# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Kirn: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, never switch your engine on, even briefly, to move the vehicle. Stop; leave the car off.

The coming few minutes decide it more than anything else: petrol in a diesel that has not run usually comes down to emptying then flushing, on the spot.

Below is the sequence from this point, wherever in Kirn you happen to be.

## Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

Work through these in order, before you do anything else.

- Bleeding the system draws petrol from the tank towards the parts it harms, and switching the ignition on can be enough to do that. So your keys come out, and your ignition stays off completely.

- Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You are left with a fuller tank of the same mix.

- Near passing traffic? Then the hazard lights come on before everything else, and so the car is simple to spot.

- By hand, never on the motor: that's how it comes off the petrol pump. Get the forecourt attendants to help you push, however short the distance.

- The first thing we will ask is which fuel went in and roughly how much — and the till receipt shows both. Hold on to it.

On the M8, under 15 miles from Kirn, the next junction is the place to come off; anywhere, the first sensible place to stop. Do not push on to the services. Then go back to stage one.

## Kirn fuel drain: has your engine run yet, or not?

Everything after this stage rests on one answer.

If your motor has not run at all:

- The petrol remains inside the tank, and just there.

- The work is a drain and a flush, normally done where the car is.

- This is the best case — which is the whole point of stage one.

If the motor has run, even for a moment:

- Your lines and your filter now hold petrol pulled from your tank.

- Run it farther and that petrol gets to your injectors, having gone through your pump first.

- The farther it went, the bigger the job — the fuel lines, your filter, and now and then more besides.

The line falls there since diesel lubricates your high-pressure pump and the injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't.

In the tank, sitting still, petrol does no harm.

The components that move it are wearing the moment petrol is being pumped.

## What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from Kirn

A technician that circles against a technician that finds you: a little planning is the difference.

- Your whereabouts: a postcode starting PA23 8 serves best.

- Wherever you have parked, the road's name is useful — whether that is Ardenslate Road or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Car parks are found more easily by what they serve: say the one outside The Co-operative Food, and it is straightforward.

- Make and model of your vehicle, and the fact it's a diesel.

- Which got in counts: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Kirn has a page for it. So tell us.

- How much. Litres from your receipt, or how long the nozzle was in the filler.

- Has it run? If so, tell us how far it went, and the way it was driven.

- Whose vehicle it is. Some hire or company agreements want the owner to authorise the work, and that's easier settled before we arrive than after.

Phone 0333 366 0103 once you've got that together — or, if the car is at home, going nowhere, use .

## The wait for a Kirn fuel drain, and what to do in it

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the harm while you wait. So stick to these.

- Where the vehicle has stopped decides where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety before the vehicle.

- A helpful passer-by does not fire it up. Nor does anyone checking it still does the trick, or rolling it a couple of yards.

- Additives remain in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of that petrol out again.

- A home-made drain misses your fuel already gone beyond that tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is risky besides.

- Not for the radio, not for your windows: the ignition remains off.

## When our van gets there: the fuel drain, step by step

- Three questions. What got in, how much, and if it has run. The replies set this job, which is why our quote comes after them but not before.

- Then the tank is drained, so the tainted fuel is taken out.

- Petrol that has moved beyond the tank travels in your lines once it ran, and the fuel lines are purged to shift it.

- Cleaned, or changed if the car has a usable one: the fuel filter is seen to next.

- Fresh diesel in, and the fuel system primed.

- We fire it up only after fresh diesel has gone in and bled your system, then make sure that it is running correctly.

Only once it's running on new diesel do our engineers go.

If it has been caught quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon, and the car goes back to normal driving at once.

## Once your fuel drain is done: driving in Kirn a second time

- Drive normally. There is nothing unusual to do after it has been started on fresh fuel.

- Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under your throttle means pull over then call us back.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was carried out, and so keep your paperwork.

- The handle's colour isn't the guide to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
