# Little Herberts: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, across Little Herberts and the rest of Gloucestershire. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. While the engine has not been started and the petrol is still in that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

Our engineers shall explain what the following step is. Call us — this happens before everything else.

## The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Do not start the vehicle — and do not trust it when it fires up. This is the bit people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel generally just cannot run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, idles and drives off perfectly well for a few miles. It is not okay. It is grinding the fuel system as you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it burns it lubricates — that high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition be also: turning it on is usually sufficient to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into just those components.

- Do not water down it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Stay put if it is sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Ash Close, anywhere — an odd place for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a vehicle that never shifted.

- Get your whereabouts prepared before you call. A postcode that starts GL53 8 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van showing up and our van circling.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, approximately how many litres, plus whether the engine has fired. These three answers decide the entire call-out.

The trip in is what pushed weakened diesel through your pump. Standing still has pushed nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, sitting at Cheltenham Spa all day, sits inert in your tank while it waits. Phone first — before your keys turn.

## At a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

Much of the work starts at the pump, meaning a large portion of it is done at one.

Still at BP? Then that is typically where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the station.

A forecourt is the single spot it can be stopped before your motor has run.

Our technicians can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that drew fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get past. Accept the offer.

Starting it just for four car lengths? Not a chance.

The difficult part is that bay, not the fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height limit on the way in that decides if a van can get to you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one outside Lidl, mention how much space there is about you and which way round your car is. Those our engineers attend often. Should there be no space to work next to the diesel Renault Clio, it gets moved with the engine off, and not out of fuss over a few seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of that blend leaves the tank for your pump, and two shunts into a better spot have silently made a bigger job of what was simply a car sitting still.

## Places our team reach around Little Herberts

East End, Charlton Kings, Bafford, Ryeworth, Sandy Lane — each of them on our trips that take us out to Little Herberts itself, a residential suburb.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and most locations around Gloucestershire have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

Ring us to check rather than guessing — county lines above all, and wherever your phone tends to struggle with.

The ground the page includes sits on this map.

The vehicle does not need to come to us. We operate across all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stopped at the kerbside anywhere in Little Herberts?

Not everybody gets a decent spot to pull over.

A normal call for us and not an unusual one: worked out after setting off, finished up along the verge on Cherry Avenue or at a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Clear of the motor while it's not safe to wait inside, by it if it is.

Don't restart your engine to limp the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into the fuel system.

A van heading to an inconvenient place is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for your car than carrying on.

Park it there overnight. Phone first thing. Nothing about a diesel Nissan Qashqai parked in the parking area outside The Merryfellow worsens while it waits, tank of petrol or not, and the job remains a simple one right up until the moment it gets taken home. The question we come with is about that run there: a cold motor over a short distance is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the piston rings into the engine oil.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the local M5 comes in — under 5 miles away from Little Herberts.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.

Take the first exit that's sensible, pull up there, and do not restart the vehicle to move it.

Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our technicians bring alters.

## A bit about Little Herberts

Little Herberts is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Gloucestershire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and a population of around 3998 residents. Little Herberts lies approximately 8.7 miles from Gloucester and 86 miles from London, placing it in a commuter belt with access to the wider South West region. Little Herberts is characterised by its relatively low elevation of 100 metres and its proximity to nearby places such as East End and Charlton Kings.

## What happens when our engineers arrive with you in Little Herberts

- The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.

- The tank gets cleared completely.

- What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the problem, so your fuel lines get cleaned and the fuel filter cleared.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- After it's started, our engineers make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to pull away.

Our engineers do all of this wherever the car has stopped, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

## A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Little Herberts

The issue is not the same, though the opening step is — do not crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which thins the diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Little Herberts page. Both are ours to deal with.

Switch off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — by Kings Hall or anywhere at all. Clattering, an uneven idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfilled diesel BMW 5 Series telling you what is wrong.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Little Herberts

We cannot put one figure on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much that tank holds.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and whether a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

If it is not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the circuit: our engineers flush it, and take your filter off where there's a serviceable one. Compare that with the confident suggestion you'll get — drain the vehicle, refill with new diesel. Half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Citroen C3 near Charlton Kings Library and Children's Centre and it'll start, which is exactly why the advice sounds reasonable. Then the motor sucks the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, as emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

## Petrol in diesel: common questions around Little Herberts

## At a petrol station around Little Herberts, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good share of this work happens there, so yes.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there's possible.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

It is fixable far more commonly than drivers assume, even though driving is what moves the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces.

That tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. We drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## You, and your car, still together?

Leave the engine shut off.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off.

Cold and stationary, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
