# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ladyburn? Don't Start It

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still inside the tank and your engine has not yet run, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has stopped in Ladyburn or the rest of Inverclyde, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Contact us and then we shall show you what happens from here before you try much else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually not run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine enough for a couple of miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never fire it up. And if started, do not depend on it: the fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why your ignition is left off too — flick it on and you often prime the system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for exactly those parts.

- Don't add diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it merely hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay still if it is sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on John Wilson Street, anywhere — a difficult place for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a vehicle that never shifted.

- The van showing up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode starting PA15 2, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Get both prepared before you phone.

- Three answers shape the full job: the stuff you poured in, the approximate measure of it, and whether anything has been running since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Phone before you drive it. Petrol into a diesel Renault Clio this morning, and the car outside Cartsdyke ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is idle, and any wear came on the run in, when the pump was drawing diesel that petrol had thinned.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A fair part of the job ends up done at a forecourt, as that's where it mostly starts.

We operate on station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement, so if you are still at Morrisons that's usually where the drain gets done.

At the forecourt, it is stopped with your motor never run, and nowhere else does it.

Fuel sucked out of the tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the lines as well as that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our technicians deal with it where the car sits. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The attendants will generally help you push the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing.

Rolling it four spaces does not merit firing the engine.

The complicated part is the bay, not your fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height barrier on the way in that decides if a van can reach you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one at Birkmyre Stores, say how much room there is around you and which way round your car is. Those our engineers visit often. Should there be no room to work beside the diesel Skoda Octavia, it gets shifted with the motor off, and not out of fussiness over a handful of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the mixture departs your tank for your pump, and two shunts into a better bay have quietly made a worse job of what was merely a motor standing still.

## Coverage in Ladyburn

Bridgend, Gibshill, Cartsdyke, Bogston, Maukinhill — each of them on our trips that bring us across to Ladyburn as well, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on the list it does not mean we never come — there are pages for nearly all locations in Inverclyde, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours.

Presuming is the mistake to resist, particularly on a boundary or anywhere the satnav struggles. Phone and check.

That map shows the ground the page covers.

We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and your vehicle does not need to travel to us.

## Stranded on the kerbside somewhere around Ladyburn?

Not everyone finds a safe spot to pull in.

Set off, then twigged? Ended up along the verge on Quarrier Street, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards going? That's a common call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you stay with the vehicle or keep away from it hangs on if being there looks wise.

Don't start it up to get to a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into the fuel system.

Pressing on does your car far more harm than our van heading out to an awkward location, and that's no bother for us.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

The M8 is the road which counts now, and it sits under 10 miles from Ladyburn.

A loss of power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Presume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our engineers bring changes.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built bleeds past gaps instead, leaving your engine a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting parts it runs through — that is the entire process. It explains the normal Gibshill Forest call too: a diesel Dacia Duster that travelled out without a murmur and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is your engine failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

## Ladyburn itself

Ladyburn is a coastal suburban area in Inverclyde, situated near the cities of Glasgow and Greenock. Ladyburn lies at a low elevation of 19 metres, with its residential landscape dominated by flat-type housing. Ladyburn is close to nearby places such as Bridgend, Gibshill, and Cartsdyke, and is part of the wider Glasgow commuter belt.

## When our technicians get to you around Ladyburn: what we do

- We check what went in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.

- The tank gets drained of it.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.

- Your system gets primed, on fresh diesel.

- The engine is fired up and checked to make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away.

We do all of this wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been spotted early, it is very rare for there to be long-term damage.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Ladyburn?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas this issue beneath it's a distinct one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system relies on.

Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal in Ladyburn has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's frequently the more significant of the two. Our engineers cover both.

Strange places are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical rather than slapdash: the slimmer petrol nozzle fits a modern diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Filled up near Cappielow Park without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes A-Class you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone notices, and miles is what settles how much petrol gets to the fuel injectors.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Ladyburn

What shifts the price is laid out below, as this job is not one job and our technicians cannot frankly put a single price on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much your tank holds.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a van.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Someone sure of themselves will tell you to drain the vehicle and put new diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Citroen C3 close to Lady Octavia Sports Centre and the engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here's the catch: there is petrol left in your filter and the feed lines, and the first thing your engine does is pull it back through your pump again. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Ring us. The system gets flushed, the filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that's what separates a repaired car from one that only starts.

## Ladyburn motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I'm on a forecourt around Ladyburn. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes, and it's where a big share of this work gets done.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the motor has run matters much more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mix pulled through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Driving is what takes the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more regularly than motorists expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores.

The pump still has to put up with it, because that tank still has petrol in it later on.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Waiting next to it?

Leave it turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle afterwards.

A still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than drivers expect.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Ladyburn and throughout Inverclyde.
