# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Llanon?

Do not start the motor. While the petrol is still inside that tank and the engine has not yet been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that's decided in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, throughout Llanon and the remainder of Ceredigion, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway.

Call us before all else happens, so you'll know what follows from there.

## The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Do not fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually cannot run, so the person stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for a few miles. Drivers get that backwards. It isn't fine — the fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition remains off too — flick it on and you often prime that system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for just those parts.

- That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Stryd Fawr, anywhere — an awkward place for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a vehicle that never shifted.

- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode starting SY23 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, approximately how many litres, and also if your car has fired. Those three replies decide the entire call-out.

Never run it home. The commute has already put a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Renault Megane, and the journey back would close to double it for no gain at all. Phone us from the platform if that is quicker. Our engineers do not need you standing over the vehicle outside Aberystwyth while our engineers get on, and we would very much rather speak to you tonight than learn on Monday.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A large portion of this job ends up completed at the pump, because that is where it mostly begins.

If you are still at the forecourt at Texaco, that's normally where this drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the station's permission.

A filling station is the single setting it is stopped before the motor has started.

Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key.

Staff will generally pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get by. Accept the help.

Starting it over four vehicle lengths? No.

## Coverage near Llanon

Llansantffraed, Llanrhystud, Nebo, Pennant, Cross Inn — each of those on our journeys that carry us over to Llanon as well, a coastal village.

If yours is not on the list it does not mean we never come — there are pages for the majority of places across Ceredigion, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours.

Phone to check instead of presuming — borders above all, and wherever the satnav tends to misread.

Look at the map for the patch shown here.

Your vehicle does not need to move to us. Our technicians work over the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stuck by the kerbside anywhere around Llanon?

The opportunity to pull over anywhere sensible doesn't fall to everyone.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Stryd-yr-Ysgol because you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it is the normal kind.

Whether you remain beside the car or step clear of it rests on if sitting in it is sensible.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere better and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven.

Driving on causes your car far more harm than a van coming out to a difficult location, and that's no problem for us.

What we'll want to know is whether the run there was short and cold, as that is where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and anything that doesn't burn can get past the piston rings and into the oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Nissan Qashqai standing in the parking area outside the pub in the village holding a tank of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing degrades whilst it stands, so park the vehicle there overnight and ring us first thing.

## Petrol in a diesel, but your car has travelled

under 50 miles from Llanon, the local M4 is what counts now.

A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the first junction that is sensible, stop there, and never start it to reposition.

It changes what our technicians bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 50 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.

Here is the entire process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the ordinary Coed Gwynfryn call — a diesel Audi A4, out there without fuss and back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it escapes past those gaps rather than building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the engine was built around. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## Llanon itself

Llanon is a small coastal village in Ceredigion, situated near the Cardigan Bay coastline at an elevation of around 24 metres. Llanon lies within a short distance of nearby villages such as Llansantffraed and Llanrhystud, and is approximately 46 miles from Swansea. Llanon is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its role as a residential community. Llanon remains a quiet village with a population of around 917 people.

## Once we reach you in Llanon: what happens

- We ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies shape what the work actually is.

- We empty your tank of the tainted mixture.

- Our technicians rinse the lines and clear the fuel filter, so what's left in the fuel system isn't what started the trouble.

- Our engineers put fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- Once it's started, our technicians confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

That leaves it ready to set off.

Our engineers do all of it wherever your car has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.

Why we're blunt about not driving on: the pump sits before the fuel injectors, so whatever a worn pump gives off passes on with your fuel. Leave the Ford Focus near Llanon Cottage Museum then call us.

## Llanon AdBlue removal is a different problem

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — do not fire it up — but the issue isn't.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system relies on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and build-up.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Llanon page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Llanon pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One figure would not be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much your tank holds.

- The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range.

Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Put right and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the system: our engineers flush it, and take the filter off where there is a workable one. Compare that with the confident suggestion you will get — drain the car, refill with new diesel. Half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Dacia Duster close to Pen-gyrdd and it'll start, which is precisely why the suggestion sounds reasonable. Then the engine sucks the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, since draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

## Questions we get about petrol in diesel around Llanon

## Fuel drains on a Llanon petrol station forecourt

A fair portion of this work happens there, so yes.

Regularly, provided the site consents: Murco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our technicians answer straight away.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

What determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through your fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off.

Driving moves the issue along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different issue from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces.

Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Not at all. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Don't switch the car on again.

Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Mobile fuel draining in Llanon and throughout Ceredigion — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
