# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Mile End?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Mile End and the remainder of Essex. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the engine has not yet run and the petrol is still inside that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

We will explain what your next stage is. Phone — it goes before anything else.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will typically refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — all right for several miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never crank it. And having started, don't depend on it: the fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.

- Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel has two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it protects the high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is usually all it takes to prime your system, which moves this petrol out of your tank and into just those components.

- Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so never put diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not moved is the quickest one to deal with, and our team would rather get to a difficult place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Mill Road, turn those hazards on then keep it there.

- The van showing up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts CO4 5, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Get both ready before you phone.

- What was put in, approximately how much, and whether your car has started — the three replies settle the full visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Don't run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through your high-pressure pump in real volume on the drive in, and the way back would roughly double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is okay. There is no need to stand over your Peugeot 308 at Colchester while the work gets done, and our team would much rather speak to you tonight than find out on Monday.

## Can petrol be drained from your diesel on the forecourt?

Forecourts are where this work usually begins, and where a large part of that ends.

If you're still on the forecourt at Esso, that is generally where the drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's permission.

At the forecourt, it gets spotted with your engine never started, and no place else manages that.

We can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for your key are what determine that.

Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you roll the vehicle. Very much worth doing.

Starting it just for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Nissan Qashqai, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off outside East of England CO-OP now. Time passed is not the thing our technicians need. Fuel pulled by the pump is.

## Areas our team serve around Mile End

Mile End is a residential suburb, and our technicians get out to the town and to the places near it on the usual trips: Braiswick, Horkesley Heath, Great Horkesley, Colchester and Parsons Heath.

Our engineers still come. The places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations across Essex, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Near the boundary, or somewhere your satnav gets wrong? Call us to ask instead of presuming.

This map shows the ground the page includes.

The vehicle doesn't need to move to us. We work across all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stranded at the kerbside around Mile End

Not everyone finds a safe spot to pull in.

If you noticed after setting off and finished up on the verge on Northern Approach Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a common call for us and not a rare one.

Safe where you are? Remain by it. Not safe? Move out and clear of it.

Never restart it to get to a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mixture deeper into the fuel system.

We will send our van to a tricky place without any trouble, and for the car that is a lot better than pressing on.

## Run it already? Pull over, then check this

The M11 is the one that counts now, and it runs under 50 miles from Mile End.

It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Come off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and do not restart the vehicle to reposition.

It alters what our engineers bring, so mention it when you call: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 3 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the vehicle stands, because a diesel Mercedes C-Class parked outside Mile End Recreation Ground is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

## A little about Mile End

Mile End is a suburban area located near Colchester in Essex, sitting at an elevation of 51 metres in the inland landscape of eastern England. Mile End is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock and is situated close to nearby places such as Braiswick, Horkesley Heath, and Great Horkesley. Mile End is home to a population of approximately 4426 residents and is within a short distance of Colchester, the nearest city.

## What follows when we arrive with you around Mile End

- Our technicians check what was put in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The responses change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.

- Out goes the contaminated fuel.

- Our technicians flush the fuel lines and clean your filter, so what's left in the fuel system is not what caused the issue.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- It is fired up with new diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running properly.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away.

Our technicians do everything wherever the car has ended up, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been spotted early, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and left your diesel BMW 5 Series up near Catholic Church of Saint Joseph a couple of hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us then leave it off. The short hop truly helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so weakened fuel has reached the filter and your pump — which is why our engineers purge your lines instead of only emptying the tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Mile End is a distinct matter

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is the same — never fire it up — but the issue is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal in Mile End has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. Our engineers cover both.

Clattering? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That is your misfuelled Vauxhall Astra, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly close to Myland Saint Michael's, and leave the restarting alone.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Mile End

What changes the price is set out below, as the job is not one job and our technicians can't honestly put a single figure on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

## Mile End motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I'm on a forecourt around Mile End. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes, and it is where a big portion of this work takes place.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there's possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable far more frequently than drivers assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back.

Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to put up with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Never switch your engine on again.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and parked, a car is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Essex and in Mile End: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
