# Kings Meadows: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not turn on the motor. While the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not run, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that is determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, all over Kings Meadows and the remainder of Scottish Borders, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive.

Our team can show you what the next move will be. Contact us — this comes before everything else.

## What to try first about petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never start the vehicle. And having started, do not depend on it: that fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.

- Turning your ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition alone.

- Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes — so do not pour diesel on top to weaken it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We'd sooner drive to an awkward place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is easier to handle than a car that has not moved. On the verge on Glen Road, that means hazards on and keep it.

- Get your location prepared before you phone. A postcode starting EH45 9 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and a van circling.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what was put in, roughly how many litres, and whether your car has been started. Those responses determine whatever follows.

## Draining petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

The work begins at a pump, mostly. Often enough the job finishes at one too.

We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's permission, so if you are still at BP that is normally where the drain happens.

The forecourt is the one setting this is halted before the motor has run.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for your key.

The attendants will generally happily push the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. It is worth doing.

Firing it just to move four vehicle lengths is not.

We're in car parks like the one at Sainsbury's all the time, and it is almost never the fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height barrier at the way in, which decides whether a technician can reach you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you ring, and which way your car is pointing. If there's no clearance to work next to the Peugeot 308, our engineers shift it without the motor. That isn't pedantry over a couple of seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of that tank towards your pump, and a vehicle moved twice for a better space is gradually a bigger job than one nobody touched.

## Can our engineers cover your side of Kings Meadows?

Craigerne, Kings Muir, Frankscroft, Craigerne Cottage, Haystoun — all of those on the runs that bring us across to Kings Meadows too, a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all towns in Scottish Borders, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being left off that list tells you nothing at all about if we come.

Phone to ask rather than presuming — county lines particularly, and wherever your satnav tends to misread.

That map shows the patch this page covers.

We work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and your car doesn't need to travel to us.

Shift the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later — that's what somebody will say, and it is wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags by the local primary school, a misfilled diesel Nissan Qashqai is a hassle and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for good manners, it is no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, because priming happens with every start and more petrol goes through your filter on to the pump. Let people complain. Give us a call.

## Kings Meadows: stuck wherever you stopped

Not everyone finds a safe place to pull in.

A normal call for us and not an unusual one: worked out after setting off, landed on the verge on Forest View or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Whether you stay with the motor or move clear of it rests on if sitting there seems wise.

Don't fire it up to get to a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that blend deeper into the fuel system.

However inconvenient the place, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that is much better for the car than carrying on.

Three replies decide much of the work: what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we reach the vehicle in the car park at County Inn. Next the polluted blend comes out of that tank, your lines are rinsed, and where your Audi A4 has a serviceable filter, it comes off. When new diesel is in and the fuel system bled, our technicians start the engine and check it runs properly before you pull away.

## Driven it already? Stop, and check this

This is where the M8 comes into it — under 25 miles from Kings Meadows.

Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Get off at the first sensible exit, turn off, and don't restart the car to reposition.

Long trip? Anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in our van.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and weaker fuel slips past the tightly fitted components that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel Ford Focus went, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and gutless on the way back is how the drive to Jubilee Wood went, then, and the tank is the place to look. Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off and call us.

## A little about Kings Meadows

Kings Meadows is a suburban area situated on the riverside in the Scottish Borders, with an elevation of around 170 metres. Kings Meadows lies approximately 21 miles southeast of Edinburgh and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Kings Meadows is one of several residential areas in the region, including nearby Craigerne and Kings Muir. Kings Meadows has a population of around 2459 people.

## The visit in Kings Meadows, step by step

- Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- The tank gets drained completely.

- We flush the lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what is remaining in your system isn't what created the issue.

- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- After it is fired up, we make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

After that it's ready to pull away.

Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, long-term damage is very rare.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Kings Meadows?

Do not start it: that opening instruction holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself.

The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Kings Meadows has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

## Kings Meadows costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the price is set out below, because the job isn't one job and we cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much your tank takes.

- The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went limp, the idle turned ragged, and your diesel BMW 1 Series is now sitting close to Gytes Leisure Centre. That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly instead of the engine giving up — and because there is no dashboard light for it, vehicles in that position usually get driven once more before anybody rings. Don't. Switch it off then call us.

## Petrol in diesel: common queries in Kings Meadows

## I'm on a forecourt in Kings Meadows. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it is where a big part of this work takes place.

Our engineers work at Esso and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether the motor has run counts a lot more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and leave the car off.

It's fixable far more frequently than motorists assume, even though driving is what takes the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back.

The pump still has to live with it, since the tank still has petrol in it later on.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, because we drain and flush the car wherever it is.

## You, and your car, still together?

Switched off is the way it remains.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the vehicle stay that way.

A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than people expect.
