# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Knowle Style

Don't fire up the motor. If the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not yet been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that is determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, throughout Knowle Style and the remainder of Staffordshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

A single call our way is sufficient: our engineers shall explain what happens after this. Make it right away.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Never crank it — and don't trust it when it runs. This is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just can't run, so the person stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives off without complaint for several miles. It's not fine. It is eating into your fuel system while you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the ignition remains off as well — flick it on and you commonly prime that system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for exactly those parts.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A motor that has not moved is the simplest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Tunstall Road? Hazards on, and leave the car there. An odd spot suits us better than a started engine.

- Before you call, work out your position. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning ST8 6 — that's what settles whether our van shows up or circles.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, approximately how many litres, and whether the engine has started. These three replies determine the entire job.

## Clearing petrol from your diesel on a forecourt

Forecourts are where this work usually starts, and where a large part of it ends.

Still at Sainsbury's? Then that is usually where it takes place. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the station.

At a forecourt, the mistake is spotted with your motor never started, and nowhere else does that.

Fuel pulled out of your tank and through the fuel filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the fuel lines together with your tank. That's still not a disaster, and we deal with it where the vehicle sits. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Move it out of the way if the staff offer, and they generally will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.

Car parks like the one at Aldi are somewhere we attend regularly, and your fuel is rarely the complicated part. The bay is: cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit on the way in that settles whether a van can access you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way the vehicle is facing. Where we can't work next to the diesel Skoda Octavia we'll move the car without firing it — and that's not pedantry about a handful of seconds of running. Every start primes the fuel system and draws more of the mixture out of your tank and towards your pump, and so a car shuffled twice into a roomier bay has quietly grown into a bigger job than one left precisely where it stopped.

## Can our engineers cover your part of Knowle Style?

As a residential suburb, Knowle Style has a routine call, while the places round about go along on the same round: Newpool and Biddulph, Knypersley and Braddocks Hay, Brown Lees.

If yours isn't on the list it does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all locations across Staffordshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours.

Phone and enquire rather than guessing — boundaries above all, and anywhere your satnav may misread.

The ground the page spans sits on this map.

Every bit of that is ground our engineers serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never drive the vehicle anywhere.

## Stuck by the kerbside around Knowle Style

Not everybody has the opportunity to pull over anywhere safe.

If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge of A527, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that is a common call for us and not an odd one.

Safe where you are? Stay beside it. Not fine? Step out and clear of it.

Never start up your motor to limp the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mixture further into the fuel system.

A technician driving to an inconvenient place is no problem for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

## Driven it already? Pull in, and read this

Your M6 is the one which matters here, and lies under 10 miles from Knowle Style.

It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Long trip? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in our van.

Happy on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that is how that drive to Church Road Recreation Ground went, the tank is the place to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the close-fitting parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the farther your Nissan Qashqai went, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere sensible, switch off then phone us.

## A little about Knowle Style

Knowle Style is a suburban area in Staffordshire, situated approximately 6 miles from Stoke-on-Trent, and is characterised by its semi-detached housing stock. Knowle Style sits at an elevation of around 198 metres, in a region of gently rolling hills and countryside. Knowle Style is located near other local places such as Newpool, Biddulph, and Knypersley, and is home to a population of around 4746 residents. Knowle Style is positioned inland, about 140 miles northwest of London.

## What follows when our engineers get to you around Knowle Style

- Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- Your tank is drained completely.

- What is left in the system shouldn't be what started the problem, and so the lines get flushed and your filter cleared.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.

- It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and we check that it is running correctly.

The car is then ready for you to pull away.

Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

Your pump waits upstream of your injectors, so whatever a worn one gives off moves onward with the fuel — which is why we're blunt about not driving on. Ring us, and leave your diesel Audi A4 where it's near St John the Evangelist.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Knowle Style?

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is the same — don't fire it up — yet the problem is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection the fuel system relies on.

Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Knowle Style page. Both are ours to handle.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you ring us — some agreements want the hire firm to approve the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it after that. Then call us about the Mercedes C-Class near Biddulph Library, and do not worry that you cannot say how full your tank was. Nearly no one can, in a car they picked up two days ago, and our technicians work it out on the spot. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the mix, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

## Knowle Style prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what moves it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much your tank holds.

- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us the car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range.

Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Flushed, not drained — that is what a diesel Ford Kuga which got as far as Biddulph Youth Centre needs. Running a diesel puts that mixture into the fuel filter, the fuel lines, the pump and the rail, none of which empties with the tank, so by now your tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Knowle Style

## Fuel drains on a Knowle Style petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this happens.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's agreement we work at Texaco and the other forecourts locally routinely.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the engine has run counts a lot more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been sucked through the fuel system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then keep the car off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more regularly than drivers fear.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a change and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate problem. So no.

Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Standing next to it?

The motor stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then let it remain that way.

This is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists expect, and a stationary, cold car is the best position to be in.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining in Knowle Style and throughout Staffordshire.
