# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Kingsbridge

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor needs while the fuel is still inside your tank and your engine has not yet run, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Kingsbridge or the remainder of Devon, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Contact us before all else starts, so you will learn what comes after that.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Whenever you drive, your pump and the injectors wear down. This is why you don't fire it up, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off too — flick it on and you often prime your system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for exactly those components.

- Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes — so never tip diesel on top to thin it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Our team would sooner drive to an awkward spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Mill Street, that means hazards on and keep it.

- Know where you are before calling. A postcode starting TQ7 1, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of showing up.

- What was put in, about how many litres, and if the motor has run — the three answers shape the whole visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Taking it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has put real quantity through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return journey would close to double the figure to no end. The Volkswagen Golf can sit outside Ivybridge perfectly well. Call from the platform if simpler; standing over us whilst our engineers work isn't required.

## On a forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

Much of this work starts at a forecourt, so a large chunk of it gets finished there.

The drain typically takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Asda Express? Given the site's consent, that's somewhere our engineers work, and routinely.

Before the motor has started — a forecourt is the single location it is spotted.

The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where the vehicle stands.

Push it out of the way if the staff offer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

## Will our technicians serve your side of Kingsbridge?

As a riverside town, Kingsbridge sees a steady visit, whilst the villages close by go with it on the same journey: Dodbrooke and Westville, Ticket Wood and Southville, West Alvington.

We still come. Those places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of locations in Devon, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Near the boundary, or anywhere the satnav gets wrong? Call us and check rather than guessing.

The map outlines the ground the page includes.

Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of it is territory our engineers work on, and none of that needs your vehicle to come to us.

## Kingsbridge: stranded where you parked

Not everyone gets a safe spot to stop.

A normal call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up on the verge on The Anchor Centre or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Okay there? Stay by it. Not safe? Get out and away from it.

Do not restart your engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into the system.

However tricky the location, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that's much better for the car than carrying on.

The components that should be getting protected are grinding instead, and your car gives no sign of it: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and drives off just fine. Try the trip home from The Quay? Don't. Phone us then leave the Nissan Qashqai where it sits.

## Petrol in a diesel, but your car has rolled

Here is where the local M5 comes into it — under 50 miles from Kingsbridge.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle goes lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Do not restart it to move it. Pull off at the next safe junction then turn off.

Assume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you call. What our technicians bring alters.

## Kingsbridge itself

Kingsbridge is a charming town located in Devon, England, nestled beside a river. It serves as a significant settlement in the South Hams district, boasting a picturesque estuary that stretches towards the sea. The town's scenic riverside setting and proximity to major cities like Plymouth make it a notable destination in the region. Kingsbridge is also known for its market town character, adding to its appeal.

## The visit in Kingsbridge, step by step

- Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that got in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- The polluted fuel comes from your tank.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.

- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- The engine is fired up and tested to make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

That leaves it ready to drive away.

Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been caught early, and since all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a workshop.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and parked your diesel Mercedes E-Class up close to Kingsbridge Evangelical Church a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us then leave it off. The short distance really helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so thinned fuel has reached the fuel filter and the pump — which is why our technicians flush the fuel lines instead of only draining your tank.

## Kingsbridge AdBlue removal is a separate matter

The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — do not start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol weakens your diesel and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Kingsbridge page. Both are ours to deal with.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres sitting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mixture than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mix knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Nearly nobody knows how full that tank was in a car picked up two days ago, and our technicians work that out there. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to sign off the work, and that is far faster settled before than after. Then ring us about the Audi A3 by Kingsbridge Family Church.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Kingsbridge

Our engineers can't put one price on this page truthfully, because the job is not one job. What shifts it:

- This is the main one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much the tank can hold.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and if our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us the car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle lumpy, and the diesel Ford Kuga is parked up near Church of the Sacred Heart. The motor isn't packing up — that sluggishness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, and so motors like yours generally get driven once more before anyone picks up the phone. Don't. Off, and phone us.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Kingsbridge motorists

## I am on a forecourt around Kingsbridge. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

A big part of this work takes place there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there. With the station's consent we attend Texaco and the other forecourts around town regularly.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

What settles how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through your fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off.

It's fixable a lot more regularly than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

## You, and the car, still together?

Never switch it back on.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.

Throughout Devon and around Kingsbridge: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
