# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lower Halstow?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Lower Halstow and the remainder of Kent. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. While your engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still in that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much went in.

A single ring to us will be sufficient: our team will explain what follows after this. Make this straight away.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- While you drive, your pump and the injectors wear down. That is why you do not start it, and why you do not depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Leave your ignition be also. Diesel does two roles: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is commonly enough to prime the system, which moves this petrol out of the tank and into precisely those components.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes — so do not put diesel on top to weaken it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We would rather travel to an awkward location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is easier to deal with than a vehicle that hasn't moved. On the verge on School Lane, that means hazards on and keep the car.

- Get your location ready before you call. A postcode that starts ME9 7 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van arriving and the van circling.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, approximately how many litres, and if your car has started. These three replies shape the full call-out.

Quarter past eight. A rushed top-up on the drive in. At about eleven it hits you, and by then the diesel Volkswagen Tiguan has sat at Newington for three hours. Phone us then keep the car where it is. What matters is the run in, because diesel both combusts and — before that — greases the pump and the injectors, whereas petrol only ever burns. Those few miles ran your pump on a liquid robbed of a lot of its protection, and no amount of standing in a car park puts any of that back. Hence the question about distance rather than hours standing, and hence the instruction to leave your keys where they are till we turn up.

## Removing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

The job kicks off at the pump, typically. Often enough the work finishes on site too.

We operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement, and so if you're still at Berengrave Service Station that is generally where the drain takes place.

Before your engine has run — a forecourt is the single location this is spotted.

The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for your key decide how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where your car stands.

Staff will generally pitch in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Accept the assistance.

Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

How much fuel the pump has sucked is what we're really asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry we hope for sounds like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, some litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now switched off outside Co-op Food.

## Places our vans serve around Lower Halstow

The same trips bring us to Wetham Green, Upchurch, Breach, Ham Green and Hartlip Hill besides Lower Halstow, which is a coastal village.

Not on that list? It says nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and most towns around Kent have a page of their own elsewhere on this site.

Close to the border, or somewhere your phone misreads? Ring us and enquire instead of assuming.

This map is the area this page spans.

All of that is territory our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never bring the vehicle anywhere.

## Kerbside call-outs across Lower Halstow

Not everybody has a chance to pull in anywhere sensible.

A common call for us and not an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up along the verge beside The Street or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Whether you remain with your car or keep away from it turns on whether being in it looks safe.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven.

Driving on causes the car far more harm than our van heading out to an inconvenient place, and that is no trouble for us.

Try the trip home from The Three Tuns? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will pull away perfectly well, which is the problem — a diesel on a thinned tank acts normally while grinding the components the fuel should be lubricating. Park the Peugeot 308 then call us.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

The local M2 is the one that counts now, and it lies under 3 miles from Lower Halstow.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle goes uneven, and there may be smoke.

Pull off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and don't restart it to move it.

Long trip? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the call, as it affects what goes in the van.

## About Lower Halstow

Lower Halstow is a small village on the north Kent coast, situated near the mouth of the Medway estuary at an elevation of around 10 metres. Lower Halstow has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant, and the village is close to nearby places like Wetham Green and Upchurch. Lower Halstow is within commuting distance of London, about 35.5 miles to the west, and is also near the city of Southend-on-Sea, which is 11.6 miles away. Lower Halstow remains a quiet residential community with a population of around 1210 people.

## When our engineers get to you in Lower Halstow: what happens

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers shape what the work really is.

- We empty your tank of all the polluted fuel.

- We purge your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's left in the fuel system isn't what caused the issue.

- Our technicians pour new diesel in and bleed the system.

- After it is started, we confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That has your car ready to pull away.

Our technicians do all of this wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught early, it's very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

Why so direct about leaving the keys alone? Since your pump is upstream of the injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it loses on with the fuel. Ring us. Leave the Mercedes C-Class close to Lower Halstow Memorial Hall.

## A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Lower Halstow

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas the fault underneath it's a distinct one altogether.

Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and build-up.

AdBlue removal in Lower Halstow has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers handle both.

Most of these occur somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical instead of slapdash — practically no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Dacia Duster, a fill-up close to Lower Halstow Church that you didn't think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at your injectors.

## Lower Halstow costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One price would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much the tank can hold.

- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and if a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

## Lower Halstow drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Lower Halstow petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a big portion of this work gets done.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement we attend Asda and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more commonly than drivers fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, since we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Is the vehicle still with you?

Leave it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that.

A parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than drivers expect.

Throughout Kent and around Lower Halstow: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
