# Kirkby: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor requires while the fuel is still inside the tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has ended up in Kirkby or the rest of Merseyside, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

One ring to us is enough: our team can show you what follows from here. Do this straight away.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — all right for a couple of miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start the vehicle. And once started, don't depend on it: the fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition remains off also — turn it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol leaving your tank for just those parts.

- Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so never pour diesel on top to thin it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to deal with, and we would rather drive to an odd location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Cherryfield Drive, turn the hazards on then keep the vehicle there.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts L32 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.

- What was put in, roughly how many litres, and whether the motor has run — these three replies decide the whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

## Draining petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

Pumps are where the work usually begins, and where a large part of that closes.

We operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's consent, and so if you are still at Morrisons that's normally where the drain gets done.

At the forecourt, this gets caught with your motor never started, and nowhere else manages that.

Fuel drawn out of the tank and through the filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is switched on and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the fuel lines together with that tank. That's still not a disaster, and our engineers deal with it where the car is. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

The attendants will generally happily move the car clear of the pump so the next driver can get through. It is worth doing.

Moving the car four lengths doesn't merit starting the engine.

## Service around Kirkby

As a riverside town, Kirkby sees a regular visit, whilst the areas nearby go with it on that same journey: Westvale and Kirkby Park, Northwood and Tower Hill, Southdene.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for most locations around Merseyside, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours.

Contact us and ask rather than presuming — borders especially, and wherever the satnav tends to struggle with.

Use this map for the ground covered here.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is territory our technicians work on, and none of it requires the car to move to us.

A diesel pump delivers fuel on demand, and a frantic morning dash asks for plenty — so three miles in your Peugeot 3008 seems like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine at the gates of Kirkby CofE Primary School, already late, a receipt in your hand reading unleaded: hazards on, ignition off, phone.

## Stranded on the roadside anywhere in Kirkby?

Not everybody has a sensible spot to stop.

A normal call for us and not a rare one: realised after setting off, finished up on the verge on Hall Lane or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Fine right there? Wait with it. Not fine? Get out and clear of it.

Never fire up the engine to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into the system.

However tricky the location, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that is far better for your car than pressing on.

Risk the trip home from Brambles? Don't. It will start and it will move off perfectly well, which is the problem — a diesel on a weakened tank behaves usually whilst wearing down the components the fuel should be protecting. Leave the Audi A3 then phone.

## Run it already? Pull over, and see below

under a mile out of Kirkby, the local Kirkby Interchange is what matters now.

It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Get off at the first safe exit, turn off, and don't start the vehicle to reposition.

Long drive? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in our van.

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off then call us. Happy on the way out to Millennium Green, gutless on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; runnier fuel slips past the close-fitting components that build injection pressure; and the farther your diesel BMW 5 Series drove, the less of that pressure it held.

## Kirkby itself

Kirkby is a town situated in the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley, within the county of Merseyside in England. Located on the riverside, it is positioned near major towns, with Huyton and Liverpool being nearby. The town has a long history, originally being part of Lancashire, and is now a significant settlement in the area. Kirkby is known for its substantial size and notable population.

## What follows when our technicians arrive with you around Kirkby

- The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.

- The tank gets drained of everything.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.

- We pour fresh diesel in and prime your system.

- Once it is turned on, we make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

At that point it's ready to pull away.

Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, long-term damage is very unusual.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Vauxhall Astra left by Kirkby Library barely two streets on. Call us, then leave the vehicle off. A short drive does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence purging the lines instead of only draining the tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Kirkby is a separate job

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is the same — do not fire it up — but this fault is not.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal in Kirkby has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. We deal with both.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Kirkby?

Honestly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what changes it:

- This is the big one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.

- Where the car is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range.

If it is not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

By now that tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and the blend goes into your filter, into your lines, into the pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel Mercedes A-Class that made it by Kirkby Market needs its circuit flushed. Draining is not the same thing.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Kirkby motorists

## At a petrol station in Kirkby, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good portion of this work takes place there, so yes.

We work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if we can work there.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mix sucked through it.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more frequently than people expect.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has thinned.

The pump still has to put up with it, because that tank still has petrol in it later.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

The motor remains off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, turn off, and let it stay that way.

A still, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers expect.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Kirkby and throughout Merseyside.
