# Langside: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never start the engine. If the petrol is still inside your tank and the motor has not turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that's settled in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, across Langside and the remainder of Glasgow City, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

A single call to us will be plenty: our technicians can explain what comes next. Do it right away.

## What to try now about petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a couple of miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start the vehicle. And if started, don't depend on it: that fuel system is wearing as you drive.

- Leave the ignition be also. Diesel has two tasks: it ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates that injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Switching your ignition on is commonly enough to prime the system, which moves that petrol out of the tank then into just those components.

- Don't put diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it merely hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Our team would much rather drive to a tricky place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to handle than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Bellwood Street, that means hazards on then leave the vehicle.

- Get your location prepared before you dial. A postcode starting G41 3 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van arriving and a van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what went in, roughly how many litres, plus whether your car has been run. Your responses decide whatever comes after.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is dormant, so a diesel Volkswagen Passat sitting at Pollokshaws East this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pushed thinned diesel through the pump was the trip in. Phone before you head off to fetch the car.

## Can petrol be taken from your diesel on the forecourt?

The job begins at the pump, mostly. Often enough the work ends at one too.

The drain normally happens right there. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the station's agreement, that's a place our engineers work, and regularly.

Before the engine has run — a garage is the single place the mistake ends up spotted.

Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the key.

The staff will usually happily wheel it out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. That's worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

The difficult part is the bay, not your fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height limit on the way in that settles whether a van can get to you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one outside The Co-operative Food, say how much room there's round you and which way round your car is. Those our engineers cover often. Should there be no room to work next to your diesel Renault Clio, it gets shifted with your engine off, and not out of fussiness over a couple of seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of the blend departs that tank for your pump, and two shunts into a better space have gradually made a bigger job of what was simply a vehicle sitting still.

## Areas our team serve around Langside

Langside is a residential suburb, and so our technicians go out to it and to the villages by it on the same runs: Shawlands, Battlefield, Queens Park, Waverley Park and Crossmyloof.

There are separate pages for the majority of locations in Glasgow City, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off that list says nothing at all about whether our engineers come.

Call us to ask instead of assuming, particularly when you're on a border or somewhere your phone struggles with.

See our map for the ground shown here.

Every bit of it is ground we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never drive the vehicle anywhere.

Your diesel Skoda Octavia will have seemed completely normal on the way back from the local primary school. They all do, and that is the catch with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol motor and it generally won't run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing has happened — meanwhile your high-pressure pump keeps working without the protection your fuel is meant to be providing. Nothing alerts you, since from the driver's seat there's nothing to alert you about. Phone with about how far you drove and how hard you drove it; the second one counts more than the first.

## Langside: stuck wherever you pulled up

Not everybody has the opportunity to stop anywhere suitable.

Set off, then realised? Finished up along the verge beside Camphill Avenue, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That is a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Safe right there? Sit beside it. Not okay? Get out and clear of it.

Do not start up the engine to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into the fuel system.

We'll take our van to a difficult location without any fuss, and for your car that's far better than carrying on.

## Run it already? Pull in, and check below

under 3 miles from Langside, the M74 is what matters here.

It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the next exit that is safe, stop there, and never restart the vehicle to move it.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors, and tell us when you ring. It changes what our engineers bring.

None of it is your engine failing. That's the bit worth hearing, and it's why the normal Scottish Poetry Rose Garden call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Dacia Duster drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, your idle uneven and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision components it runs through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built escapes past gaps, delivery arrives poorer and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once your fuel is corrected.

## Where is Langside?

Langside is a suburban area in Glasgow City, situated near the River Cart and close to several major parks, including Queens Park. Langside is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing and is located approximately 3 miles from Glasgow city centre. Langside sits near the neighbourhoods of Shawlands and Battlefield, and its riverside setting provides a unique environment for residents. Langside is also relatively low-lying, with an elevation of around 32 metres above sea level.

## Once our engineers get to you in Langside: what we do

- Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- Away flows the tainted mixture.

- Our engineers rinse the fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what is left in the fuel system is not what created the problem.

- Our engineers pour new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.

- We start it and check it runs properly on new diesel.

At that point it is ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and because all of it is done where your car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

## A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Langside

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas the problem beneath it is a distinct one altogether.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel.

Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Langside page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Langside

Frankly, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what moves it:

- This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.

- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the car is, and if our van can safely get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range.

For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.

Purged, not drained — that's what a diesel BMW 1 Series which got as far as Tantallon Road Mosque needs. Running a diesel puts that mixture into the fuel filter, the lines, your pump and its rail, none of which empties with your tank, so by now your tank holds the smaller part of the problem.

## Langside drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Langside?

A fair share of this work takes place there, so yes.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there is possible.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It is salvageable a lot more often than people assume, even though driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It's not a change, so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it does not replace what petrol has weakened.

The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, since we drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

## Still with the vehicle?

The engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, then let the vehicle remain that way.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.

Throughout Glasgow City and around Langside: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
