# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Longbridge? Don't Start It

Don't fire up the engine. While the petrol is still inside that tank and the motor has not turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that's decided in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, across Longbridge and the rest of West Midlands, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway.

Contact us and our engineers can explain what comes next before you do anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- Don't start the car — and never trust it when it fires up. Here is the part most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel generally just cannot run, and so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, ticks over and moves off perfectly well for a few miles. It's not okay. It is grinding your fuel system while you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it protects — the high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition off as well: turning it on is commonly enough to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into precisely those components.

- Do not dilute it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- A motor that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort out, so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Longbridge Lane? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An odd place suits us better than a started diesel.

- Know where you are before calling. A postcode starting B31 2, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.

- Three answers shape the full call-out: the liquid you tipped in, the ballpark measure of it, and if anything has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight. A fast top-up on the road in. Around eleven it dawns on you, and by then your diesel Renault Clio has sat outside the nearest station for three hours. Ring us then leave the vehicle where it is. What is key is the drive in, because diesel both burns and — before that — lubricates the pump and your injectors, whereas petrol only ever ignites. Those couple of miles worked your pump on a liquid stripped of a great deal of its protection, and no volume of standing in a car park gives any of it back. Hence the question about miles rather than hours standing, and hence the request to leave your keys be until we get there.

## At the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

A large portion of the work gets completed at a forecourt, since that's where it usually begins.

If you are still on the forecourt at BP, that's usually where this drain happens — we operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement.

Nowhere else except a forecourt can the mistake be halted with your motor still untouched.

Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is started and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and your lines as well as your tank. That is still not a disaster, and we deal with it where the vehicle sits. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Wheel it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets past the pump, and that is worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

## Service around Longbridge

Longbridge is a residential suburb, and so our vans go out to it and to anywhere around it on the same runs: Cofton Common, West Heath, Turves Green, Rubery and Northfield.

If yours is not on the list that does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for the majority of towns in West Midlands, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours.

Phone to enquire rather than guessing — borders especially, and wherever your phone tends to get wrong.

That map marks the patch the page spans.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground our technicians serve, and none of that needs your vehicle to come to us.

Hazards on. Engine off. Ring us. It is twenty to nine at the gates of St Columba's Catholic Primary School, you're late, and your receipt shows unleaded — and even though three miles in the BMW 3 Series sounds like nothing, fuel gets supplied on demand, and a rushed drive needs plenty of it.

## Longbridge: stuck where you pulled up

Some people get no suitable place to pull over whatsoever.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up along the verge beside High Street, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you remain by the car or stand clear of it turns on if sitting nearby looks safe.

Don't fire it up to get to a better spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into the fuel system.

However difficult the location, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that is much better for your car than driving on.

The parts that should be getting lubricated are grinding instead, and the car gives no sign of that: a diesel on a thinned tank starts and pulls away just fine. Risk the drive home from The Cambridge? No. Call us and leave the Peugeot 308 where it stands.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the car has gone

This is where the M5 comes into it — under 3 miles away from Longbridge.

A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next exit that is sensible, pull up there, and never restart the car to reposition.

It alters what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting components it runs through, and petrol dilutes it. That's the whole process, and it accounts for the ordinary Austin Park call: a diesel Nissan Qashqai that drove out there without fuss and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires your fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when the fuel thins, pressure that should build and stay built starts leaking past clearances instead, and the engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was engineered round. No part of that is the engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is put right.

## About Longbridge

Longbridge is a suburban area in the West Midlands, situated near the River Rea and close to the Worcestershire border. Longbridge sits at an elevation of 171 metres, with Cofton Common and West Heath nearby. Longbridge is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock and is located approximately 6.7 miles southwest of Birmingham city centre. Longbridge is also part of the larger Birmingham urban area, with Turves Green to the north.

## What follows when we reach you around Longbridge

- The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.

- The polluted fuel is drawn from the tank.

- Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that started the problem.

- New diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running properly.

From there, you're ready to pull away.

Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed quickly, and since all of this is done where your car is, it never has to go to a garage.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Longbridge is a different job

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is the same — never fire it up — but the issue isn't.

Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and deposits instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Longbridge page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Strange locations are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical rather than careless: the smaller petrol nozzle fits a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Topped up near Marks & Spencer without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes C-Class you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anyone realises, and miles is what determines how much petrol ends up at the injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Longbridge

Our technicians cannot put one price on this page honestly, because this job isn't one job. What changes it:

- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for our van.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run.

If it is not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Longbridge

## At a petrol station in Longbridge, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good share of this work takes place there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the site's agreement our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mix drawn through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more frequently than drivers fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

## Still with the vehicle?

Your engine stays off.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off.

A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than motorists assume.

On-site fuel draining in Longbridge and throughout West Midlands — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
