# Menston: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Menston and the remainder of West Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the motor has not yet turned over and the petrol is still in that tank, a drain is nearly always all it takes, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much got in.

One ring to us will be enough: we will show you what happens after this. Make it right away.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not crank it. And having started, never rely on it: the fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it greases — your high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone also: switching it on is frequently all it takes to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.

- Never add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it merely leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A motor that has not shifted is the quickest one to handle, and so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Main Street? Hazards on, then leave it there. An odd spot suits us better than a started engine.

- Check where you are before calling. A postcode that starts LS29 6, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.

- Three replies settle your whole job: the liquid you put in, the rough quantity involved, plus if it has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

The job starts at a pump, generally. Frequently the job ends there too.

We work on station forecourts regularly, with the site's permission, so if you're still at Esso that's generally where this drain happens.

A forecourt is the single place the mistake gets stopped before your motor has started.

The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key determine how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still put it right where your car is.

Away from the petrol pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the car. Very much worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Diesel Mercedes C-Class. A couple of litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Shut off now, at Aldi. That is the call our engineers want, since the point underneath it's about amount through your pump instead of hours on the clock.

## Will our engineers cover your corner of Menston?

As a rural village, Menston gets a steady visit, and the areas nearby come with it on the same trip: Burley Woodhead and Chevin End, Kelcliffe and Hawksworth, Tranmere Park.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and most towns in West Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Call us and enquire instead of assuming, particularly where you are on the boundary or anywhere your satnav struggles with.

Look at the map for the area covered here.

Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is territory we work on, and none of it requires your vehicle to travel to us.

Your diesel BMW 5 Series will have seemed perfectly normal on the way back from Menston Primary School. They always do, and that is the trap with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it generally will not run, so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing has happened — all while the high-pressure pump keeps working without the lubrication your fuel is supposed to be giving. Nothing tells you, because from the driver's seat there's nothing to caution you about. Call us with approximately how far you travelled and how hard you drove it; the second one counts more than the first.

## Menston: stranded wherever you parked

The opportunity to pull over anywhere suitable does not come to everyone.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Derry Hill because you worked it out after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the usual kind.

Whether you sit with the car or stand away from it turns on if being nearby looks safe.

Do not fire up the motor to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that blend further into your fuel system.

Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van heading out to an awkward spot, and that's no bother for us.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

under 10 miles from Menston, the M606 is what counts now.

A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone.

It changes what we bring, and so say so when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

The pump is not turning, so whatever your diesel Kia Sportage did on the way to Mankinghole, none of that is going on now. Nothing is getting worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but don't drive it home to buy any.

## Where's Menston?

Menston is a village in West Yorkshire, situated approximately 7 miles northwest of Bradford and 178 miles north of London. Menston sits at an elevation of 142 metres, surrounded by nearby places such as Burley Woodhead and Chevin End. Menston has a population of around 1900 residents, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type in the village. Menston is located in a rural setting, with the village of Kelcliffe also nearby.

## What our technicians do when our technicians arrive with you in Menston

- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers change what the work actually is.

- Out comes the polluted fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- Your engine is fired up and tested to make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

That has the car ready to set off.

There is no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Rarely the issue, the spot. On-street is the most common place our engineers work, and a tight parking space is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you call from close to Menston Methodist Church, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can stand next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the Volkswagen Touran gets drained, the filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the lines cleaned and fresh fuel put through the entire circuit — because by now the worst of that is in your lines, not your tank.

## Menston AdBlue removal is a separate job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas the problem beneath it's a distinct one altogether.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Menston has its own page with the details — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Menston

Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what changes it:

- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much that tank can hold.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and whether a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

If it's not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your system: our engineers flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there is a working one. Compare that with the sure of themselves tip you'll get — drain the car, refill with new diesel. Half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Citroen C4 Picasso near Menston Library and it will start, which is precisely why the tip sounds reasonable. Then your engine sucks the petrol left behind in your filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, since emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.

## Petrol in diesel: common questions around Menston

## I am on a forecourt in Menston. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this takes place.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the station's consent we attend BP and the other forecourts around town routinely.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run counts a lot more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through the fuel system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more often than drivers assume.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not a change, and so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct issue and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened.

The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Waiting next to it?

Keep it switched off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off.

This is recoverable from far more often than people expect, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
