# Leagrave: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet run, almost every job takes only a drain, so keep your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes right after the fill-up, and not by the amount that went in. All over Leagrave and the rest of Bedfordshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Our technicians can explain what your next move will be. Call us — this happens ahead of anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

- Do not start the car — and do not trust it when it runs. This is the part motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel normally just will not run, so the person stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, ticks over and drives off perfectly well for several miles. It's not all right. It is grinding the fuel system whenever you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition be as well. Diesel has two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it greases the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Flicking the ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime that system, which moves this petrol out of your tank then into exactly those parts.

- Do not thin it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Stay still if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Filmer Road, anywhere — a tricky place for us beats a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a motor that never shifted.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode starting LU4 9, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three points — what got in, approximately how many litres, and if the car has been run. Your answers decide all that comes after.

## Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on a forecourt?

Pumps are where the work often begins, and where a large chunk of that finishes.

Still at JET? Then that's generally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the site.

At the forecourt, this gets caught with your engine never run, and no place else manages it.

Fuel pulled out of your tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and the fuel lines together with the tank. That is still not a disaster, and we put it right where your car stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you push the car. Very much worth doing.

Cranking the car to shift four car lengths isn't.

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the mileage: a mile at gentle throttle uses hardly any diesel. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane somewhere around Leagrave, a boot full of shopping, and you stuck at Lidl — phone us. Leaving that spot is never worth another start. The tank gets emptied where it sits, the lines flushed, clean diesel in, and you head home.

## Will we cover your side of Leagrave?

Being a residential suburb, Leagrave sees a regular visit, whilst the areas round about go with it on that same trip: Limbury and Marsh Farm, Lewsey Farm and Sundon Park, Chaul End.

Our technicians still come. Those places above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most towns around Bedfordshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage.

On the border, or anywhere the satnav misreads? Call us and enquire instead of assuming.

That map outlines the ground this page covers.

Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and your car doesn't need to move to us.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both ready. The Skoda Octavia will have felt completely ordinary on the way back from Beechwood Primary School — they all do, and that's the snag. Diesel into a petrol vehicle mostly will not run at all: the driver stops, and so does the damage. Petrol into a diesel starts, ticks over, moves off like nothing happened, whilst your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication your fuel should be giving it. No warning comes, as behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

## Leagrave: stuck where you pulled up

Not everyone gets the chance to stop anywhere suitable.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up on the verge on Woodbridge Close, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Okay right there? Remain beside it. Not fine? Climb out and away from it.

Don't start it up to get to a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mixture deeper into the system.

However difficult the place, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has travelled

under a mile out of Leagrave, your M1 is what matters here.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Never start it to move it. Come off at the next sensible exit and switch off.

It alters what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

## Where's Leagrave?

Leagrave is a suburban area in Bedfordshire, situated on the banks of the River Lea at an elevation of around 128 metres. Leagrave lies approximately 30 miles north of London and 12 miles south of St Albans, with nearby neighbourhoods including Limbury, Marsh Farm, and Lewsey Farm. Leagrave has a population of around 10,868 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing.

## Our visit in Leagrave, step by step

- We ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies shape what the work really is.

- The tainted mixture is drawn out of your tank.

- What is left in the system should not be what caused the issue, and so your fuel lines get flushed and your filter cleaned.

- The fuel system gets bled, on clean diesel.

- We turn it on and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Hardly ever the trouble, the spot. On-street is the most common place we work, and a tight parking bay is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from close to Al Falah Community Centre, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can park next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the Mercedes C-Class gets emptied, the filter changed where a serviceable one exists, your lines purged and fresh fuel put through the whole circuit — since by now the worst of that is in the fuel lines, not that tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Leagrave is a distinct problem

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is unchanged — don't crank it — but the fault is not.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal in Leagrave has its own page with the details — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.

The slimmer petrol nozzle slides into a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not careless. Unfamiliar locations see most of that for that reason. So: fuelled up near St Luke's Parish Church without thinking, in a diesel Audi Q5 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone realises, and mileage decides how much petrol ends up at the injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Leagrave

What shifts the price is set out below, because this job isn't one job and we cannot truthfully put a single number on this page.

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much your tank can hold.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for our van.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

The fuel filter, your lines, your pump and the rail: that is where that mix is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with your tank contents. So your tank is not where most of the problem waits by this point, and a diesel Vauxhall Insignia that got near Faizan-e-Mushkil Kusha needs the circuit cleared rather than drained.

## Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Leagrave

## Fuel drains on a Leagrave petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a good part of this work gets done.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers visit BP and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It depends on the ratio rather than the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that blend has been sucked through your fuel system.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It is salvageable much more commonly than motorists expect, even though driving is what moves the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It's not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

That tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Is the vehicle still with you?

Switched off is the way it remains.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then let it remain that way.

A stationary, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than motorists fear.
