# Lent Rise: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Lent Rise and the remainder of Buckinghamshire. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. While your engine has not run and the petrol is still in that tank, a drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much got in.

Just one call our way is enough: we will explain what happens after this. Do that right away.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Never start it. Fired up all the same? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally can't run, so the driver stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for several miles. Motorists get that muddled. It isn't okay — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.

- Turning your ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition alone.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes — so don't pour diesel on top to thin it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay still if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Burlington Road, anywhere — an odd spot for us beats a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a vehicle that never moved.

- Before you ring, gather your location. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting SL1 7 — that's what decides whether the van arrives or circles.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what was put in, approximately how much, plus whether the engine has been turned over. The responses shape all that follows.

Quarter past eight. A hurried refuel on the way in. Close to eleven it occurs to you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Passat has stood outside Taplow for three hours. Call us and keep it where it stands. What matters is the drive in, as diesel both ignites and — before that — protects your pump and your injectors, while petrol only ever combusts. Those couple of miles worked the pump on a fluid robbed of a great deal of its protection, and no quantity of sitting in a car park adds any of that back. Hence the question about miles instead of hours standing, and hence the advice to leave the keys be until our engineers arrive.

## Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at a forecourt?

A big part of this job gets done at a forecourt, as that's where it mostly kicks off.

If you're still on the forecourt at Esso, that's normally where this drain happens — we operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.

Before the motor has run — a forecourt is the one location the mistake gets caught.

Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to reach past the tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key are what settle that.

Move the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they usually will. The next motorist gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Cranking the car just to move four car lengths is not.

## Lent Rise plus the areas near it

Lent Rise is a residential suburb, and so we are out to it and to the places by it on those same rounds: Lent, Hitchambury, Burnham, Taplow and Rose Hill.

Our engineers do come. Those places above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all places around Buckinghamshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Call us and ask rather than guessing, particularly when you are on a border or anywhere a satnav gets wrong.

Check the map for the ground included here.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is territory we work on, and none of it requires the car to travel to us.

Your diesel Skoda Octavia will have seemed perfectly normal on the way back from Lent Rise School. They always do, and that is the snag with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it mostly won't run, so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, ticks over and drives off as though nothing has happened — all the while the high-pressure pump works without the protection the fuel is meant to be supplying. Nothing warns you, since from behind the wheel there's nothing to alert you about. Phone us with roughly how far you travelled and how hard you worked it; the second one counts more than the first.

## Stuck by the roadside somewhere around Lent Rise?

Not everybody has a safe spot to pull over.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Lent Rise Road because you noticed after setting off — we take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Stay by your car when it's sensible to be there, and out of the vehicle if it isn't.

Do not restart it to reach a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into your fuel system.

A technician driving to a tricky spot is no problem for us, and it's far better for the car than carrying on.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

The Huntercombe Spur is the road which matters here, and lies under a mile from Lent Rise.

A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Never restart it to reposition. Pull off at the next sensible exit and turn off.

It affects what we bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer trip — anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors.

## All about Lent Rise

Lent Rise is a suburban area in Buckinghamshire, situated inland at an elevation of 41 metres, and located approximately 23 miles west of London. Lent Rise is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock, which dominates the local landscape. Lent Rise sits near the villages of Lent and Hitchambury, and is close to the larger settlement of Burnham. Lent Rise has a population of around 5294 residents, according to recent estimates.

## When our technicians arrive with you around Lent Rise: what follows

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies change what the work actually is.

- That tank is emptied completely.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.

- New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.

- Once it is started, our engineers make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been caught quickly, and because all of this is done where your car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

Three things help when you ring from close to Burnham methodist Church: which side the filler is on, whether our van can stand next to without blocking the road, and whether the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest place our technicians work, so the spot itself is hardly ever the problem — we would much rather deal with a narrow parking space than with a vehicle that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain your Audi A3, change the filter where there is a usable one, flush the lines then put fresh fuel through the full circuit, since by this point the worst of it is sitting in your lines instead of in the tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Lent Rise?

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — do not crank it — yet this issue is not.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and residue instead.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal in Lent Rise has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

Rattling, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a misfilled diesel BMW 1 Series telling you what's wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, by United Reformed Church or anywhere else, and never restart the vehicle to find a better place.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Lent Rise

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what varies it:

- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much that tank takes.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.

- Where your vehicle is, and if our van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

By now the tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and that blend goes into the filter, into the fuel lines, into your pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with your tank contents. A diesel Ford Fiesta that got by St. Peter's Church, Burnham needs its system cleared. Clearing is not the same thing.

## Lent Rise drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Lent Rise petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a large part of this work happens.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's consent our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

What decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more often than drivers assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different issue and it does not replace what petrol has thinned.

Your pump still has to cope with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later on.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Never switch your engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that.

This is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers assume, and a parked, cold car is the best position to be in.
