# Lingley Mere: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still carrying the petrol and your engine not yet started, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is settled in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Lingley Mere and the remainder of Cheshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

A single ring to us is enough: our technicians can explain what follows from here. Make it first.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- Don't fire it up — and do not believe it when it does start. This is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel normally just can't run, so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, idles and pulls away without complaint for several miles. It's not all right. It's wearing out your fuel system whenever you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates — the high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off also: turning it on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into precisely those parts.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that hasn't moved is the quickest one to sort out, and we'd rather get to an odd place than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Bembridge Close, turn the hazards on and keep the vehicle there.

- Before you call, work out your position. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning WA5 3 — that's what determines whether the van turns up or circles.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what got in, about how much, and if your car has been run. Those answers decide all that comes after.

Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, so a diesel Volkswagen Golf parked at Sankey for Penketh this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pulled thinned diesel through the pump was the journey in. Call us before you go to fetch it.

## Removing petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

It kicks off at a pump, mostly. Regularly the work ends at one too.

Still at BP? Then that's usually where it gets done. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the site.

Before the motor has run — the forecourt is the only place this gets stopped.

Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for your key.

Push the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that is worth doing.

Cranking the car just to roll four car lengths is not.

## Lingley Mere plus the areas near it

The same rounds carry us to Lingley Green, Great Sankey, Doe Green, Penketh and Bold Heath as well as Lingley Mere, which is a small village.

There are pages for most towns around Cheshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list says nothing about if our engineers come.

Close to a boundary, or anywhere your satnav can't find? Call us and ask instead of assuming.

See this map for the patch shown on this page.

We operate by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and the car does not need to move to us.

## Lingley Mere: broken down where you parked

Not everybody has the chance to pull in anywhere suitable.

Set off, then realised? Ended up along the verge on Freshwater Close, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Out of the motor while it isn't sensible to sit there, by it when it is.

Never start up your motor to limp it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mix further into the system.

Pressing on does the car far more harm than a van heading out to an inconvenient location, and that's no bother for us.

You drive off at the end, once we have fired it up and made sure it runs correctly on clean diesel, with the system bled. Before that, in the car park by Trigger Pond, the contaminated fuel comes out of that tank, your lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your Nissan Qashqai has a serviceable one. Everything starts with three questions when our engineers reach your car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has moved

The local M62 is the one that counts now, and runs under a mile from Lingley Mere.

It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Come off at the next safe junction, turn off, and don't restart the car to reposition.

On a longer run — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you phone. It changes what we bring.

## Lingley Mere itself

Lingley Mere is a locality situated on the riverside in Cheshire, with an elevation of 22 metres above sea level. Lingley Mere lies near the cities of Liverpool and Manchester, and is close to nearby places such as Lingley Green, Great Sankey, and Doe Green. Lingley Mere has a population of approximately 1148 residents, who predominantly live in detached housing.

## What our technicians do when our engineers reach you in Lingley Mere

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers change what the work actually is.

- We empty that tank of the polluted mixture.

- Our engineers purge your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's remaining in your system isn't what created the problem.

- Our engineers put new diesel in and prime the system.

- When it's fired up, we check it runs properly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to set off.

There's no need for a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Why so blunt about leaving your keys alone? Because the pump is before your injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it loses onward with your fuel. Call us. Leave the Dacia Duster near Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub.

## Lingley Mere AdBlue removal is a different job

The fault isn't the same, though the first step is — never fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and deposits in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Lingley Mere page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anybody notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy issue in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the quantity of petrol getting to the fuel injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a newer diesel filler neck takes the slimmer petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so unfamiliar locations see most of these. Call us from wherever you are, near Jireh Church or not, and we'll come to the BMW 5 Series.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Lingley Mere

We cannot put one number on this page truthfully, because the job is not one job. What changes it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can safely get to the car and work on it, which rests on where the car is.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range.

For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Somebody confident will tell you to drain the car then put fresh diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Citroen C3 by Whittle Hall Community Centre and your engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here's the trouble: there's petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is pull it back through your pump again. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left that tank. Ring us. Your system gets cleaned, the fuel filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that's what separates a repaired vehicle from one that merely starts.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Lingley Mere

## At a petrol station around Lingley Mere, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers work at CNG Fuel Station and the other forecourts around town routinely.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then keep the vehicle off.

It's fixable far more regularly than people expect, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all.

What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct issue. So no.

Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There is no need to bring it to a dealership, since our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

## Still with your vehicle?

Never turn it on again.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off then keep it off.

A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than motorists assume.

Draining misfilled vehicles, Lingley Mere and the rest of Cheshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
