# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Little Carleton? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Little Carleton and the remainder of Lancashire. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the motor has not run and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much was put in.

Phone and then our technicians can show you what follows next before you attempt much else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

- Don't fire it up. Turned on all the same? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol car usually won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for a few miles. Drivers get that muddled. It's not all right — your fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.

- Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel performs two jobs: it ignites, and before it ignites it protects that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is commonly enough to prime the system, which pulls the petrol out of that tank then into just those components.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay put if it is safe to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Furlong Crescent, anywhere — a difficult spot for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a car that never shifted.

- Keep your whereabouts prepared before you call. A postcode beginning FY3 7 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van showing up and the van circling.

- What got in, roughly how much, plus whether your car has started — these three details decide the entire visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

## Clearing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

A big portion of the work is completed at a forecourt, because that is where it usually kicks off.

Still at Texaco? Then that's typically where it gets done. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the owner.

Nowhere but a forecourt can the mistake be caught with your engine still unstarted.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key.

Push the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that's worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Dacia Duster, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off at Aldi now. Time passed isn't the thing our technicians need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.

## Will we reach your end of Little Carleton?

As a residential suburb, Little Carleton has a regular visit, whilst the places nearby go along on that same run: Highfurlong and Normoss, Hoohill and Warbreck, Little Layton.

Not on this list? That means nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and nearly all places around Lancashire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Guessing is the habit to skip, above all on a boundary or somewhere your phone goes wrong. Call us to enquire.

Look at our map for the area covered on this page.

Your vehicle doesn't need to move to us. We work over every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Put diesel in a petrol car and usually it won't run, so the person stops there and the harm stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing fires up, idles and moves off as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the protection the fuel is meant to be providing. That is the catch, and it is why the diesel Audi A3 will have felt entirely ordinary coming back from Boundary Primary School. They do. From the driver's seat there is nothing to warn you about, and so nothing tells you. Phone us with approximately how far you travelled, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

## Stranded at the kerbside in Little Carleton

Not everybody has a safe place to stop.

A normal call for us and not a rare one: worked out after setting off, landed by the verge on Leyfield Close or at a lay-by with your hazards on.

Whether you sit with the car or stand clear of it rests on whether being nearby feels sensible.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mix further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

However awkward the place, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than driving on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 5 miles from Little Carleton, the M55 is what matters now.

A misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they come are usually a loss of power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a neat stop.

Take the next exit that's safe, stop there, and never start the vehicle to reposition.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It changes what our technicians bring.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted components it passes through, and petrol dilutes it. That's the full process, and it explains the normal Boundary Park call: a diesel Ford Kuga that travelled out there without fuss and came back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when the fuel weakens, pressure that should build and stay built starts leaking past gaps instead, and the engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed about. None of that is the motor failing, which is the part worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is corrected.

## Little Carleton itself

Little Carleton is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated near the coast and approximately 14 miles west of Preston. Little Carleton has a relatively low elevation of 22 metres above sea level, and its proximity to the coast influences its local climate. Little Carleton is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, which is typical of many suburban areas in the North West of England.

## What happens when we arrive with you around Little Carleton

- We ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies shape what the work really is.

- The tainted mixture is drawn out of your tank.

- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that started the trouble.

- Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.

- Once it's started, our technicians make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves the car ready to set off.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

Why so firm about leaving your keys alone? Since your pump is ahead of the injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it gives off onward with your fuel. Phone us. Leave the Mercedes A-Class by Horsebridge Community Centre.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Little Carleton is a different matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas this problem under it's a different one altogether.

Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue in its place.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Little Carleton page. Both are ours to handle.

## Little Carleton pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the figure is set out below, since this job is not one job and we cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much the tank takes.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Whether a technician can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Fixed and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the circuit: our engineers flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there is a working one. Compare that with the confident suggestion you will get — drain it, refill with new diesel. Half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Citroen C3 near @thegrange and it will start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds plausible. Then the motor draws the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, since emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.

## Petrol in diesel: common queries around Little Carleton

## I'm on a forecourt around Little Carleton. Can you drain it here?

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers visit Gulf and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the fuel system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep it off.

It is fixable a lot more commonly than drivers expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces.

Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is the car still with you?

Leave the car turned off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, turn off, then let it remain that way.

Cold and still, a motor is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around Little Carleton and across Lancashire.
