# Mosstodloch: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still in your tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in Mosstodloch or the rest of Moray, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Ring us and we shall explain what happens after that before you attempt anything else.

## The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Do not crank it. Fired up all the same? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off fine, for a couple of miles. Most people get that reversed. It isn't okay — your fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it protects — that high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition alone also: turning it on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into exactly those components.

- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Garmouth Road, anywhere — a tricky spot for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a vehicle that never moved.

- Know where you are before calling. A postcode that starts IV32 7, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.

- Three answers shape the whole call-out: the liquid you put in, the ballpark quantity of it, and whether anything has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, left outside Elgin since this morning? The afternoon has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is dormant. It was the trip in that drew weakened diesel through your pump. Phone before you move it.

## Can petrol be taken out of a diesel at the forecourt?

Forecourts are where this job mostly kicks off, and where a good share of that finishes.

If you are still at the forecourt at JET, that is usually where the drain happens — we work on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement.

Before the engine has run — a garage is the single place the mistake ends up stopped.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still put it right where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the key.

Away from the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Very much worth it.

Starting it to move four vehicle lengths isn't.

Petrol in the Renault Megane, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you outside Scotmid, somewhere around Mosstodloch? Then phone us, and leave the motor out of it — not even to exit the space. A technician comes to you. Tank emptied, fuel lines rinsed, clean diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile draws little, so these are often the easy cases.

## Mosstodloch plus the villages beside it

Crofts of Dipple, Dipple, Trochelhill, Blackdam, Fochabers — all of these on the rounds that take us out to Mosstodloch as well, a rural village.

If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we don't come — there are pages for most places across Moray, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Call us to ask instead of guessing — boundaries especially, and wherever a satnav can misread.

See the map for the area covered on this page.

Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is territory our technicians work on, and none of that needs your car to come to us.

A passer-by will urge you to move it out of the gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. A misfilled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags at the local primary school is a nuisance; the same car restarted three more times to be helpful is a fuel system instead of a tank. Each restart primes the lines and draws more petrol through your filter then into your pump. Stay put, let them moan, and call us.

## Roadside breakdowns around Mosstodloch

Not everybody finds a sensible spot to pull over.

A common call for us instead of an unusual one: worked out after setting off, finished up on the verge of Pinewood Road or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Out of the car if it is not sensible to sit inside, with it when it is.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere better and the mix goes further into the system with every mile covered.

However inconvenient the spot, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is far better for your car than carrying on.

Park it there overnight. Call us in the morning. Nothing about a diesel Peugeot 308 sitting in the parking area outside the pub in the village degrades while it sits, tank of petrol or not, and the job stays a simple one right up till the moment it gets taken home. The query we bring is about the drive there: a cold engine over a short run is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the rings into the oil.

## Run it already? Stop, then see below

over 50 miles from Mosstodloch, the local M90 is what counts now.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power drains away, your idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone.

On a longer run — anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors, and say so when you ring. It affects what our engineers bring.

None of it is your engine failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it is why the ordinary Balnacoul Wood call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Mercedes E-Class drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, your idle lumpy and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision parts it runs through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built bleeds past clearances, delivery shows up weaker and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once your fuel is sorted.

## Mosstodloch itself

Mosstodloch is a village in Moray, situated inland at an elevation of 36 metres, with a mix of detached housing and other residential properties. Mosstodloch lies near the villages of Crofts of Dipple, Dipple, and Trochelhill, and is approximately 42 miles from the city of Inverness. Mosstodloch has a population of around 801 people, and is characterized by its rural setting. Mosstodloch is located in the north of Scotland, around 439 miles from London.

## What comes next when our engineers arrive with you in Mosstodloch

- Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- Away flows the contaminated fuel.

- What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what created the problem, so your fuel lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.

- Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.

- It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and we check that it is running properly.

That has your car ready to drive away.

Lasting damage is very rare when it has been caught quickly, and because all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Mosstodloch?

The fault is not the same, though the first instruction is — never fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Mosstodloch has its own page with the full story — including why it is usually the more serious of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Mosstodloch?

Our engineers can't put one number on this page honestly, since the job is not one job. What moves it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

## Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Mosstodloch

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Mosstodloch?

Yes, and it's where a large portion of this work takes place.

Our engineers work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave it off.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more often than people fear.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It's not a change, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back.

The pump still has to live with it, since the tank still has petrol in it later.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

## Still with your vehicle?

Do not turn it back on.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off.

A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers fear.

Emptying wrongly fuelled motors, Mosstodloch and the rest of Moray, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
