# The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Longshoot

Whatever you do, never switch the motor on, even briefly, to move the car. Pause; leave it off.

Petrol in a diesel that has not been run is normally a simple drain plus a flush, done where your car sits, and what you do in the coming few minutes determines that more than anything else.

From here on, in order, wherever you are around Longshoot:

## Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

Work through these before anything else, in this sequence.

- Pull your keys out. Even the ignition on its own can prime the system, pulling petrol out of your tank to exactly the components it damages, so leave the vehicle alone entirely.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of the petrol — it just leaves you with more of the same blend.

- Hazard lights on. If you're anywhere near moving traffic, make the car easy to see before you do anything else.

- The attendants will usually help you push it clear of the pump. Let them, then move it by hand — not on your engine, even for a few yards.

- Keep the till receipt: the fuel and roughly how much are written on it, and they are what our engineers ask for first.

On the M66, under 3 miles from Longshoot, the next exit is the place to leave it; elsewhere, the first safe place to stop. Do not push on to the services. Then go back to step one.

## The fork in each Longshoot fuel drain: has it run yet?

One answer is what everything after this stage depends on.

Not run, not even once:

- The petrol sits inside your tank, and only there.

- Usually it's drained and purged right where your car stands.

- This is the best case — which is the entire point of stage one.

If it's been started, even for a second:

- The fuel lines and the filter already hold petrol drawn out of your tank.

- Run it further and the petrol gets to the fuel injectors, having passed through your pump first.

- Miles is what turns it into a larger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Petrol doesn't lubricate. Diesel does, oiling your pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line sits where it does.

A tank of petrol, left still, damages nothing.

Move the petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts doing the moving.

## What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from Longshoot

A little preparation is the difference between a technician that finds you and a technician that circles.

- Your whereabouts: a postcode beginning BB4 6 serves best.

- The street or the car park. A road name is a help — Hillside Road, or wherever you have stopped.

- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside Co-op Food, for instance — and it is much quicker to find.

- Tell us what your car is — make, model — and check it's diesel.

- What got in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Longshoot, and so tell us which.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from the receipt — either tells us how much.

- The miles it did, and how heavily, if it ran at all.

- Whose vehicle it is. Some hire or company agreements want the owner to approve the work, and that is quicker settled before our engineers arrive than after.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — does the trick as well.

## Waiting for a fuel drain in Longshoot: what to do

The wait is where kindly meant help does the harm. Hold to these.

- Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere dangerous, get yourself clear of the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it sits, wait with it.

- No one — however kind — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to shift the vehicle a short way.

- Anything from the boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes the petrol.

- Emptying it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond your tank remains put anyway.

- The ignition remains off. Even for your radio or your windows.

## Step by step: the fuel drain when the van gets there

- Fuel, quantity, whether it has run: the replies set this job, and that is why we give a quote after them rather than before.

- Then your tank is drained, so the contaminated fuel comes out.

- Purging the lines follows, because a motor that ran has petrol past that tank, in the fuel lines themselves.

- Then the filter: replaced where there's a usable one, cleared where there is not.

- Fresh diesel in, and your system primed.

- Our engineers start it only after clean diesel has gone in and bled the fuel system, then check that it's running properly.

Until it runs on new diesel, our engineers stay with it.

It's very unusual for a vehicle noticed soon to be left with permanent damage, and normal driving resumes at once.

## Longshoot, after your fuel drain: back on the road

- Started on new diesel, it asks nothing special of you. Simply drive normally.

- Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under your throttle means pull over then call us back.

- The work may come up later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep the paperwork.

- Read the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
