# New Sharlston: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the motor as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car needs while the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has ended up in New Sharlston or the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Contact us so our technicians will show you what follows after that before you attempt any more.

## Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Do not start the car. Fired up all the same? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually won't run, so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for a couple of miles. People get that confused. It's not okay — the fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. That is why the car's ignition stays off as well — flick it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for precisely those components.

- Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes — so don't add diesel on top to weaken it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort out, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Long Row? Hazards on, and leave the car there. A difficult spot works for us better than a started diesel.

- Know where you are before calling. A postcode beginning WF4 1, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, about how many litres, plus if the car has started. Those three replies decide the entire visit.

## Clearing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

Much of the work starts at the pump, so a good part of that ends up done at one.

The drain usually gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at JET? Given the owner's consent, that is somewhere we work, and routinely.

Before the engine has started — the forecourt is the only setting this is caught.

Fuel pulled out of that tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is started and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and the fuel lines as well as the tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our technicians put it right where your car sits. What determines it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The staff will normally help you wheel the car out from the pump so the next driver can get past. That's worth doing.

Shifting the car four spaces does not warrant firing it.

## Areas our team cover in New Sharlston

The same runs carry us to Warmfield, Woodhouse Common, Goosehill, Sharlston Common and Streethouse besides New Sharlston, which is a rural village.

Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and most towns around West Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Close to the border, or anywhere your phone gets wrong? Call us to check instead of presuming.

Use our map for the area included on this page.

Your vehicle doesn't need to move to us. We work throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

A passer-by will tell you to shift the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later. Do not. A misfilled diesel Ford Focus on the zig-zags outside Sharlston Community School is an inconvenience; the same car started three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. Each restart primes the fuel lines and drags more petrol through the filter then into the pump. Leave it there, let everyone moan, and ring us.

## New Sharlston: broken down wherever you pulled up

Not everybody has a decent place to stop.

If you worked it out after setting off and landed on the verge of Crossley Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that is a common call for us instead of an odd one.

Safe where you are? Stay by it. Not okay? Move out and clear of it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

However tricky the spot, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for the car than driving on.

The parts that should be getting oiled are grinding instead, and the vehicle gives no sign of that: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and moves off perfectly well. Chance the trip home from The Plough? Not a chance. Call us then leave the Mercedes C-Class where it is.

## Run it already? Pull over, then check this

This is where the M62 matters, under 3 miles from New Sharlston.

A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they arrive are normally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Pull off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and never restart the car to move it.

Long run? Anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in our van.

Nothing is getting worse while it stands. Whatever your diesel Peugeot 3008 did on the way to Warmfield Common, it's doing none of that now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but never drive the car home to buy yourself any.

## About New Sharlston

New Sharlston is a small village in West Yorkshire, situated near the city of Wakefield and surrounded by nearby places such as Warmfield and Woodhouse Common. New Sharlston has a population of around 502 people and is characterized by its predominance of terraced housing. New Sharlston sits at an elevation of 66 metres, in a relatively low-lying area of inland Yorkshire. New Sharlston is located approximately 3 miles from Wakefield and 159 miles from London.

## Once our engineers arrive with you around New Sharlston: what follows

- Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- Away goes the contaminated fuel.

- What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what caused the trouble, and so the fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleared.

- The fuel system gets bled, on clean diesel.

- It's started with new diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running smoothly.

After that it's ready to drive away.

There is no need for a workshop at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught quickly, lasting damage is very rare.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in New Sharlston is a distinct job

Never fire it up: that opening rule stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own New Sharlston page. Both are ours to deal with.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, an uneven idle, rattling: that's a misfilled diesel Kia Sportage telling you what is wrong. Never restart it to find a better location — turn off where you have stopped, close to Kirkthorpe Community Centre or anywhere else.

## New Sharlston prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

We can't put one number on this page frankly, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can safely get to your car and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range.

If it's not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Drain it then put fresh diesel in — that's the suggestion you will get, generally from a person certain, and it's half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Volvo XC60 near Sharlston Community Centre and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound reasonable. What takes place next is the problem: the motor at once sucks the petrol left sitting in the fuel filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, because draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. We flush the system and take the filter off where your vehicle has a workable one, which is the difference between the vehicle being repaired and the vehicle only starting.

## Petrol in diesel questions from New Sharlston drivers

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in New Sharlston?

A good portion of this work takes place there, so yes.

Our technicians work at Shell and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the station's consent — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether we can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

What decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through the system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Driving is what moves the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more often than people assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different fault and it does not put back what petrol has thinned.

Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Waiting next to it?

Leave it shut off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, and let the car stay that way.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
