# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Maindy?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across Maindy and the remainder of Cardiff. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While the motor has not yet been started and the petrol is still inside your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much got in.

Ring us before all else happens, so you will learn what follows from there.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- While you drive, the pump and the injectors wear. This is why you don't crank it, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part people get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition is left off as well — flick it on and you commonly prime the system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for just those components.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on North Road? Hazards on, and keep it there. A difficult location suits us better than a started engine.

- Before you phone, gather your location. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting CF14 3 — that is what determines whether our van turns up or circles.

- What went in, about how many litres, and whether your car has started — those three facts determine the entire call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

## Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at the forecourt?

Much of this work starts at a pump, so a good share of that ends up completed on site.

We operate on station forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement, and so if you are still at Texaco that's usually where the drain takes place.

The forecourt is the one location this can be caught before the engine has run.

Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Welcome the offer.

Rolling the car four lengths does not justify starting the engine.

How much fuel your pump has sucked is what we're truly asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry we want goes like this: diesel Nissan Qashqai, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now switched off at Baan Thai Foods.

## Coverage around Maindy

Blackweir, Cathays, Pontcanna, Gabalfa, Cathays Park — each of them on our journeys that take us out to Maindy as well, a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and nearly all towns across Cardiff have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

Phone to enquire instead of assuming — county lines above all, and anywhere your satnav tends to struggle with.

The patch the page spans sits on our map.

Every bit of that is territory our technicians serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't move the vehicle anywhere.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, so have both prepared. The Ford Focus will have seemed perfectly ordinary on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that's the trap. Diesel into a petrol motor generally won't run at all: the motorist stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, ticks over, moves off like nothing happened, while the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning comes, as behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.

## Maindy: stranded wherever you stopped

The opportunity to pull over anywhere safe doesn't come to everybody.

A common call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up on the verge on Herbert Street or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Sit beside the vehicle when it's sensible to sit in it, yet out of it when it isn't.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to reach somewhere better and the blend goes further into the system with every mile covered.

However tricky the spot, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that is much better for the car than pressing on.

The components that should be getting protected are wearing instead, and the vehicle gives no sign of it: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and drives off perfectly well. Try the trip home from The North Star? No. Phone then leave the Mercedes C-Class where it sits.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

Here is where the M4 comes in, under 3 miles away from Maindy.

A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are normally lost power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

Get off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to move it.

It changes what our engineers bring, and so say so when you ring: on a longer trip — anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors.

## A bit about Maindy

Maindy is a suburban area in Cardiff, situated near the coast and approximately 1.4 miles from the city centre. Maindy has a relatively low elevation of 28 metres and is surrounded by other nearby places such as Blackweir, Cathays, and Pontcanna. Maindy is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing stock, which reflects the area's historical development patterns. Maindy remains a popular residential area due to its proximity to Cardiff and its range of local amenities.

## Once our technicians arrive with you in Maindy: what follows

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies shape what the work actually is.

- Our engineers empty your tank of the contaminated fuel.

- What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what caused the trouble, so the lines get rinsed and the filter cleared.

- Our technicians pour clean diesel in and prime your system.

- It is started with new diesel in it, and we check that it's running properly.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away.

All of it is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Peugeot 3008 left close to Maindy Centre barely two streets on. Phone us, and leave it off. A short hop does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the filter and the pump have had thinned fuel through them — hence rinsing the lines instead of only draining that tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Maindy?

The issue isn't the same, though the first rule is — don't start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the lubrication the system depends on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and build-up.

AdBlue removal in Maindy has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is often the more significant of the two. Our engineers handle both.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Maindy

We can't put one price on this page frankly, because the job is not one job. What moves it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much your tank holds.

- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and whether our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

No warning exists for this, which is why cars in that position normally get driven again before anybody phones. Don't be one of them. The throttle went soft and the idle turned ragged after a few streets, and your diesel Citroen C3 is now resting by Saint Joseph's Catholic Church. Deadness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly rather than an engine giving up. Switch off. Ring us.

## Maindy drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station in Maindy, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this gets done.

Our engineers work at Tesco and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving moves the trouble along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back.

That tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to live with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Still with your vehicle?

Keep the car turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car after that.

Cold and stationary, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Maindy and across Cardiff.
