# Longbridge: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Longbridge and the remainder of Devon. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the engine has not been started and the fuel is still in that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much was put in.

One ring our way is enough: our technicians will tell you what happens next. Do that right away.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Do not crank it — and never believe it if it runs. This is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel normally just can't run, and so the person stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, ticks over and drives away perfectly well for a few miles. It isn't fine. It's grinding that fuel system as you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you frequently prime the system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for precisely those components.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- We would much rather travel to an awkward place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Longbridge Road, that means hazards on and leave the car.

- Before you dial, have your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning PL6 8 — that's what determines whether the van arrives or circles.

- Three facts shape the full job: the stuff you poured in, the approximate quantity of it, plus whether anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sitting outside Plymouth since first thing? The wait has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is dormant. It was the drive in that pushed diluted diesel through your pump. Phone before you fetch it.

## On the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

A big part of this job gets completed at a pump, since that's where it mostly kicks off.

Still at Sainsbury's? Then that's usually where it takes place. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the owner.

Nowhere else but the forecourt can it be halted with the engine still unstarted.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a calamity, and our engineers can still sort it out where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys.

The attendants will normally happily roll the vehicle out from the pump so the next motorist can get past. It is worth doing.

Rolling it four spaces does not warrant firing it.

Straightforward, these ones, and the reason is the distance: a mile at easy throttle pulls hardly any of it. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane somewhere in Longbridge, a boot packed with shopping, and you stranded outside The Food Warehouse — phone us. Exiting the spot isn't worth another start. The tank gets cleared where it sits, the fuel lines purged, fresh diesel in, and you get home.

## Longbridge plus the villages near it

Longbridge is a residential suburb, so our team head out to the town and to the villages around it on the usual journeys: Marsh Mills, Crabtree, Leigham, Efford and Eggbuckland.

If yours is not on that list it does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all towns across Devon, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours.

On a border, or anywhere your satnav misreads? Call us to ask instead of assuming.

This map is the patch the page spans.

The car doesn't need to travel to us. We work over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine outside Woodford Primary School, already late, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, ring us. Three miles in the Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel on demand — while a rushed morning run asks for plenty.

## Stranded on the roadside somewhere in Longbridge?

Some drivers have no safe place to pull in whatsoever.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Marsh Mills Park since you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it's the normal kind.

Stay with the vehicle if it is wise to sit inside, but clear of it if it is not.

Never restart the engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mix further into the fuel system.

Carrying on does the car far more harm than a van coming out to an awkward place, and that's no trouble for us.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 50 miles from Longbridge, your M5 is what counts now.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are normally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a neat stop.

Never restart it to move it. Come off at the first safe exit then turn off.

On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 3 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you phone. It affects what our technicians bring.

## Where's Longbridge?

Longbridge is a small suburban area in Devon, situated near the coast and close to the city of Plymouth. Longbridge has a low elevation of around 2 metres, indicating its proximity to the sea. Longbridge is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is located near other suburban areas such as Marsh Mills and Leigham.

## What our technicians do when our technicians get to you around Longbridge

- Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- Your tank is emptied of everything.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.

- Your engine is turned on and tested to make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

After that it's ready to drive away.

There's no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it is noticed quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Why we're direct about not driving on: the pump rests before the injectors, so whatever a wearing pump gives off travels downstream with your fuel. Leave the Audi A6 close to Plymouth Snowsports Centre and ring us.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Longbridge?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas this issue underneath it's a different one altogether.

Petrol weakens the diesel and takes away the lubrication the system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Longbridge page. Both are ours to deal with.

Most of these occur somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical instead of careless — practically no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Ford Kuga, a fill-up near Efford Fort that you didn't think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at your injectors.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Longbridge

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page honestly, because the job isn't one job. What changes it:

- This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.

- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and whether a van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range.

If it isn't pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Longbridge drivers

## At a petrol station in Longbridge, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big share of this work takes place there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the station's consent our engineers visit Esso and the other forecourts locally routinely.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

What settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more regularly than people assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with your vehicle?

Leave it turned off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists assume.
