# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lazenby

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Lazenby and the rest of North Yorkshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When the motor has not yet run and the petrol is still sitting in your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Just one call our way will be enough: our technicians shall explain what follows next. Try it first.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- As you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear down. This is why you do not start the car, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Leave the car's ignition be also. Diesel has two roles: it ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates your high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is usually sufficient to prime your system, which carries this petrol out of that tank and into exactly those components.

- Don't pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests, and topping up clears nothing — it simply hands you a fuller tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to deal with, so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Queen Street? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An awkward spot works for us better than a started engine.

- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode starting TS6 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what went in, roughly how many litres, plus whether your car has been run. The replies shape everything that comes after.

## On the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Forecourts are where this work often starts, and where a good share of that ends.

Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that's generally where it happens. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the site.

Nowhere else except the forecourt can this be caught with your engine still unstarted.

Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where it is. It does mean the lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the key.

Attendants will normally chip in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Take the offer.

Moving it four bays does not warrant cranking the motor.

Each start primes the fuel system and draws more of that blend out of that tank and toward your pump — which is why a car moved twice into a nicer bay has silently turned into a bigger job than one left exactly where it stopped. So if we can't work alongside the diesel BMW 3 Series, our technicians roll it without running it. None of that is fussiness about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Heron Foods our technicians visit often, and the fuel is hardly ever the awkward part: the bay is. Vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit at the entrance settling whether our van reaches you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way the vehicle faces.

## Places our team serve in Lazenby

Lazenby is a rural village, and our technicians are out to it and to the areas by it on the usual trips: Lackenby, Wilton, Wilton Village, California and Grangetown.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for most places around North Yorkshire, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours.

Guessing is the thing to avoid, above all on a boundary or somewhere your satnav struggles. Call us and enquire.

Check our map for the patch covered on this page.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of that is territory our technicians serve, and none of it needs the vehicle to move to us.

Put diesel in a petrol motor and generally it won't run, and so the person stops there and the wear stops with them. Swap it — petrol into a diesel — and the car starts, ticks over and drives off as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication the fuel is supposed to be providing. That's the trap, and it is why the diesel Nissan Qashqai will have felt perfectly normal coming back from Wilton Primary Academy. They all do. From behind the wheel there is nothing to alert you about, so nothing warns you. Call us with roughly how far you went, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

## Stuck at the roadside somewhere in Lazenby?

Some drivers get no suitable spot to pull in whatsoever.

If you noticed after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Eston Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a routine call for us rather than a rare one.

Okay there? Sit with it. Not okay? Get out and away from it.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and that blend goes further into the system with every mile travelled.

We will send the van to a tricky spot without any bother, and for the car that's much better than carrying on.

You drive off at the end, once our technicians have started the car and checked it runs properly on new diesel, with the system bled. Before that, in the car park at the pub in the village, the polluted fuel comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a replaceable one. Everything starts with three questions when our technicians get to the vehicle: what was put in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

## Driven it already? Pull over, then read below

This is where the A1(M) comes in, under 25 miles from Lazenby.

A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first junction that's safe, stop there, and don't start it to reposition.

On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you ring. It changes what our technicians bring.

## Lazenby itself

Lazenby is a small village in North Yorkshire, situated inland at an elevation of 34 metres, with terraced housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Lazenby lies near the villages of Lackenby and Wilton, and is approximately 23.5 miles from the city of Durham. Lazenby is also within a reasonable distance of larger urban areas, while still being far from London at 215.5 miles away. Lazenby has a population of around 811 residents.

## Once our technicians reach you in Lazenby: what we do

- Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- Our engineers clear that tank of all the polluted mixture.

- Our technicians purge the fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what's remaining in the fuel system is not what caused the issue.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- The engine is fired up and tested to make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is noticed quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and left the diesel Vauxhall Astra up by Wilton Castle a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us then leave the car off. The short drive truly assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so weakened fuel has reached the filter and your pump — which is why our engineers rinse the lines instead of only emptying the tank.

## Lazenby AdBlue removal is a separate job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas this issue underneath it is a different one altogether.

Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal around Lazenby has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers handle both.

A throttle gone limp, white smoke, an uneven idle, rattling: that is a misfilled diesel Kia Sportage telling you what's wrong. Don't restart the car to find a better place — turn off where you have stopped, close to St Cuthbert or anywhere else.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Lazenby

Truthfully, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what varies it:

- This is the big one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank holds.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is safe for our van.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range.

Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Lazenby motorists

## I am on a forecourt in Lazenby. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Plenty of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Our technicians work at Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

What determines how much work is required is if that blend has been sucked through the fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more often than drivers fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different problem and it does not put back what petrol has thinned.

Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Is the car still with you?

Your engine stays off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it after that.

This is recoverable from far more often than people expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
