, work out your location. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts GL7 6 — that's what settles whether the van turns up or circles.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, approximately how many litres, and also whether the motor has fired. These three replies shape your whole job.

The high-pressure pump spent that morning commute running on a fluid that had lost a lot of the protection it is built around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of the fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So picture a diesel Volkswagen Golf, topped up at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked sitting outside the nearest station till you realise around eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that did a good deal, which is why the question our technicians put to you is about miles not hours. Phone us. Leave the vehicle exactly where it is.

## Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel on the forecourt?

Pumps are where the job mostly begins, and where a good part of it finishes.

Still at Esso? Then that's typically where it gets done. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the site.

Before the motor has started — a forecourt is the one spot it is spotted.

The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys decide how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It's not a calamity, and our engineers can still sort it out where your car stands.

Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the car. Worth it.

Firing the car to move four vehicle lengths is not.

## Coverage near Kemble

These same runs get us to Ewen, Kemble Wick, Poole Keynes, Thames Head and Woodlands as well as Kemble, which is a village.

Our engineers still come. The names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of towns around Gloucestershire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage.

Phone to enquire instead of presuming, above all if you're on a border or somewhere your phone struggles with.

The area this page includes is on the map.

Your car does not need to come to us. We operate over all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Kemble: stranded where you parked

Not everybody has a chance to stop somewhere safe.

Set off, then twigged? Landed on the verge of Station Road, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards going? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you sit by the car or step clear of it depends on whether sitting there looks sensible.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the blend further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

Pressing on causes the car far more harm than a van heading out to a tricky spot, and that's no problem for us.

You drive off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and checked it runs correctly on new diesel, with the fuel system primed. Before that, in the car park at The Tavern Inn, the contaminated fuel comes out of the tank, the lines get cleaned and the filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a serviceable one. Everything starts with three questions when we reach the car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has gone

under 10 miles out of Kemble, the M4 is what matters here.

A misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they appear are typically a drop in power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Don't restart it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible exit and turn off.

It alters what our engineers bring, so mention it when you ring: on a longer drive — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the close-fitting components that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel BMW 1 Series travelled, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that run to Highstubs Plantation went, then, and that tank is where to look. Pull in somewhere safe, switch off and call us.

## A bit about Kemble

Kemble is a village in Gloucestershire, situated on the banks of the River Thames, with a mix of rural and riverside scenery. Kemble sits at an elevation of around 112 metres, near the villages of Ewen and Poole Keynes, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Kemble is located near the Cotswold Water Park and is close to the city of Gloucester, while also being within commuting distance of London, approximately 82 miles away.

## Our job in Kemble, step by step

- We check what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- The contaminated fuel comes from your tank.

- Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that created the trouble.

- Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- Our engineers turn it on and confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away.

There is no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

## Kemble AdBlue removal is a separate problem

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — don't crank it — yet the problem is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection the fuel system depends on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Kemble page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Hire car? Company car? Call them before us. Some contracts want the firm to authorise the work, and that is much faster dealt with up front than after that. Then give us a call about the Volvo XC60, the diesel one, close to Kemble War Memorial. Don't worry that you can't say how full that tank was — nearly no one can two days into a car, and it's something our engineers work out there. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mixture, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Kemble

One number wouldn't be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much the tank can hold.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went soft, the idle turned lumpy, and your diesel Renault Captur is now waiting by All Saints. That softness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly not the motor packing up — and because there's no warning for it, vehicles in that position generally get driven a second time before anybody rings. Please don't. Turn it off then ring us.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Kemble drivers

## At a petrol station around Kemble, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this gets done.

Often, provided the site agrees: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our technicians answer straight away.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more commonly than motorists expect.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has diluted is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct issue. So no.

After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, as our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is.

## Waiting next to it?

That engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later on.

Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around Kemble and across Gloucestershire.
