# Lings Common: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet started, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. Across Lings Common and the rest of South Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

Ring us before everything else starts, so you will know what comes from there.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- While you drive, your pump and the injectors wear down. This is why you don't fire it up, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point most people get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually can't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition remains off also — turn it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for exactly those parts.

- Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies — so never tip diesel on top to dilute it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A motor that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on The Orchard? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. An awkward location suits us better than a started motor.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting S66 1, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.

- What got in, roughly how much, and also if the car has fired — those three facts shape your whole visit. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Quarter past eight, a fast top-up on the trip in, and it dawns on you close to eleven — by which time your diesel Volkswagen Golf has been parked outside Rotherham Central for three hours. Phone then keep it just where it is. The trip in is the thing that counts most, because diesel performs two jobs on its way through the engine: it burns, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those few miles were covered with the pump labouring on a fluid that had lost most of the protection it is made for — which is why the thing our engineers ask is how many miles you drove, not how long the car has been standing.

## On a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Much of this work begins at a pump, so a big chunk of it ends up done there.

Still at Morrisons? Then that's normally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Before the engine has started — a forecourt is the single location this gets spotted.

Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean your lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the keys.

The attendants will usually happily move it clear of the pump so the next driver can get through. That's worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

We are in car parks like the one outside Co-op Food all the time, and it is hardly ever the fuel that complicates them. It's that bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height limit at the entrance, which determines if a van gets to you at all. So say how boxed in you are when you phone, and which way your car is facing. If there's no clearance to work alongside your Skoda Octavia, our engineers roll it without the engine. That's not fussiness over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, blend comes out of the tank on to the pump, and a car shuffled twice for a roomier spot is gradually a bigger job than one no one touched.

## Coverage around Lings Common

Wickersley, Bramley Lings, Bramley, Church Field, Listerdale — every one of those on the runs that bring us over to Lings Common as well, a residential suburb.

Our engineers do come. Those places above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of locations across South Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Guessing is the mistake to skip, above all on a boundary or anywhere the satnav fails. Contact us to ask.

The map marks the area this page spans.

The lot is territory our engineers serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't drive your car anywhere.

## Stuck at the kerbside around Lings Common

A chance to pull over anywhere safe doesn't fall to everybody.

A normal call for us rather than a rare one: noticed after setting off, finished up by the verge on Holly Mount or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Out of the vehicle when it is not sensible to be inside, by it if it is.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the trouble: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere better and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled.

A technician coming to an inconvenient place is no bother for us, and it is a lot better for the car than pressing on.

What we will ask about is if that run there was brief and cold, because that's where petrol is least likely to burn fully — and whatever does not burn can slip past the rings and into the oil. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Nissan Qashqai sitting in the car park by The Masons Arms carrying a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing degrades whilst it sits, and so leave the vehicle overnight then call us in the morning.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

The M18 is the one which counts now, and lies under a mile from Lings Common.

It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Pull off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and don't start it to move it.

On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what our engineers bring.

None of it is your engine failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it is why the usual Wickersley Wood call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Audi A6 drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, your idle rough and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting components it flows through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built leaks past gaps, delivery arrives poorer and later and less even than designed, and all of that stops once your fuel is put right.

## A bit about Lings Common

Lings Common is a suburban area situated in South Yorkshire, approximately 8.5 miles from Sheffield, and is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock. Lings Common sits at an elevation of 146 metres, within the gently rolling landscape of the region. Lings Common is close to nearby places such as Wickersley, Bramley Lings, and Bramley, and is home to a population of around 4139 residents. Lings Common is located inland, about 140.6 miles north of London.

## What follows when we arrive with you in Lings Common

- Our engineers check what went in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- Our technicians empty that tank of the polluted fuel.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on isn't the thing that created the trouble.

- Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.

- When it is started, our engineers confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away.

All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, long-term damage is very rare.

About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Peugeot 208 left close to Wickersley Methodist Church hardly two streets on. Call us, and leave the vehicle off. A short hop does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and the pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence cleaning the lines rather than only draining the tank.

## A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Lings Common

The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — don't crank it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol.

Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal around Lings Common has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. We deal with both.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Lings Common

One price would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Lings Common

## I am on a forecourt around Lings Common. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this happens.

Routinely, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something our engineers answer on the spot.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres.

What settles how much work is needed is whether that mix has been sucked through your fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving moves the problem along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores.

The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to put up with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, as our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is.

## Still with the car?

Keep the engine shut off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and let the vehicle stay that way.

A still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people expect.

Emptying wrongly fuelled cars, Lings Common and the rest of South Yorkshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
