# Maghery: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Stop, and leave your motor off — not on, and not for a moment to shift it.

The next few minutes determine it far more than anything else: petrol in a diesel that has not run normally comes down to emptying and flushing, right there.

From now on, step by step, wherever you are in Maghery:

## Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

Work through the following first, in this sequence.

- Priming the system draws petrol from your tank toward the components it damages, and turning your ignition on can be all it takes to do that. So the keys come out, and your ignition remains off altogether.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of that petrol — it just leaves you with more of the same mixture.

- Make the vehicle simple to see before anything else — hazards on — if there's moving traffic anywhere near you.

- However short the distance, starting it to shift it is the thing to avoid. On a forecourt, roll it clear of the pump by hand instead, and ask the attendants to lend a hand.

- The first thing you will be asked is which fuel went in and about how much — and the till receipt shows both. Hold on to it.

If you were still on the move when you noticed, stop somewhere safe instead of pushing on for the services — on the M77, over 50 miles from Maghery, that means the next exit. Step one comes next.

## Each Maghery fuel drain starts here: has the engine run?

From this stage on, everything hinges on a single answer.

If your motor hasn't run at all:

- No place but the tank: that is where the petrol still is.

- A drain and flush, on the spot, is usually all of that.

- This is the best place to be in, and the reason step one counts.

Run at all, even for a second:

- Petrol has been drawn from that tank, past your filter then into the fuel lines.

- The high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors get it on a longer run.

- The job expands with the miles — lines cleaned, filter sorted, sometimes more.

Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors as it passes through them, and petrol does not.

Petrol resting in a tank damages nothing.

Petrol being pumped is wearing the parts that shift the car.

## Before you call about petrol in a diesel around Maghery: what we need

A little preparation is the difference between a technician that finds you and a technician that goes round.

- Your whereabouts: a postcode beginning BT71 6 works best.

- Wherever you have pulled up, the road's name is useful — whether that is Heugh Road or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- What a car park serves is the easiest way to find it, and so mention the landmark — such as the one at the local shops.

- Make and model of your vehicle, and the fact it is a diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has its own Maghery page.

- About how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.

- The distance it covered, and how heavily, if it has run at all.

- The owner may have to approve this work under some hire or company agreements — which is why it's quicker to settle whose motor it is before our engineers arrive.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not time-critical, the vehicle left at home with nowhere to be? Then works too.

## Maghery fuel drain on its way? While you wait

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the harm while you wait. So hold to these.

- Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself away from the traffic and wait away from it. If it's safe where it stands, wait with it.

- Nobody — however helpful — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to shift your car a short way.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, something from your boot — none of that gets that petrol back out.

- No home-made draining. Siphoning petrol into a can by the roadside is dangerous, and it leaves your fuel that has by now gone beyond that tank.

- Ignition stays off. Even for the radio or the windows.

## The fuel drain, step by step, once our van gets there

- The quote comes after three queries, not before them — what was put in, how much, and whether it has run — because those answers decide the job.

- Draining it's how that blend gets taken out of the tank.

- The lines are cleaned. If it ran, the petrol has moved beyond that tank, and your lines are carrying it.

- Cleared, or changed if the car has a usable one: the filter is sorted next.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and your system is primed.

- Starting it. After the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel, we fire it up and confirm it runs properly.

Only when it is running on new diesel do our technicians leave.

When it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very unusual, and the car returns to normal use straight away.

## Maghery, after your fuel drain: back on the road

- Drive normally. There's nothing unusual to do once it has been started on fresh fuel.

- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or your throttle hesitating: pull over and ring us back.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, so hold on to the paperwork.

- Next time, read the pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
