# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Mount? Don't Start It

With the tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet started, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Across Mount and the rest of West Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

Call us before everything else starts, and you will hear what comes from there.

## The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- While you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors suffer. That's why you never fire it up, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point most people get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally cannot run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition remains off as well — turn it on and you frequently prime that system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for precisely those parts.

- Don't dilute it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A car that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort, and our team would rather travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Roman Avenue, put your hazards on and keep the vehicle there.

- Before you ring, work out your position. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts HD3 3 — that's what decides whether our van turns up or circles.

- What was put in, about how many litres, and also whether the car has fired — the three facts decide the whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Quarter past eight, a hurried refuel on the trip in, and you realise close to eleven — by which time your diesel Renault Megane has been sitting at Slaithwaite for three hours. Phone us then leave it right where it stands. The drive in is the part that is key now, as diesel performs two jobs on its way through an engine: it burns, and before it burns it protects its high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were done with your pump working on a liquid that had shed most of the protection it is made for — which is why the thing our technicians ask is how far you travelled, not how long your car has been sitting.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A big share of this work ends up done at a forecourt, since that's where it mostly begins.

The drain generally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the station's consent, that's somewhere we work, and often.

At a forecourt, the mistake is spotted with the motor never fired, and no place else does that.

Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and the lines as well as the tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and we sort it out where the vehicle sits. What decides it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Roll it out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Rolling the car four bays doesn't warrant cranking the motor.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Skoda Octavia, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off outside Sainsbury's now. Time gone by is not the thing our engineers need. Fuel drawn by your pump is.

## Service around Mount

Being a residential suburb, Mount sees a steady visit, while the villages nearby go along on that same journey: Upper Hirst and Lower Hirst, Snow Lea and Salendine Nook, Longwood Edge.

If yours isn't on this list that does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for most locations across West Yorkshire, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours.

Contact us and check rather than presuming — boundaries above all, and wherever a satnav may misread.

Check our map for the area covered on this page.

Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of it is territory our technicians serve, and none of that needs the car to travel to us.

Hazards on. Ignition off. Ring us. It's twenty to nine outside Moorlands Primary School, you're late, and the receipt shows unleaded — and although three miles in your BMW 3 Series seems like nothing, fuel is delivered to demand, and a hurried drive needs plenty of that.

## Stopped by the roadside anywhere around Mount?

Not everybody finds a safe place to pull over.

If you noticed after setting off and landed along the verge of Roman Close, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that's a routine call for us instead of an unusual one.

Stay beside your car while it's wise to wait in it, and clear of the car if it is not.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled.

However tricky the location, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that's much better for your car than pressing on.

## Driven it already? Pull in, then check below

Here is where the local M62 comes into it — under a mile from Mount.

A loss of power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

On a longer trip — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you ring. It changes what we bring.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not only burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built leaks past tolerances instead, leaving the engine a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built around. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it passes through — that is the whole process. It explains the ordinary Hirst Wood call too: a diesel Vauxhall Astra that drove out without fuss and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that is the part worth hearing. The fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

## A bit about Mount

Mount is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated near the riverside and surrounded by nearby places such as Upper Hirst, Lower Hirst, and Snow Lea. Mount sits at an elevation of 274 metres, approximately 9.9 miles from Bradford, and is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing. Mount is part of the larger urban landscape of West Yorkshire, with the city of Bradford being a significant nearby urban centre.

## The call-out in Mount, step by step

- Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- The polluted fuel is pulled out of your tank.

- Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left afterwards is not the thing that caused the trouble.

- Our engineers pour fresh diesel in and prime the system.

- It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and we make sure that it's running properly.

After that it's ready to set off.

All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Mount is a distinct problem

Don't start it: that first rule holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself.

Petrol weakens the diesel and removes the lubrication the system relies on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and deposits in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Mount page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Mount

Truthfully, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here's what varies it:

- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much that tank can hold.

- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.

Someone certain will tell you to drain the vehicle then put fresh diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Volkswagen Polo close to St Mary Magdalene's Church and your engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here's the trouble: there's petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is suck it back through your pump again. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Phone us. The circuit gets purged, the fuel filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed motor from one that merely starts.

## Mount motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station in Mount, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large part of this work happens there, so yes.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Scientific Lubricants is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there's possible.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run counts far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more frequently than drivers expect.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, draining and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct issue and it doesn't put back what petrol has thinned.

Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Never turn the car on again.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
