# Morriston: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never start the engine. While the petrol is still in that tank and your engine has not been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that's settled in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Morriston and the rest of Swansea, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

Call us so our technicians will tell you what happens after that before you attempt any more.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine enough for a few miles. People have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And once started, don't believe it: the fuel system is wearing down while you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition is left off as well — flick it on and you usually prime your system, and that is petrol leaving your tank for just those parts.

- Don't put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies, and topping up removes nothing — it just hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Cwmbath Road, anywhere — a tricky spot for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a motor that never moved.

- Get your whereabouts ready before you call. A postcode that starts SA6 8 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between our van arriving and our van circling.

- Three facts decide your whole job: the fuel you poured in, the approximate volume of it, plus whether it has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

It begins at a forecourt, usually. Frequently the job wraps up there too.

If you are still on the forecourt at Asda, that's usually where this drain happens — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's permission.

At a garage, the mistake gets stopped with the engine never run, and nowhere else does it.

Fuel sucked out of that tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the engine is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and the fuel lines along with the tank. That is still not a calamity, and our engineers sort it out where the vehicle sits. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Staff will generally help out pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get by. Take the help.

Cranking the car just to shift four car lengths isn't.

Every start primes the fuel system and sucks more of that mixture out of your tank and toward your pump — which is why a vehicle moved twice into a nicer space has gradually turned into a worse job than one left precisely where it stopped. So where we cannot work beside your diesel Nissan Qashqai, we move the vehicle without starting it. None of that is pedantry about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Spar we attend often, and your fuel is seldom the awkward part: that bay is. Cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height barrier at the entrance settling whether our van can reach you at all. Tell us how hemmed in you are, and which way the car faces.

## Morriston and the areas near it

Morriston is a residential suburb, so our vans get out to the town and to the places around it on the usual rounds: Tircanol, Graig Trewyddfa, Cwm-felin-fach, Clase and Cwmrhydyceirw.

We still come. The names above are only the closest neighbours, and a page exists for most places around Swansea, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Assuming is the mistake to resist, above all on a border or somewhere the satnav fails. Phone and ask.

Look at our map for the patch included on this page.

All of that is ground our technicians serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not drive the vehicle anywhere.

## Roadside stops across Morriston

A chance to pull over somewhere safe doesn't come to everybody.

If you noticed after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Glantawe Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that's a routine call for us instead of an unusual one.

Whether you stay beside the motor or keep away from it rests on whether sitting in it looks wise.

Never start up the engine to nurse it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into your fuel system.

We'll take the van to an awkward place without any bother, and for the car that's far better than carrying on.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has travelled

This is where your M4 comes into it — under a mile from Morriston.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

It changes what our technicians bring, and so tell us when you phone: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

None of that is the motor failing. That's the part worth hearing, and it's why the usual Morriston Park call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Dacia Duster drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, the idle uneven and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision components it passes through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure rather than only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built bleeds past tolerances, delivery arrives weaker and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once your fuel is sorted.

## A little about Morriston

Morriston is a suburban area in Swansea, situated near the River Tawe at an elevation of 29 metres. Morriston lies approximately 3.2 miles from Swansea city centre and is surrounded by nearby places such as Tircanol and Graig Trewyddfa. Morriston has a population of around 5989 people and is characterised by predominantly terraced housing. Morriston is located in a region with strong industrial heritage, close to the Welsh coastline.

## What comes next when our technicians reach you around Morriston

- Our engineers find out what was put in, how much, and if the engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.

- That tank is emptied of it.

- What is left in the fuel system should not be what caused the issue, so your fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.

- New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- The motor is turned on and tested to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

That has the car ready to set off.

All of this is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

Rarely the trouble, the spot. On-street is the most common location our technicians work, and a cramped parking spot is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you call from close to Bethania Chapel, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the BMW 5 Series gets drained, the fuel filter changed where a usable one exists, your lines cleaned and fresh fuel put through the full system — since by now the worst of that is in the lines, not your tank.

## Morriston AdBlue removal is a separate matter

The issue is not the same, though the first rule is — never fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Morriston page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you ring us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it later. Then call us about the Vauxhall Astra near St. Davids Church, Morriston, and do not worry that you can't say how full the tank was. Nearly no one can, in a motor they collected two days ago, and we work it out on site. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mixture, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Morriston

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page frankly, since this job is not one job. What shifts it:

- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.

- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for a technician.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Your filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail: that's where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So your tank isn't where most of the trouble rests by this point, and a diesel Ford Kuga that made it by Morriston Library needs the system purged rather than drained.

## Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Morriston

## Fuel drains on a Morriston petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there. With the site's permission our technicians visit BP and the other forecourts locally routinely.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the engine has run counts much more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres.

What determines how much work is required is whether that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

It's recoverable a lot more commonly than drivers fear, even though driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different issue and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened.

The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to cope with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with your car?

Shut off is how it stays.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off and leave it off.

Cold and still, a car is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Call-out fuel draining around Morriston and throughout Swansea — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
