# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Maes-glas? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Maes-glas and the remainder of Newport. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While the motor has not turned over and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much went in.

Ring us before all else starts, so you will know what happens next.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for several miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never crank it. And if started, don't depend on it: your fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition off as well. Diesel performs two roles: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates that injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, which draws the petrol out of the tank then into just those components.

- Do not put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Sit tight if it is safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Cardiff Road, anywhere — a difficult spot for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a car that never moved.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning NP20 3, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.

- Three details decide the whole job: the liquid you put in, the approximate measure of it, plus whether it has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

## Can petrol be taken from a diesel at the forecourt?

Most of this work begins at the pump, which means a large chunk of it is completed on site.

Still at Tesco? Then that is typically where it takes place. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the site.

Before your motor has fired — a garage is the one setting it gets spotted.

The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for your key settle how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where your car is.

Out from the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the staff help you roll the vehicle. Very much worth it.

Firing the car just to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

Our technicians will come to you, drain that tank, clean the fuel lines and put new diesel in so you can drive away. So if petrol went into the diesel Audi A4 in Maes-glas and you are sat at Heron Foods with a boot loaded with shopping, call us — and don't start the car once more to exit that space. A mile or so at gentle throttle draws hardly any fuel, which is why those are often the simple cases.

## Will we reach your end of Maes-glas?

Gaer, Duffryn, Level of Mendalgief, Glasllwch, Stelvio — each of those on the runs that take us out to Maes-glas itself, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all locations across Newport, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Call us and enquire rather than assuming, above all if you're on a boundary or anywhere your satnav misreads.

That map shows the area this page spans.

The lot is ground our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't drive the car anywhere.

## Maes-glas: stuck where you stopped

Not everybody has the opportunity to pull over anywhere sensible.

If you worked it out after setting off and landed along the verge of Old Cardiff Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that's a normal call for us rather than an odd one.

Whether you remain beside the vehicle or keep clear of it turns on whether sitting nearby looks wise.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: start it up to reach somewhere better and the blend goes further into the system with every mile travelled.

Our van coming to a tricky location is no trouble for us, and it's much better for your car than pressing on.

What our technicians will ask about is if the trip there was short and cold, because that's where petrol is slowest to burn fully — and whatever won't burn can get past the piston rings then into the oil. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Dacia Duster parked in the car park by The Stonehouse holding a tank full of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing worsens whilst it waits, and so leave it there overnight then phone us in the morning.

## Run it already? Pull in, then see below

Here is where your M4 comes into it — under a mile from Maes-glas.

It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Never restart it to reposition. Get off at the first safe exit and switch off.

It changes what we bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision parts it flows through, and petrol dilutes it. That's the entire process, and it explains the ordinary Forest School call: a diesel BMW 5 Series that travelled out there without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs the fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when the fuel weakens, pressure that should build and stay built starts leaking past clearances instead, and the motor gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. None of that is the motor failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.

## Where's Maes-glas?

Maes-glas is a suburban area located near the city of Newport in Wales, situated close to the coast at an elevation of around 15 metres. Maes-glas is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing and is part of the larger Newport urban area. Maes-glas sits near several other local suburbs, including Gaer and Duffryn, and is approximately 1.5 miles from Newport city centre.

## What our engineers do when our engineers get to you around Maes-glas

- Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- Our technicians drain that tank of the contaminated mixture.

- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what caused the problem, so your fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleaned.

- New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- When it's started, our engineers confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That has it ready to pull away.

There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is noticed quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

Three things help when you phone from close to St Thomas' Church: which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand beside without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual spot our technicians work, and so the place itself is hardly ever the problem — we would much rather deal with a narrow parking bay than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain the Vauxhall Astra, change your filter where there's a workable one, flush the lines then put fresh fuel through the full system, as by this point the worst of that is waiting in the lines instead of in that tank.

## Maes-glas AdBlue removal is a separate problem

Don't crank it: that opening instruction applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself.

Petrol thins your diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and residue.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Maes-glas page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Maes-glas prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

We cannot put one number on this page honestly, since this job isn't one job. What moves it:

- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range.

For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your system: we flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there's a serviceable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves advice you will get — drain the car, refill with new diesel. Only half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Citroen C3 close to Ebbw Bridge Baptist Church and it'll start, which is precisely why the tip sounds sensible. Then the engine pulls the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, because emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Maes-glas drivers

## At a petrol station in Maes-glas, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a big share of this work takes place.

Routinely, provided the site consents: Newport City Truck Stop, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our engineers answer on the spot.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run.

What decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off.

Driving moves the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you is not restarting the car.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct issue. So no.

After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.

## You, and your car, still together?

Switched off is how the car stays.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, then let the vehicle remain that way.

Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Call-out fuel draining around Maes-glas and across Newport — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
