# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in New Arley?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout New Arley and the remainder of Warwickshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still inside the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in.

Our team can explain what the following stage is. Phone — it comes ahead of all else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

- As you drive, your pump and the injectors wear down. That is why you do not start it, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it greases — your injection pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: flicking it on is frequently enough to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into just those components.

- Do not water down it. Diesel put on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and we would rather drive to an odd place than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Sycamore Crescent, turn the hazards on then keep the car there.

- Keep your position ready before you ring. A postcode starting CV7 8 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van arriving and our van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, about how many litres, plus if the car has started. These three replies settle the entire visit.

Do not run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through that injection pump in real volume on the road in, and the drive back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is okay. There's no need to stand over the Volkswagen Tiguan at Bermuda Park while the work gets done, and we'd much rather speak to you tonight than learn on Monday.

## Can petrol be pumped from a diesel on a forecourt?

The work kicks off at a forecourt, usually. Often enough it ends on site as well.

Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that's normally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the site.

Nowhere but a garage can the mistake be caught with your motor still untouched.

The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and your filter require flushing as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still put it right where the vehicle is.

The attendants will usually offer to wheel the vehicle away from the pump so the next customer can get past. It is worth doing.

Shifting the car four spaces doesn't justify cranking it.

Car parks like the one outside Co-op Food are somewhere we work in frequently, and your fuel is hardly ever the tricky part. That bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height bar on the way in that determines if a van can access you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you phone, and which way the car is pointing. When we can't work next to the diesel Skoda Octavia we will roll the car without starting it — and that is not fussiness about a handful of seconds of running. Each start primes your fuel system and pulls more of that mixture out of your tank and on to the pump, and so a motor moved twice into a roomier spot has silently become a worse job than one left exactly where it stopped.

## Parts our vans reach near New Arley

New Arley is a rural village, and we get out to it and to anywhere near it on the same runs: Hill Top, Old Arley, Astley, Tippers Hill and Wood End.

There are pages for the majority of locations in Warwickshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come.

Call us and check instead of assuming — borders particularly, and wherever the satnav might get wrong.

This map shows the area the page includes.

Your car does not need to move to us. Our technicians work across all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Your diesel Peugeot 3008 will have seemed perfectly ordinary on the way back from Arley Primary Academy. They all do, and that is the trap with petrol in a diesel rather than the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol car and it mostly won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, idles and drives off as though nothing has happened — meanwhile the high-pressure pump does its work without the lubrication your fuel is supposed to be supplying. Nothing alerts you, since from behind the wheel there's nothing to warn you about. Ring us with approximately how far you travelled and how hard you drove it; the second one matters more than the first.

## Stranded on the roadside near New Arley

The opportunity to pull in anywhere safe doesn't fall to everybody.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Charles Street because you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.

Safe where you are? Wait beside it. Not safe? Step out and away from it.

Never fire it up to reach a better place. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that blend deeper into your fuel system.

A technician heading to an inconvenient spot is no problem for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than driving on.

What we will ask is if that trip there was short and cold, since that is where petrol is least likely to burn fully — and anything that does not burn can slip past the rings then into the engine oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Mercedes E-Class standing in the car park by Wagon Load of Lime with a tank of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing worsens while it waits, and so park it there overnight then call us next morning.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 3 miles out of New Arley, the local M6 is what matters now.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they come are normally a drop in power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our engineers bring differs.

## A little about New Arley

New Arley is a village in Warwickshire, situated inland at an elevation of 157 metres, approximately 7 miles from Coventry and 92 miles from London. New Arley has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterized by terraced homes. New Arley is close to nearby places such as Hill Top, Old Arley, and Astley, and has a population of around 1367 residents.

## What follows when our engineers arrive with you around New Arley

- The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.

- Out flows the contaminated fuel.

- What is left in the system shouldn't be what caused the issue, so your fuel lines get flushed and the filter cleared.

- Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- The motor is started and tested to be sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

From there, you're ready to set off.

Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed early, and as everything is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around New Arley is a different matter

Never fire it up: that first step applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this fault itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and deposits instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate New Arley page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in New Arley

We cannot put one figure on this page frankly, as this job is not one job. What moves it:

- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and whether a technician can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Drain it then put new diesel in — that is the suggestion you will get, usually from someone confident, and it is only half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Hyundai Tucson near St Wilfrid and it would start, which is what makes the advice sound sensible. What happens next is the problem: the motor at once draws the petrol left sitting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead. Our engineers flush your system and take the fuel filter off where your vehicle has a working one, which is the difference between your car being fixed and the vehicle only starting.

## Petrol in diesel queries from New Arley drivers

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around New Arley?

A good portion of this work gets done there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the site's permission our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts locally regularly.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend sucked through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then keep the car off.

Driving is what moves the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more regularly than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back.

That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to live with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Waiting next to it?

Keep it switched off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from a lot more often than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.

Across Warwickshire and around New Arley: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
