# Moor Edge: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Moor Edge and the rest of West Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the engine has not yet run and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

One call to us will be enough: our engineers can tell you what happens next. Try that straight away.

## Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- As you drive, your pump and your injectors suffer. This is why you never start the vehicle, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part most people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally can't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the car's ignition stays off too — flick it on and you frequently prime your system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for just those components.

- Never tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it simply gives you a larger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Wait where you are if you safely can. A car that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and we would sooner drive to a tricky place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Anthony Lane, put those hazards on then keep the car there.

- Keep your whereabouts prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning BD16 1 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van turning up and our van circling.

- What went in, about how many litres, and also if your car has fired — these three answers shape the whole call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is inert, so a diesel Renault Megane left outside Bingley this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what sucked thinned diesel through the pump was the run in. Phone us before you head off to fetch the vehicle.

## Can petrol be pumped from a diesel at a forecourt?

Forecourts are where the job usually kicks off, and where a good chunk of it ends.

The drain normally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the site's permission, that's somewhere we work, and regularly.

At the forecourt, this is spotted with your engine never fired, and nowhere else does that.

The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys determine how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still put it right where your car sits.

Roll the car out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Rolling the car four bays does not justify starting the engine.

## Will our engineers serve your corner of Moor Edge?

Harden, Ryecroft, Hainworth Shaw, Cradle Edge, Wilsden Hill — every one of them on the runs that take us across to Moor Edge too, a small village.

We still come. Those places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all towns around West Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Near a boundary, or somewhere the satnav gets wrong? Ring us and check rather than assuming.

The map shows the area this page includes.

Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of it is territory our engineers cover, and none of that asks the car to travel to us.

## Stranded at the roadside anywhere around Moor Edge?

Some people have no safe place to pull over whatsoever.

Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Gatesway because you realised after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the usual kind.

Whether you stay beside the motor or keep away from it rests on whether sitting there seems sensible.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

We will bring our van to an awkward place without any fuss, and for the car that is far better than driving on.

Park it overnight. Phone us in the morning. Nothing about a diesel Nissan Qashqai sitting in the parking area by The Golden Fleece degrades as it stands, tank of petrol or not, and this job stays a simple one right up until the moment it gets taken home. The question our technicians come with is about the trip there: a cold motor over a short hop is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the piston rings into the oil.

## Run it already? Stop, then check this

under 10 miles from Moor Edge, the M606 is what matters now.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Come off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and don't start it to reposition.

Long trip? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in our van.

Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while your car stands, since a diesel Ford Focus left at Harden Cricket Club is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

## About Moor Edge

Moor Edge is a locality situated on the riverside in West Yorkshire, with an elevation of 158 metres and a mix of terraced housing. Moor Edge lies approximately 6 miles from Bradford and is near several other local places, including Harden and Ryecroft. Moor Edge is part of a larger urban area, but retains a distinct character. Moor Edge has a population of around 1271 people.

## What we do when we arrive with you around Moor Edge

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies shape what the work really is.

- We empty your tank of the contaminated mixture.

- What is remaining in the system should not be what caused the issue, and so the lines get rinsed and your filter cleared.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- Once it's started, we confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

That leaves it ready to set off.

All of this is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Why we're blunt about not driving on: your pump sits upstream of the injectors, and so whatever a wearing pump gives off travels onward with your fuel. Leave the Mercedes C-Class by Harden War Memorial and phone us.

## Moor Edge AdBlue removal is a different problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas the issue beneath it's a distinct one altogether.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Moor Edge page. Both are ours to deal with.

Rattling? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That is your misfilled Dacia Duster, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe near St Saviour, and leave the restarting alone.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Moor Edge

One number would not be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can safely get to the car and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Moor Edge

## Fuel drains on a Moor Edge petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Routinely, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something we answer straight away.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the engine has run matters a lot more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres.

What decides how much work is required is if that blend has been drawn through the fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Driving takes the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you is not restarting it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

## Standing next to it?

Turned off is the way it stays.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the vehicle remain that way.

This is recoverable from much more frequently than people expect, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.

Throughout West Yorkshire and in Moor Edge: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
