# Lower Heysham: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Lower Heysham and the remainder of Lancashire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While your engine has not been started and the fuel is still inside your tank, a drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in.

Ring us before all else starts, so you'll hear what comes from there.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- As you drive, the pump and your injectors wear down. That is why you do not fire it up, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the part people get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Turning your ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition be.

- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Barrows Lane, anywhere — an awkward place for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a vehicle that never moved.

- Our van turning up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts LA3 2, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Get both prepared before you phone.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what was put in, roughly how many litres, and also if the motor has run. Those three answers determine your whole job.

## On a forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

Plenty of this job begins at the pump, so a fair share of that is completed on site.

We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement, so if you are still at Texaco that is generally where this drain takes place.

Before your motor has started — the forecourt is the one spot the mistake gets caught.

Fuel drawn out of that tank and through your filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and your lines together with that tank. That is still not a calamity, and we sort it out where your car stands. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Wheel the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that's worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

The awkward part is the bay, not the fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height barrier on the way in that decides if a technician can reach you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one outside Co-op Food, tell us how much space there's about you and which way round your car is. Those our technicians cover often. Should there be no room to work next to the diesel Peugeot 308, it gets moved with your engine off, and not out of fussiness over a handful of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the blend leaves the tank for your pump, and two shunts into a nicer space have quietly made a worse job of what was merely a vehicle standing still.

## Places our team serve around Lower Heysham

The same journeys carry us to Heysham, Higher Heysham, Sandylands, West End and Middleton besides Lower Heysham, which is a residential suburb.

There are pages for most places across Lancashire, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from that list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come.

On a border, or somewhere your phone misreads? Contact us to enquire instead of assuming.

The map is the patch this page spans.

Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is ground our engineers cover, and none of that requires the car to come to us.

## Kerbside breakdowns in Lower Heysham

Not everyone has a safe place to stop.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Bailey Lane as you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Remain beside your car when it's safe to sit there, and out of the car if it is not.

Do not start it up to get to a safer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into your fuel system.

A van driving to a tricky location is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for the car than pressing on.

Chance the trip home from The Royal at Heysham? No. It will start and it will drive off quite happily, which is the issue — a diesel on a diluted tank acts normally whilst wearing down the parts the fuel should be protecting. Park the Audi A4 then ring us.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the car has moved

The M6 is the one that matters now, and runs under 5 miles from Lower Heysham.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the first junction that's sensible, pull up there, and don't restart the car to reposition.

Long trip? Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in our van.

Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Whatever your diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Glebe Garden, it is doing none of it now: your pump isn't turning. So take your time — but never drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

## Where's Lower Heysham?

Lower Heysham is a suburban area located on the coast of Lancashire, near the city of Lancaster. Lower Heysham sits at an elevation of 18 metres, with views out to the surrounding coastline and proximity to nearby Heysham and Higher Heysham. Lower Heysham is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock and residential community, with easy access to local amenities and the larger city of Lancaster.

## What we do when we get to you around Lower Heysham

- The replies shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.

- That tank gets emptied of it.

- Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running smoothly.

Then it's ready to drive away.

Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and left the diesel Mercedes E-Class up by Heysham Jubilee Institute a few hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Call us and leave the car off. The short hop genuinely assists, but it was still a start and a drive, so weakened fuel has arrived at the filter and the pump — which is why our engineers purge the lines instead of only clearing your tank.

## Lower Heysham AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

The issue is not the same, though the opening step is — do not start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and build-up in its place.

Both are ours. There is a separate Lower Heysham page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some agreements want the firm to sign off the work, and that is much quicker dealt with up front than later on. Then give us a call about the Vauxhall Astra, the diesel one, close to The Spirit of Heysham. Don't worry that you can't say how full the tank was — nearly nobody can two days into a motor, and it is something our engineers establish on the spot. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger blend, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

## Lower Heysham prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what moves it:

- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can sensibly reach the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the car is.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and whether it has run.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

## Lower Heysham drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Lower Heysham petrol station forecourt

Much of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's permission our engineers visit Essar and the other forecourts locally regularly.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off.

Driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable a lot more frequently than drivers fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a modification and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct issue. So no.

That tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to live with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to take it to a dealership, because we drain and clean your car wherever it is.

## Still with your vehicle?

Leave the car shut off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, turn off, then let the vehicle stay that way.

A parked, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than people fear.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Lower Heysham and across Lancashire.
