# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Melin Caiach? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Melin Caiach and the rest of Caerphilly. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the motor has not yet run and the fuel is still inside your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much got in.

We shall tell you what your next stage is. Phone — it happens before anything else.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Do not crank it. Turned on anyway? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally won't run, and so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for several miles. Most people get that confused. It isn't okay — your fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it greases — that high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone also: flicking it on is commonly enough to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into precisely those components.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- A motor that has never moved is the easiest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Y Rhedyn? Hazards on, and leave it there. A difficult location suits us better than a started diesel.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts CF46 6, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.

- Three answers determine the entire job: the liquid you tipped in, the approximate volume involved, and if anything has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

How far you went is what our engineers care about, not how long the vehicle has been parked — and this is why. Diesel does two tasks on its way through an engine: it burns, and before burning it lubricates its high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a rushed fill-up on the road in, it dawning on you somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf sitting at Quakers Yard since quarter past eight tells us those few miles were driven with your pump labouring on a fuel robbed of a lot of its protection. Phone us and keep the vehicle precisely where it stands.

## Clearing petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

The work kicks off at a pump, usually. Regularly it wraps up there too.

Still at Gulf Treharris Service Station? Then that is usually where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the site.

Before your engine has fired — the forecourt is the only spot this ends up spotted.

Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the keys.

Staff will normally help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Take the help.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.

## Do our engineers cover your corner of Melin Caiach?

Melin Caiach is a small village, so our vans go out to the town and to the places around it on those same journeys: Pentwyn Berthlwyd, Treharris, Quakers Yard, Trelewis and Llancaiach.

There are separate pages for the majority of places around Caerphilly, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing about if our technicians come.

Assuming is the thing to resist, above all on the border or anywhere the satnav struggles. Phone to check.

This map shows the area this page includes.

We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and your vehicle never needs to travel to us.

Hazards on. Motor off. Phone. It's twenty to nine by the local primary school, you are late, and the till receipt shows unleaded — and even though three miles in the BMW 3 Series sounds like nothing, fuel is metered to demand, and a rushed dash demands plenty of it.

## Melin Caiach: stuck where you stopped

The chance to stop anywhere suitable does not come to everybody.

If you worked it out after setting off and landed along the verge on Cwrt Harris, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that is a common call for us instead of an unusual one.

Sit beside the vehicle if it is wise to wait inside, and clear of it if it is not.

Never start it up to get to a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into the system.

However inconvenient the spot, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that's far better for the car than carrying on.

## Driven it already? Stop, then see below

This is where the local M4 comes into it — under 10 miles from Melin Caiach.

A loss of power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Never start it to reposition. Get off at the next sensible exit then turn off.

It affects what we bring, and so mention it when you call: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Your pump is not turning, and so whatever the diesel Audi A4 did on the way to Royal Park, none of it is going on now. Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Take your time over this — but never drive the vehicle home to buy any.

## Melin Caiach itself

Melin Caiach is a locality situated on the banks of a river in Caerphilly, with a mix of rural and suburban landscapes. Melin Caiach has a relatively small population of around 1670 residents, who mostly live in detached houses. Melin Caiach is located near several other small communities, including Pentwyn Berthlwyd, Treharris, and Quakers Yard, and is about 13 miles from Cardiff. Melin Caiach sits at an elevation of approximately 160 metres above sea level.

## When our technicians reach you around Melin Caiach: what we do

- Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- The tank is emptied of everything.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.

- We pour new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.

- Once it is started, we confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

At that point it is ready to drive away.

There's no need for a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is caught quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, parked close to Treharris Library. For a diesel Mercedes E-Class whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Call us, and let the car stand with your ignition alone. Short helps, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why your lines get cleaned and not just your tank drained.

## Melin Caiach AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your motor remains off — whereas this fault under it is a distinct one altogether.

Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Melin Caiach has its own page with the detail — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

## Melin Caiach costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Honestly, no single number fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what varies it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much your tank can hold.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where the car is, and whether a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and if it has run.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

Drain it and put fresh diesel in — that's the tip you will get, normally from a person confident, and it is half true. Do exactly that to a diesel Kia Sportage near Bethania Church Treharris and it would start, which is what makes the tip sound plausible. What happens next is the problem: the engine at once pulls the petrol still waiting in the fuel filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. Our technicians flush the system and take the fuel filter off where the vehicle has a workable one, which is the difference between the car being repaired and your car only starting.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Melin Caiach motorists

## At a petrol station in Melin Caiach, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large part of this work happens there, so yes.

We visit Texaco and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that mix has been sucked through the system.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then keep it off.

It's fixable far more regularly than people assume, even though driving is what moves the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate problem. So no.

Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, as our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is.

## Still with your vehicle?

That engine remains off.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off then leave it off.

A stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than people fear.

Throughout Caerphilly and in Melin Caiach: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
