# Mile House: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the motor yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still sitting in the tank and your engine has not yet turned over, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has ended up in Mile House or the rest of East Riding of Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Our engineers will explain what the next step is. Phone — that goes before anything else.

## What to try next about petrol in a diesel

- While you drive, your pump and your injectors wear. That is why you do not crank it, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point most people get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Leave the ignition be too. Diesel performs two roles: it combusts, and before it burns it lubricates your high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, which pulls this petrol out of the tank and into precisely those components.

- Never thin it. Diesel poured on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to sort out, and our team would sooner get to a tricky place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Henley Drive, put your hazards on then leave the car there.

- Have your whereabouts ready before you phone. A postcode that starts HU9 3 and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van arriving and the van circling.

- Three facts determine the full visit: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate quantity involved, and whether it has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Ring us before you move it. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Passat this morning, and the car outside Hull ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is inert, and any wear happened on the trip in, when your pump was pulling diesel that petrol had weakened.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the job mostly kicks off, and where a large share of that closes.

If you are still on the forecourt at BP, that is generally where the drain takes place — we work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement.

The forecourt is the one spot this can be caught before the motor has fired.

The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the keys determine how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where the vehicle stands.

The staff will normally help you wheel the vehicle clear of the pump so the next driver can get past. That is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.

## Can we cover your corner of Mile House?

Mile House is a residential suburb, so our technicians are out to it and to anywhere near it on the usual trips: Summergangs, Sutton Ings, Wilmington, Stoneferry and Drypool.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations around East Riding of Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours.

Ring us and ask instead of presuming, particularly where you're on the boundary or anywhere the satnav can't find.

The map is the patch this page covers.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory we cover, and none of that requires your car to come to us.

Your diesel Skoda Octavia will have felt completely usual on the way back from Southcoates Primary Academy. They do, and that is the trap with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it usually won't run, so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, idles and drives off as though nothing has happened — all the while your high-pressure pump does its work without the protection your fuel is supposed to be supplying. Nothing tells you, since from behind the wheel there's nothing to warn you about. Call us with roughly how far you went and how hard you worked it; the second one matters more than the first.

## Roadside call-outs around Mile House

Not everybody gets a suitable spot to stop.

A normal call for us instead of an unusual one: worked out after setting off, ended up along the verge beside Stephenson Street or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Clear of the car when it's not sensible to wait inside, with it when it is.

Never restart the motor to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into your fuel system.

A van coming to an awkward spot is no bother for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Don't chance it. The drive home from Ravenser is perfectly possible, which is precisely the problem — a diluted tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears down the components the fuel is supposed to lubricate. Phone us, and let the Audi A4 stay where it stands.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has moved

The M180 is the one which matters now, and runs under 15 miles from Mile House.

Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the next junction that is sensible, pull up there, and never start the car to move it.

Long trip? Anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in our van.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built leaks past tolerances instead, leaving the motor a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting components it passes through — that is the full process. It explains the ordinary East Park call too: a diesel Mercedes C-Class that travelled out without a murmur and came back down on power, rough at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is your engine failing, and that is the part worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

## A bit about Mile House

Mile House is a suburban area located near the city of Kingston upon Hull, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, and sits close to the Humber Estuary at a low elevation of around 3 metres. Mile House is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing stock and is situated near other local areas such as Summergangs and Sutton Ings. Mile House is part of the larger urban landscape surrounding Kingston upon Hull, with the city centre just over a mile away.

## What our technicians do when we arrive with you around Mile House

- Our technicians find out what was put in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.

- The contaminated fuel comes out of the tank.

- What is remaining in the system should not be what caused the trouble, so your fuel lines get cleaned and the fuel filter cleaned.

- Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.

- After it is fired up, we confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away.

There is no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's noticed soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Mile House is a different problem

The fault isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — don't start it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue in its place.

AdBlue removal around Mile House has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you ring us — some agreements want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later on. Then phone us about the Peugeot 3008 by St Columba, and don't worry that you can't say how full that tank was. Almost nobody can, in a vehicle they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out there. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mix, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

## Mile House costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the price is laid out below, as this job is not one job and our technicians can't truthfully put a single price on this page.

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.

- Where your vehicle is, and if our van can safely reach and work on it.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

## Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Mile House

## I am on a forecourt around Mile House. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this takes place.

Routinely, provided the site consents: Morrisons, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something our engineers answer there and then.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more regularly than motorists assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different issue and it does not restore what petrol has diluted.

The pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, since our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

## Still with the car?

Turned off is how it remains.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and parked, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Emptying misfilled cars, Mile House and the rest of East Riding of Yorkshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
