# Moorfields: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, don't switch your motor on, even briefly, to move the vehicle. Stop; leave it off.

Petrol in a diesel that has not been run is generally a drain plus a flush, done where your vehicle stands, and what happens in the coming few minutes decides that far more than anything else.

Below is the order from here, anywhere in Moorfields you are.

## Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

Do the following first, in this order.

- Ignition off, keys out. Turned on, your ignition can prime the system — and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank towards the components it harms.

- Topping up with diesel seems like it dilutes the problem. It does not: nothing comes out, and your tank just holds more of the same.

- Being seen comes first beside moving traffic: put the hazard lights on, and only then think about everything else.

- Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, get the staff to help you roll the car away from the petrol pump. Do not crank it to shift it, however short the distance.

- Hold on to the receipt. It says which fuel got in plus about how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M50 at the next exit if that is where you are, under 15 miles from Moorfields, and pull over somewhere safe and not pressing on to the services. Then start at step one.

## Every Moorfields fuel drain starts here: has your engine run?

From this point on, everything hinges on a single answer.

Not run, not even once:

- Nowhere but that tank: that's where the petrol still is.

- Where the vehicle sits is usually where the work happens: a drain, then a flush.

- This, here, is the best place to be in, and the whole reason step one counts.

Run at all, even for a second:

- Petrol has been drawn from the tank, past the fuel filter then into your lines.

- A bigger run carries it right through to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

- The job grows with the distance — lines rinsed, filter seen to, sometimes more.

Petrol doesn't lubricate. Diesel does, oiling your pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line falls where it does.

Nothing is harmed by petrol that's only waiting in a tank.

Move that petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts doing the moving.

## Moorfields, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

Whether the van circles or finds you depends on a little planning.

- HR4 9 and the remainder of the postcode makes the ideal way to start telling us where you are.

- A road name is a help: Moorfield Street, say, or whichever street you've stopped in. A car park works too.

- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside Waitrose, for example — and it's far quicker to find.

- The make and model of your vehicle, and the fact it is a diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own Moorfields page.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from the receipt — either gives us how much.

- If it's run, how far plus how heavily — and whether it's run at all.

- The owner may have to authorise this work under some hire and company agreements — so it is quicker to settle whose motor it is before our engineers arrive.

Call 0333 366 0103 once you've got that together — or, if your car is at home, going nowhere, use .

## Moorfields fuel drain on its way? While you wait

Stick to these: kindly meant help does the harm during the wait.

- Where the vehicle has stopped decides where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety before the car.

- Nobody — however kind — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to shift the vehicle a short way.

- Something from your boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts that petrol.

- Draining it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond your tank stays where it is all the same.

- Even the radio or your windows aren't worth switching your ignition on for.

## Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one step at a time

- First, three questions: which fuel was put in, the quantity, and has it run? Those replies decide the job, so our quote follows them.

- Out of the tank comes the tainted mixture: your tank is emptied.

- If it ran, your lines are holding petrol that has moved beyond your tank — so they're rinsed.

- Where the vehicle has a workable filter, it is changed; otherwise, cleared.

- Clean diesel in, and the fuel system primed.

- Starting the car. When your system is bled with fresh diesel, our engineers start the engine and check it runs correctly.

Till it runs on new diesel, we stay with it.

The car returns to normal use at once, and lasting damage is very rare when it has been spotted soon.

## Moorfields, after your fuel drain: back on the road

- Started on fresh diesel, it needs nothing special of you. Just drive normally.

- Pull over and ring us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that is lumpy, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- Keep the paperwork. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.

- Next time, read the pump. The label, not the colour of its handle.
