# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Locking: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, don't switch your engine on, even for a moment, to shift the vehicle. Stop; leave the car off.

Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is generally a simple drain plus a flush, done where the vehicle stands, and what you do in the next few minutes decides that far more than anything else.

Here is the order of things from here, wherever you are around Locking.

## Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Before anything else, these — following this sequence.

- Keys out of the ignition. Switching your ignition on can be enough to prime the system, and priming draws petrol out of your tank toward the parts it harms. Leave the vehicle off completely.

- A fuller tank of the same mixture is all adding diesel leaves you, since it takes out nothing. So no extra diesel.

- Close to moving traffic? Then the hazards go on before everything else, and so the car is easy to see.

- The staff will normally help you push it clear of the pump. Let them, and roll it by hand — not under your engine, even for a few yards.

- The first question you will be asked is which fuel went in and about how much — and the receipt shows both. Hold on to it.

If you were still driving when you noticed, stop somewhere safe rather than pushing on for the services — on the M5, under a mile from Locking, that means the next exit. Stage one comes next.

## Has it run yet? The fork in every Locking fuel drain

What comes next turns on one answer, and only one.

If the engine hasn't run at all:

- Only your tank has petrol in it for now.

- The work is a drain and a flush, normally done where the vehicle stands.

- Stage one counts for exactly this reason: it's the best position to be in.

If it's been started, even for a second:

- Petrol has been pulled out of your tank, past the fuel filter then into the fuel lines.

- Run it farther and the petrol reaches the fuel injectors, having gone through your fuel pump first.

- Lines flushed, the fuel filter sorted, and sometimes more: this job expands as the miles does.

Diesel keeps your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors protected as it runs through them. Petrol gives them nothing, and that is why the line is drawn there.

A tank of petrol, left alone, damages nothing.

Move the petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts that move it.

## What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Locking

Whether the van goes round or finds you comes down to a little preparation.

- BS24 8 plus the rest of the postcode makes the best way to begin telling us where you are.

- The street or the car park. A road name is a help — B3368, or wherever you have stopped.

- Or the landmark. A car park is quicker to find by what it serves, such as the one at Manor Stores.

- The vehicle. Make, model, plus that it is a diesel.

- What got in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Locking, and so say which.

- How much. Litres from your receipt, or how long the nozzle was in.

- Whether it has run. Then if it has, how far plus how heavily.

- The owner may have to approve the work under some hire or company contracts — which is why it is faster to settle whose motor it is before we get there.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the vehicle is at home with going nowhere — does the trick as well.

## Waiting for a fuel drain around Locking: what to do

Hold to these: well-meant help does the damage during the wait.

- Safety before the vehicle. If it has stopped somewhere dangerous, get yourself away from the traffic and wait away from it. If it's safe where it is, wait with it.

- No one — however kind — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to move the vehicle a short way.

- Additives stay in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of the petrol out again.

- Clearing it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond the tank remains put all the same.

- Not for the radio, not for your windows: the ignition remains off.

## The fuel drain, step by step, once the van arrives

- The quote comes after three queries, not before them — what was put in, how much, and whether it's run — since those answers shape this job.

- Your tank is emptied. The contaminated mix comes out of the tank.

- Petrol that has shifted beyond the tank sits in the lines once it ran, and the fuel lines are rinsed to shift it.

- Cleared, or replaced if your car has a usable one: the filter is seen to next.

- Clean diesel in, and the system primed.

- Starting it. When your system is primed with clean diesel, our technicians start the car and make sure it runs smoothly.

Until it runs on clean diesel, we stay with it.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been noticed early, so your car can go right back to normal driving.

## Locking, after the fuel drain: back on the road

- Started on clean diesel, it asks nothing special of you. Just drive normally.

- The first miles are the test. A warning lamp, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your signal to stop and ring us a second time.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, so hold on to the documents.

- Check the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
