# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Milton? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Milton and the rest of Cambridgeshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When the motor has not turned over and the fuel is still inside the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much was put in.

Call us and then our engineers can show you what comes after that before you try anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for a few miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not fire it up. And once started, don't believe it: the fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. That is why the ignition is left off as well — switch it on and you commonly prime your system, and that is petrol leaving your tank for exactly those components.

- Never water down it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- A car that has not shifted is the quickest one to sort, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on High Street? Hazards on, then keep it there. An awkward spot works for us better than a started motor.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts CB24 6, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.

- What got in, approximately how much, and also whether your car has fired — those three facts determine the entire call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

How far you travelled is what our engineers ask about, not how long the vehicle has been parked — and here is why. Diesel performs two tasks on its way through a motor: it combusts, and before burning it greases that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a quick fill on the road in, the realisation coming close to eleven, and a diesel Renault Megane parked at Cambridge North since quarter past eight shows those few miles were covered with the pump labouring on a liquid robbed of much of its protection. Ring us then keep the vehicle right where it sits.

## At the forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Plenty of the work starts at the pump, meaning a big share of it gets completed at one.

Still at Tesco? Then that is typically where it happens. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the site.

At a garage, it is halted with your motor never run, and nowhere else does it.

The few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where the car sits.

Clear of the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you roll the vehicle. Well worth it.

Shifting it four spaces does not warrant firing the motor.

If you have put petrol in the diesel Volkswagen Passat around Milton and you're now stranded at Tesco with a boot loaded with shopping, ring us. Do not fire it up again to exit the space. Our technicians will get to you, drain the tank, clean the fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can drive away. A mile or so at light throttle uses hardly any of it, so such jobs are often the straightforward ones.

## Service around Milton

Being a rural village, Milton gets a frequent visit, and the areas nearby go with it on that same journey: Horningsea and Landbeach, Fen Ditton and Kings Hedges, Chesterton.

Our technicians still come. Those places above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of places around Cambridgeshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Close to the border, or somewhere the satnav gets wrong? Phone and enquire instead of guessing.

The patch this page covers is on the map.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory we work on, and none of that requires the car to come to us.

## Kerbside breakdowns across Milton

Some drivers get no safe spot to stop at all.

A common call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, ended up by the verge on Wilson Way or in a lay-by with your hazards on.

Fine there? Stay with it. Not okay? Climb out and away from it.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the problem: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere handier and the blend goes further into the system with every mile travelled.

We'll take our van to a tricky place without any fuss, and for the vehicle that's far better than pressing on.

Chance the drive home from The White Horse? Not a chance. It will start and it will move off just fine, which is the problem — a diesel on a thinned tank runs normally while grinding the components your fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Peugeot 308 and phone.

## Run it already? Pull over, then check this

The M11 is the road that matters now, and runs under 5 miles from Milton.

It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Don't start it to reposition. Get off at the next safe exit and turn off.

On a longer trip — anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and mention it when you call. It changes what our technicians bring.

## Where is Milton?

Milton is a village in Cambridgeshire, situated near the city of Cambridge and surrounded by other small settlements like Horningsea and Landbeach. Milton sits in a low-lying area, with an elevation of around 9 metres, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Milton is located approximately 3 miles from Cambridge and 52 miles from London, making it a commuter-friendly location. Milton remains a relatively small community with a population of around 2872 residents.

## When our technicians arrive with you in Milton: what follows

- Our technicians find out what was put in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.

- Away comes the contaminated mixture.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.

- Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.

- Your engine is turned on and checked to be sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been caught early, and as all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Milton is a distinct problem

The problem is not the same, though the first instruction is — never crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which thins the diesel.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and deposits in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Milton page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

New spots are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical not slapdash: the slimmer petrol nozzle fits a current diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Filled up close to Milton Village Sign without thinking, in a diesel Ford Kuga you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anybody realises, and miles is what settles how much petrol gets to the injectors.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Milton?

Our technicians cannot put one number on this page frankly, because the job isn't one job. What changes it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much your tank can hold.

- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.

- Where the car is, and if our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

The filter, the lines, the pump and the rail: that is where that mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So that tank isn't where most of the damage rests by this point, and a diesel BMW X1 that made it by Mother and Child needs the system purged instead of emptied.

## Milton drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Milton petrol station forecourt

A big part of this work gets done there, so yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there's possible.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

What settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through the system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It's recoverable a lot more frequently than motorists fear, even though driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Standing next to it?

Turned off is how the car stays.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off.

A parked, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than motorists expect.

Across Cambridgeshire and in Milton: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
