# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Netley? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, across Netley and the rest of Hampshire. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. While the motor has not turned over and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much went in.

We can tell you what the following step will be. Ring us — this happens before all else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- As you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear. This is why you never crank it, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit most people get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Flicking the ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition alone.

- Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies — so do not put diesel on top to thin it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has never moved is the easiest one to deal with, and we'd much rather get to an awkward place than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on New Road, put your hazards on and leave the vehicle there.

- Keep your whereabouts prepared before you phone. A postcode that starts SO31 5 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van arriving and a van circling.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the motor has started. Those three details settle the full call-out.

## At the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

It starts at a forecourt, generally. Regularly the work wraps up there as well.

We work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's consent, so if you're still at BP that is usually where the drain happens.

Nowhere but the forecourt can the mistake be halted with the motor still cold.

The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the key determine how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where the vehicle sits.

Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get by. Accept the assistance.

Firing the car for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

## Netley and the areas beside it

Those same journeys get us to Butlocks Heath, Hound, Weston, Old Netley and Hamble-le-Rice as well as Netley, which is a coastal village.

We still come. Those names above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations across Hampshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Ring us to check rather than presuming, particularly if you are on the boundary or somewhere your phone gets wrong.

The map marks the ground the page spans.

The car doesn't need to come to us. Our technicians work across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Every restart primes the lines and pulls more petrol through the filter then into your pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel Vauxhall Astra on the zig-zags by Netley Abbey Junior School is an inconvenience, whereas the same car restarted three more times to be helpful is a fuel system instead of a tank. A passer-by will urge you to shift it out of the gateway and fix it later. Do not. Leave it, let people moan, and give us a call.

## Netley: stuck where you stopped

Some drivers have no suitable place to stop at all.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Victoria Road as you worked it out after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the usual kind.

Whether you stay beside the vehicle or move away from it depends on if sitting nearby looks wise.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the problem: restart the car to reach somewhere handier and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled.

Driving on does the car far more harm than a technician coming out to a tricky spot, and that's no bother for us.

Your Audi A6 remains where it is in the car park at Prince Consort for the whole job, which generally runs like this. First we ask what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since, given that much of the work depends on those answers. The tank is emptied of the polluted blend, your lines are rinsed, and the filter comes off if it is a replaceable one. With fresh diesel in and your system bled, the car is started and checked, and once it is running smoothly you drive away.

## Run it already? Pull in, and read this

under 3 miles out of Netley, the local M27 is what matters now.

Lost power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first junction that's sensible, stop there, and never restart the car to reposition.

It alters what our technicians bring, and so say so when you ring: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

## A bit about Netley

Netley is a coastal village in Hampshire, situated near the city of Southampton and overlooking Southampton Water. Netley sits at a low elevation of around 9 metres, with its semi-detached housing stock reflecting the area's development as a residential community. Netley is close to other nearby places such as Butlocks Heath, Hound, and Weston, and is within commuting distance of London, approximately 69 miles away.

## What our technicians do when we get to you around Netley

- Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- Your tank is emptied of everything.

- Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later is not the thing that created the issue.

- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- Your engine is turned on and checked to confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

That leaves it ready to set off.

All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Three things help when you ring from near Netley Library: which side the filler is on, whether our van can park beside without blocking the road, and whether your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest location our engineers work, and so the place itself is hardly ever the problem — we would far rather deal with a cramped parking space than with a vehicle that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain your Skoda Superb, change the filter where there's a usable one, flush the lines and put fresh fuel through the entire system, as by this point the worst of that is waiting in the fuel lines rather than in the tank.

## A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Netley

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first rule is unchanged — never start it — but this problem isn't.

Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal in Netley has its own page with the detail — including why it is frequently the more significant of the two.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, a ragged idle, clattering: that is a wrongly fuelled diesel Ford Mondeo telling you what is wrong. Never restart it to find a better spot — turn off where you have stopped, near Church of the Annunciation or anywhere else.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Netley

One price would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and whether a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range.

If it isn't time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

The filter, your lines, the pump and the rail: that's where the mix is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So that tank is not where most of the trouble rests by this point, and a diesel Mercedes B-Class that got near Saint Edward The Confessor Church, Hound needs your system purged instead of cleared.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Netley drivers

## I'm on a forecourt around Netley. Can you drain the car on the spot?

A large portion of this work takes place there, so yes.

Regularly, provided the site agrees: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something we answer straight away.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

It's fixable a lot more often than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to live with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with the car?

Keep the engine shut off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off.

A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than motorists assume.
