# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Kingsdown? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Kingsdown and the remainder of Wiltshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While the engine has not turned over and the fuel is still in the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

Just one ring to us will be enough: our technicians will show you what happens next. Do that straight away.

## The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Never start the vehicle — and don't trust it if it does start. This is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor given diesel normally just cannot run, so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, ticks over and pulls away just fine for a couple of miles. It's not fine. It's wearing out that fuel system as you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition stays off too — turn it on and you frequently prime your system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for just those parts.

- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Remain where you are if you safely can. A motor that has not shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and we'd much rather drive to an awkward location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Jole Close, turn those hazards on then keep it there.

- Know where you are before calling. A postcode beginning SN2 7, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.

- What got in, approximately how many litres, and also whether your car has run — these three facts decide the full call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Never take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through that high-pressure pump in real quantity on the road in, and the way back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is fine. There's no need to stand over that Volkswagen Passat at Swindon whilst the work gets done, and our team would much rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.

## Draining petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

Pumps are where this job usually kicks off, and where a fair part of that closes.

Still at BP? Then that is normally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the station.

Nowhere else but the forecourt can the mistake be halted with your engine still untouched.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it is. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key.

The staff will generally help you wheel it away from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. That is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.

The call our technicians want sounds like this: diesel Renault Clio, a few litres of unleaded, run a couple of miles, now turned off at Aldi. What we are truly asking is how much fuel the pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

## Areas we cover near Kingsdown

Kingsdown is a residential suburb, and our vans go out to it and to anywhere by it on those same runs: Upper Stratton, Penhill, Groundwell, Stratton St Margaret and Pinehurst.

There are pages for nearly all locations in Wiltshire, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list means nothing whatsoever about if we come.

Near a border, or somewhere your phone gets wrong? Call us and check rather than assuming.

The ground the page includes appears on the map.

Every bit of it is ground we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not bring the car anywhere.

Twenty to nine. Outside St Catherine's Catholic Primary School, Swindon. Late already, and the receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Put your hazards on, leave your motor alone, then phone us. You might think three miles is nothing, in the Peugeot 308 or anything else — except that fuel is supplied on demand, and a dash taken in a hurry needs a great deal of that.

## Kingsdown: stranded where you parked

Not everybody finds a decent place to pull in.

Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge of Birdbrook Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you stay beside the motor or step away from it hangs on whether being nearby looks sensible.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled.

However tricky the place, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the car than carrying on.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has rolled

This is where your M4 matters, under 5 miles away from Kingsdown.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the next exit that is safe, stop there, and do not restart the vehicle to reposition.

Long run? Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in the van.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. The pump is not turning, so whatever happened on the way to Nalgo Sports & Leisure in that diesel Mercedes E-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the motor to find more of it.

## All about Kingsdown

Kingsdown is a suburban area in Wiltshire, situated inland at an elevation of 116 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Kingsdown lies approximately 24 miles from Oxford and 70 miles from London, placing it within commuting distance of these major cities. Kingsdown is surrounded by other residential areas, including Upper Stratton, Penhill, and Groundwell, and has a population of around 4505 residents. Kingsdown forms part of the wider urban area in the South West region of England.

## The visit around Kingsdown, step by step

- Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- The contaminated fuel is drawn from the tank.

- What is left in your system should not be what started the trouble, and so the lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.

- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.

- After it is started, our technicians check it runs properly on clean diesel.

After that it's ready to pull away.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught early, long-term damage is very unusual.

Rarely the issue, the spot. On-street is the most common spot we work, and a tight parking spot is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you phone from near Upper Stratton Public Library, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can pull up next to without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the BMW 5 Series gets drained, the filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the fuel lines purged and fresh fuel put through the full system — since by now the worst of that is in your lines, not that tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Kingsdown?

Don't fire it up: that first step holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself.

Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and deposits.

AdBlue removal in Kingsdown has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Kingsdown

We cannot put one number on this page frankly, since this job is not one job. What changes it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much your tank takes.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?

Tell us the car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range.

Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Kingsdown

## Fuel drains on a Kingsdown petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this gets done.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable far more regularly than drivers expect.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no.

Your pump still has to cope with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Waiting next to it?

Keep the engine shut off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from far more frequently than people fear, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.

Draining wrongly fuelled motors, Kingsdown and the rest of Wiltshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
