# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Leeds?

Never start your engine. While the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not run, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Leeds and the remainder of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

Ring us so we will explain what happens from here before you attempt much else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Do not crank it. Fired up anyway? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally will not run, and so the person stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away happily, for a couple of miles. Most people get that confused. It isn't fine — your fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition alone also: switching it on is usually sufficient to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into exactly those components.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Wait where you are if you safely can. A motor that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort out, and our team would much rather come to an awkward location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Oxford Place, switch those hazards on and keep the car there.

- Our van showing up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode starting LS1 3, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Get both ready before you ring.

- Three details decide the entire call-out: the fuel you put in, the ballpark measure involved, plus whether it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

A large share of the work gets finished at the pump, since that's where it often begins.

Our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the station's consent, and so if you're still at Shell that is normally where the drain gets done.

The forecourt is the one location this can be spotted before your engine has started.

Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the keys are what settle that.

The attendants will generally help you move the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get through. That's worth doing.

Moving the car four spaces does not warrant starting the engine.

The difficult part is that bay, not the fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height limit on the way in that determines whether our van can get to you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one at Sing Kee Supermarket, mention how much room there's around you and which way round your car is. Those our technicians cover often. Should there be no room to work next to your diesel Renault Clio, it gets moved with the engine off, and not out of pedantry over a couple of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the mixture leaves the tank for your pump, and two shunts into a better bay have gradually made a bigger job of what was just a motor sitting still.

## Can we serve your corner of Leeds?

Bagby Fields, The Leylands, Granary Wharf, Camp Field, Little London — every one of those on our trips that carry us out to Leeds too, a city.

If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all places in West Yorkshire, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours.

Contact us to ask rather than presuming, especially when you're on the boundary or somewhere your satnav misreads.

This map shows the ground this page covers.

The vehicle does not need to move to us. We work over all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Leeds: stranded where you parked

A chance to stop anywhere suitable does not come to everybody.

If you worked it out after setting off and ended up by the verge of Portland Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a common call for us rather than an unusual one.

Out of your car when it isn't sensible to sit in it, beside it when it is.

Never start up the engine to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mix further into the fuel system.

Pressing on causes the car far more harm than a technician heading out to an inconvenient place, and that is no trouble for us.

You head off at the end, once we have started the car and checked it runs properly on new diesel, with your system bled. Before that, in the car park by Victoria Family & Commercial Hotel, the tainted fuel comes out of the tank, the fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your BMW 3 Series has a replaceable one. It all starts with three questions when we reach the car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where the A58(M) counts, under a mile out of Leeds.

A misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they appear are generally lost power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Long trip? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in the van.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not only burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built bleeds past tolerances instead, leaving your engine a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built around. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it passes through — that's the full process. It accounts for the usual Mandela Gardens call too: a diesel Nissan Qashqai that drove out without complaint and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that is the bit worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

## About Leeds

Leeds is a major city situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, with its landscape shaped by the River Aire. The city is nestled at the edge of the Pennines, a mountain range in northern England. Leeds has a long history dating back to its humble beginnings as a small settlement, which over time grew into a significant commercial hub. It is now a thriving urban centre with a rich industrial heritage.

## The visit in Leeds, step by step

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses shape what the work really is.

- Our engineers clear your tank of all the contaminated fuel.

- Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later is not the thing that caused the issue.

- Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- When it is started, our technicians make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Then it is ready to drive away.

Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted early, and since all of this is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

Why we're direct about not driving on: the pump waits upstream of your injectors, and so whatever a wearing pump loses moves downstream with the fuel. Leave the Audi A4 near Leeds Town Hall and phone us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Leeds is a distinct matter

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — don't crank it — but the issue is not.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Leeds page. Both are ours to handle.

Clattering, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a misfilled diesel Mercedes C-Class telling you what's wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, near Oxford Place Centre or anywhere else, and do not restart the car to find a better place.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Leeds

Honestly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what moves it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Leeds drivers

## Fuel drains on a Leeds petrol station forecourt

Much of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Jet is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable a lot more regularly than people expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned.

Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, as our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Waiting next to it?

Keep it turned off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off.

Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across West Yorkshire and around Leeds: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
