# Kew: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up your engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still in that tank and the engine has not run, which is why it's the coming few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has ended up in Kew or the remainder of Greater London, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Our team will explain what the following move is. Phone — this goes before everything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine for a couple of miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not start the car. And having started, never rely on it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it ignites it protects — your high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be too: turning it on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into precisely those components.

- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- A car that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Lichfield Road? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An awkward location suits us better than a started engine.

- Keep your location prepared before you dial. A postcode that starts TW9 3 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between our van arriving and the van circling.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has fired. Those three answers shape the whole visit.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sat outside Kew Gardens since breakfast? The afternoon has lost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is dormant. It was the run in that pulled diluted diesel through the pump. Ring us before you collect the car.

## Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Most of the work begins at a pump, meaning a fair portion of it is done there.

Still at Shell? Then that's normally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the owner.

A forecourt is the one place it can be spotted before the engine has started.

The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key decide how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where the vehicle sits.

The staff will generally offer to wheel it out from the pump so the next motorist can get past. It is worth doing.

Cranking it just to shift four vehicle lengths is not.

Diesel BMW 3 Series. Some litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Switched off now, outside Orion. That's the phone call our technicians want, since the point beneath it's about volume through your pump instead of hours on the clock.

## Kew plus the villages beside it

As a residential suburb, Kew has a steady visit, while the areas nearby come with it on the same round: North Sheen and Strand on the Green, Grove Park and Brentford, Mortlake.

There are separate pages for nearly all places in Greater London, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing about whether we come.

Ring us and ask instead of presuming, especially if you're on the border or somewhere your phone misreads.

This map is the area this page spans.

We work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and your vehicle never needs to travel to us.

## Stuck on the roadside somewhere in Kew?

Not everybody has a safe place to pull in.

Set off, then twigged? Ended up on the verge beside Sandycombe Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Fine right there? Stay with it. Not fine? Move out and away from it.

Never fire it up to reach a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mix deeper into the fuel system.

Our van driving to a difficult location is no trouble for us, and it is far better for the car than carrying on.

Three replies settle much of the work: what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for them when we reach your car in the car park by Tap on the Line. Then the tainted blend comes out of that tank, your lines are cleaned, and where your Mercedes C-Class has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once fresh diesel is in and the system primed, we start the engine and confirm it runs properly before you pull away.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

The local M4 is the one which matters here, and it runs under a mile from Kew.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Pull off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to move it.

It alters what our technicians bring, and so say so when you ring: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

None of that is the engine failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it is why the ordinary St Luke's Open Space call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Audi A3 drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, your idle uneven and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it passes through; petrol dilutes it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built bleeds past gaps, delivery shows up weaker and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once your fuel is sorted.

## A bit about Kew

Kew is a suburban area in southwest London, situated near the River Thames and close to North Sheen and Strand on the Green. Kew sits at a low elevation of around 10 metres above sea level, and its proximity to Westminster, just 7.1 miles away, makes it a popular residential location. Kew is predominantly composed of flat dwellings, which house its approximate population of 8978 residents.

## Once our technicians reach you around Kew: what we do

- Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that got in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- Away flows the contaminated fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.

- Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.

- The motor is fired up and tested to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

At that point it's ready to set off.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been spotted soon, and as all of this is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

Three things help when you phone from close to Kew Scouts: which side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up next to without blocking the road, and whether the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common spot our engineers work, and so the spot itself is seldom the trouble — we would much rather deal with a tight parking space than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain the Peugeot 208, change your filter where there's a workable one, flush the lines and put fresh fuel through the entire circuit, as by this point the worst of it is sitting in the lines instead of in the tank.

## A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Kew

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — do not fire it up — but this fault isn't.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Kew page. Both are ours to handle.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Kew

We cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, as this job isn't one job. What changes it:

- This is the main one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much that tank takes.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for our van.

Tell us the car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Kew

## At a petrol station around Kew, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair portion of this work takes place there, so yes.

Regularly, provided the site agrees: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our technicians answer straight away.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run.

What determines how much work is required is if that mix has been drawn through the system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable much more regularly than motorists expect.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It isn't a change, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has thinned isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate issue. So no.

After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. We drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with your vehicle?

Keep the car shut off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, and let the vehicle stay that way.

This is recoverable from far more often than people assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in.

Across Greater London and around Kew: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
