# Lyndhurst: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started your engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still in the tank and the engine has not yet turned over, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in Lyndhurst or the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Our technicians will show you what your next step is. Ring us — this comes ahead of all else.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — all right for a few miles. People have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And having started, never believe it: the fuel system is wearing down while you drive.

- Switching the car's ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition be.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes — so never tip diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and we'd much rather travel to an odd location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on High Street, put your hazards on then leave the vehicle there.

- A van arriving instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning SO43 7, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Keep both prepared before you call.

- What got in, roughly how many litres, and also if the engine has run — those three replies determine the entire job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

## Draining petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

It begins at the pump, typically. Frequently the work ends there too.

We work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent, and so if you are still at Esso that is normally where the drain happens.

At a garage, this gets caught with the engine never fired, and nowhere else does that.

Our engineers can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past that tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the key are what determine that.

The staff will usually help you move the car out from the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. That's worth doing.

Starting it just for four car lengths? No.

Any start primes your fuel system and sucks more of that mixture out of that tank and on to your pump — which is why a car shunted twice into a better space has gradually grown into a worse job than one left exactly where it stopped. So when we can't work next to your diesel BMW 3 Series, our engineers roll the car without starting it. None of that is pedantry about a few seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Morrisons our engineers attend all the time, and the fuel is seldom the awkward part: that bay is. Cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height limit at the way in determining if our van gets to you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way the car points.

## Do our technicians cover your end of Lyndhurst?

Lyndhurst is a rural village, and so our technicians head out to it and to the villages by it on the usual trips: Custards, Goose Green, Pikes Hill, Emery Down and Bank.

We do come. The places above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all places around Hampshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Ring us and check instead of assuming — county lines above all, and wherever a satnav tends to misread.

The map outlines the area this page includes.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground our technicians cover, and none of it needs your vehicle to move to us.

Each restart primes your lines and draws more petrol through your filter then into your pump. So a misfuelled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags by St Michael and All Angels CofE Infant School is a nuisance, whereas the same car started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system instead of a tank. A passer-by will tell you to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. Leave it, let everyone complain, then give us a call.

## Stuck at the roadside in Lyndhurst

Not everybody has a sensible spot to stop.

A common call for us and not a rare one: realised after setting off, finished up on the verge beside The Boltons or in a lay-by with the hazard lights on.

Okay where you are? Sit beside it. Not fine? Get out and away from it.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to reach somewhere better and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled.

A van driving to a tricky location is no trouble for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Three answers determine much of the work: what got in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for them as soon as we get to the vehicle in the car park at The Mailmans Arms. Then the contaminated mix comes out of your tank, the lines are cleaned, and where your Mercedes C-Class has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once clean diesel is in and your system primed, our technicians start the car and confirm it runs properly before you pull away.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

under 5 miles out of Lyndhurst, the local M27 is what counts here.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they come are typically a loss of power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you phone. It changes what our technicians bring.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst your car waits, because a diesel Dacia Duster parked outside Coles Mead Recreation Ground is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

## About Lyndhurst

Lyndhurst is a village in Hampshire, situated inland at an elevation of approximately 40 metres, and is located near the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth. Lyndhurst lies within the South East region of England, about 76.5 miles from London, and is surrounded by nearby places such as Custards, Goose Green, and Pikes Hill. Lyndhurst has a population of around 1790 people and predominantly features detached housing.

## What we do when our technicians get to you around Lyndhurst

- We establish what got in, how much, and if the motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.

- The tank is cleared completely.

- Our technicians purge the lines and clear the filter, and so what is left in the system is not what created the issue.

- We pour new diesel in and bleed the system.

- Your engine is started and checked to confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught early, permanent damage is very unusual.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Lyndhurst is a different job

The issue is not the same, though the opening instruction is — do not crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue in its place.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Lyndhurst page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Lyndhurst prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our engineers can't put one figure on this page frankly, as the job is not one job. What shifts it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much that tank holds.

- The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a technician.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range.

If it's not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

What takes place next is the trouble. The motor at once draws the petrol still waiting in the fuel filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, as emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put fresh diesel in, a person sure of themselves will tell you — and that tip is half right, since do it to a diesel Citroen C3 parked up, Lyndhurst Library say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Call us instead. Our technicians flush your system and take your filter off where your vehicle has a serviceable one, and that's the difference between the vehicle being put right and the vehicle only starting.

## Lyndhurst drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station around Lyndhurst, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair portion of this work takes place there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's consent our engineers work at Texaco and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run counts far more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend sucked through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and keep it off.

Driving takes the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave it switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Turned off is the way it stays.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and still, a motor is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Call-out fuel draining in Lyndhurst and throughout Hampshire — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
