# Landrake: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still carrying the petrol and the motor not yet started, almost every job takes only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. Across Landrake and the rest of Cornwall, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

One ring to us is sufficient: our technicians will explain what happens after this. Try this straight away.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Never fire it up — and don't depend on it if it does start. That is the thing motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine fed diesel generally just cannot run, so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, idles and drives away perfectly well for a few miles. It's not fine. It is grinding that fuel system whenever you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the ignition remains off as well — switch it on and you usually prime that system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for exactly those parts.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- A motor that has not moved is the quickest one to deal with, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on School Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An awkward place works for us better than a started diesel.

- Get your location ready before you call. A postcode beginning PL12 5 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between the van arriving and the van circling.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what went in, about how many litres, and if the car has been run. Your replies settle whatever comes after.

How many miles you drove is what our technicians ask about, not how long your motor has been parked — and here is why. Diesel has two roles on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before burning it lubricates that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a fast refuel on the way in, the realisation coming around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf sitting outside St Germans since quarter past eight means those couple of miles were travelled with your pump labouring on a fuel drained of much of its protection. Call us then keep the vehicle just where it stands.

## Can petrol be drained from your diesel at the forecourt?

Pumps are where this work mostly begins, and where a good chunk of that finishes.

We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent, and so if you're still at Texaco that's usually where this drain happens.

Before the engine has run — a forecourt is the single place it ends up halted.

The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for your key settle how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where the car is.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you move the vehicle. Well worth it.

Starting it for four vehicle lengths? Never.

We are in car parks like the one at Waitrose all the time, and it's almost never your fuel that complicates them. It's that bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. At times a height limit at the way in, which settles if a technician reaches you at all. So mention how hemmed in you are when you call, and which way the car is pointing. If there is no space to work next to that Renault Clio, we roll it without the engine. That isn't pedantry over a few seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of your tank toward your pump, and a car shuffled twice for a roomier spot is gradually a harder job than one nobody touched.

## Landrake plus the places near it

Being a coastal village, Landrake gets a frequent call, while the places close by come along on the same round: St Erney and Notter, Trematon and Markwell, Hatt.

Not on the list? It tells you nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and the majority of locations in Cornwall have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

Ring us and enquire rather than presuming, especially if you're on the border or anywhere a satnav can't find.

This map is the patch the page covers.

Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is territory our technicians work on, and none of that needs the vehicle to come to us.

## Landrake: stuck wherever you parked

The chance to stop somewhere suitable does not fall to everyone.

A normal call for us and not an odd one: noticed after setting off, landed along the verge on The Square or at a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Safe right there? Remain beside it. Not safe? Step out and away from it.

Never fire it up to reach a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mixture deeper into the fuel system.

A technician coming to a tricky location is no bother for us, and it's much better for your car than carrying on.

A diesel Peugeot 308 parked in the parking area outside Notter Bridge Inn carrying a tank of petrol in it is an easy job, right up till someone takes it home. Leave the car overnight and call us in the morning. Nothing worsens as it sits. What we will ask about is if the drive there was short and chilly, since that's where petrol is slowest to burn fully — and what won't burn can get past the piston rings then into the engine oil.

## Petrol in a diesel, but your car has gone

This is where the local M5 comes into it — under 50 miles away from Landrake.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they arrive are usually lost power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Never start it to move it. Get off at the first safe junction and switch off.

It affects what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Whatever the diesel Nissan Qashqai did on the way to Landrake Parish Recreation Ground, it is doing none of that now: the pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

## Landrake itself

Landrake is a small village in Cornwall, situated near the coast and approximately 7 miles from Plymouth. Landrake sits at an elevation of around 90 metres, overlooking the surrounding countryside and nearby estuaries. Landrake is characterized by its semi-detached housing and quiet, rural atmosphere, with nearby villages including St Erney and Notter.

## When our engineers get to you in Landrake: what happens

- Our engineers ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies change what the work actually is.

- We drain the tank of all the contaminated fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.

- Your system gets primed, on new diesel.

- The engine is turned on and tested to make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That has it ready to set off.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and as all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Why so direct about leaving your keys alone? Because the pump is upstream of the injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it loses on with the fuel. Ring us. Leave the Audi A4 close to Geffery Memorial Hall.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Landrake is a different matter

Never crank it: that opening step stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself.

Petrol thins your diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal around Landrake has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Landrake

Our technicians can't put one number on this page honestly, since this job is not one job. What shifts it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much that tank holds.

- The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and if a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

## Questions we get about petrol in diesel in Landrake

## I am on a forecourt around Landrake. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes, and it is where a good share of this work takes place.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there is possible.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your engine has run counts much more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend drawn through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving takes the issue along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all.

What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to remain off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different fault and it does not replace what petrol has weakened.

The pump still has to cope with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with your car?

Turned off is how the car remains.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then let it remain that way.

A parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than drivers assume.

Mobile fuel draining in Landrake and throughout Cornwall — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
