# What Happens Now: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Meadowmill

Whatever you do, don't switch the motor on, even briefly, to move the vehicle. Pause; leave the vehicle off.

Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a simple drain-and-flush job wherever your vehicle has stopped — and no other factor settles that more than these next few minutes do.

From here on, in order, wherever you are around Meadowmill:

## Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off

In this order, and before anything else:

- Pull the keys out. Even the ignition on its own can prime your fuel system, pulling petrol out of your tank to exactly the parts it damages, and so keep it off entirely.

- Topping up with diesel seems like it dilutes the issue. It does not: nothing comes out, and that tank simply carries more of the same.

- Get the vehicle easy to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there's traffic going past anywhere near you.

- By hand, not on the engine: that's how it comes off the petrol pump. Get the forecourt staff to help you roll, whatever the miles.

- Keep your receipt. It shows which fuel was put in and about how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

On the M8, under 15 miles from Meadowmill, the next junction is the place to leave the vehicle; anywhere, the first sensible spot to stop. Do not push on to the services. Then go back to stage one.

## Meadowmill fuel drain: has the engine run yet, or not?

One answer is what everything after this stage rests on.

If it has not once been started:

- That petrol is still inside your tank and nowhere else.

- Usually it is emptied and rinsed just where your car stands.

- No place is better, and it is why the first stage matters so much.

Run at all, however briefly:

- The lines and the filter already carry petrol drawn from your tank.

- The high-pressure fuel pump as well as the injectors get it on a bigger run.

- The farther it went, the larger the job — the fuel lines, your filter, and sometimes more besides.

The line falls there since diesel protects the high-pressure pump and your injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not.

Nothing is harmed by petrol that is just sitting in a tank.

Petrol being pumped is grinding down the parts that move the vehicle.

## Meadowmill, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

Prepare a little, and the van finds you rather than circling.

- EH33 1 plus the rest of the postcode is the ideal way to start telling us where you are.

- The street or the car park. A road name helps — Bankton Junction, or wherever you have pulled up.

- Name a car park by what it serves — the one at Asda, for instance — and it is much quicker to find.

- The make and model of your vehicle, and the fact it is a diesel.

- Tell us which was put in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a separate job, with a page of its own for Meadowmill.

- How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in the filler.

- If it has run, how far plus how heavily — as well as if it's run at all.

- Hire or company car? Some contracts need the owner's authorisation for this work, and getting it before we turn up is faster than after.

Phone 0333 366 0103 next. Email works too if it can wait, with the car parked at home, going nowhere.

## Waiting for a fuel drain in Meadowmill: what to do

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the damage while you wait. So stick to these.

- Safety before the vehicle. If it has stopped somewhere exposed, get yourself clear of the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it stands, wait with it.

- Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not as a passer-by's favour: no one starts it.

- None of that gets that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from the boot. So no additives.

- Draining it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond your tank remains put anyway.

- Leave your ignition off — the windows and the radio too.

## Step by step: your fuel drain when the van gets there

- Fuel, quantity, whether it has run: those answers decide this job, and that is why we give a quote after them instead of before.

- Clearing it is how that mixture gets taken out of the tank.

- Petrol that has shifted beyond the tank travels in the fuel lines if it ran, and your lines are rinsed to shift it.

- The fuel filter is seen to. Cleared, or replaced where the vehicle has a serviceable one.

- Clean diesel in, and the system primed.

- First start on fresh diesel. Once priming is finished, your engine is started and our engineers check that it runs properly.

Our engineers remain until it is running on new diesel.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been noticed early, so the car can go straight back to normal use.

## Meadowmill, after the fuel drain: back on the road

- Drive normally. There's nothing unusual to do after it's been started on clean fuel.

- The first miles are the test. A warning lamp, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your cue to stop and ring us a second time.

- The work may come up later with a hire firm, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep your paperwork.

- The handle's colour isn't the thing to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
