# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Marsh?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Marsh and the remainder of Lancashire. The very first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the motor has not yet run and the petrol is still sitting in your tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much went in.

Our engineers shall explain what your next move is. Call us — this comes before everything else.

## What to do now about petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine enough for a few miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never fire it up. And if started, don't believe it: the fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Leave your ignition alone too. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it ignites it greases the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Switching the ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime that system, which carries this petrol out of your tank and into just those components.

- Never tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it just gives you a fuller tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Ashbrook Street, anywhere — a difficult location for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a car that never shifted.

- A van arriving rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning LA1 5, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Have both ready before you ring.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, about how many litres, plus if the engine has started. Those three facts determine the entire visit.

Quarter past eight, a quick fill on the drive in, and the penny drops close to eleven — by which time the diesel Volkswagen Passat has been standing outside Lancaster for three hours. Phone then leave the car right where it stands. The journey in is the part that matters now, because diesel performs two jobs on its way through the engine: it burns, and before it burns it greases that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those few miles were covered with the pump labouring on a fluid that had shed much of the protection it is made for — which is why the thing we ask is how far you travelled, not how long the vehicle has been stood.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A large share of this job gets finished at a forecourt, as that's where it often starts.

If you are still at the forecourt at Asda, that's normally where this drain takes place — our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's permission.

A forecourt is the single setting the mistake is halted before your motor has run.

The few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key settle how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where your car is.

Roll the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they usually will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth a start.

The phone call our technicians hope for runs like this: diesel Dacia Duster, a couple of litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now turned off at Aldi. What we are truly asking is how much fuel the pump has pulled — not how long ago it was.

## Coverage around Marsh

These same rounds bring us to Abraham Heights, Lancaster, Scale Hall, Haverbreaks and Ryelands as well as Marsh, which is a residential suburb.

If yours is not on the list that does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for most towns across Lancashire, and the ones listed above are just the immediate neighbours.

Assuming is the thing to resist, particularly on a boundary or anywhere your satnav fails. Call us to check.

The area the page spans appears on the map.

Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and your vehicle does not need to come to us.

Twenty to nine by Willow Lane Community Primary School, running late, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, ring us. Three miles in the Peugeot 3008 sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel to demand — while a frantic morning drive needs plenty.

## Stuck by the roadside somewhere around Marsh?

Some people find no safe place to pull over whatsoever.

A routine call for us and not an odd one: noticed after setting off, landed on the verge beside Willow Lane or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Remain by your car when it's wise to sit in it, but clear of the vehicle when it isn't.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere better and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled.

However inconvenient the location, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for the car than driving on.

Leave it overnight. Call us first thing. Nothing about a diesel BMW 5 Series parked in the parking area at Tite & Locke worsens while it sits, tank of petrol or not, and this job stays a straightforward one right up until the moment it gets driven home. The question we bring is about that run there: a cold engine over a short hop is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can find its way past the piston rings into the engine oil.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the M6 comes in — under 3 miles away from Marsh.

A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Do not start it to move it. Come off at the first safe junction then switch off.

It changes what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under a mile to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

## All about Marsh

Marsh is a suburban area located on the coast of Lancashire, near the city of Lancaster. Marsh sits at a low elevation of around 8 metres, close to the shoreline. Marsh is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing and its proximity to nearby places such as Abraham Heights and Scale Hall.

## When we arrive with you in Marsh: what we do

- Our technicians check what went in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The responses change the work, which is why we ask before pricing.

- The polluted fuel is pulled out of the tank.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.

- Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.

- The motor is fired up and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away.

Our technicians do all of this wherever the car has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been caught soon, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.

Calling from near Marsh Community Centre? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it is on. Room for a van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself barely matters: on-street is where our engineers work most, and we'd much rather have a tight space than a motor somebody has driven somewhere easier. Then it is a drain for the Citroen C3, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines rinsed, fresh fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of it is in the fuel lines and not that tank.

## A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Marsh

The problem isn't the same, though the first instruction is — don't crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which thins the diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Marsh page. Both are ours to deal with.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Marsh?

Our technicians cannot put one figure on this page honestly, since this job isn't one job. What moves it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much that tank can hold.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and whether it has run.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Marsh motorists

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Marsh?

A good portion of this work happens there, so yes.

Our technicians work at Esso and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mixture sucked through it.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what takes the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more often than people expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no.

Your pump still has to live with it, because that tank still has petrol in it after that.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Still with the vehicle?

The engine stays off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Marsh and throughout Lancashire.
