# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in New Town?

Never start the engine. If the fuel is still inside the tank and the engine has not turned over, a drain is almost always all it requires — and that's decided in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, throughout New Town and the rest of Somerset, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

Our team shall tell you what the next stage is. Ring us — that goes before everything else.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- While you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. This is why you do not fire it up, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it combusts it greases your injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, which pulls that petrol out of the tank then into just those parts.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so do not put diesel on top to thin it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort, and we'd much rather drive to an odd spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Newtown, turn your hazards on and leave it there.

- Before you call, work out your position. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning DT9 5 — that's what settles whether our van arrives or circles.

- Three facts determine the entire visit: the fuel you tipped in, the ballpark quantity involved, and if anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Taking it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has pushed real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return trip would close to double the figure to no end. The Volkswagen Passat can sit at Sherborne perfectly safely. Call from the platform if simpler; standing over us while we work isn't necessary.

## Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on the forecourt?

Plenty of this job starts at a pump, which means a large chunk of it ends up completed there.

If you are still at the forecourt at Valero, that's usually where the drain happens — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission.

Before the motor has started — the forecourt is the single place it is stopped.

The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys settle how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where your car stands.

Move the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they generally will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Moving it four spaces doesn't merit starting it.

## New Town plus the towns near it

These same rounds carry us to Kingsbury Regis, Milborne Port, Oborne, Milborne Wick and Goathill along with New Town, which is a residential suburb.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and the majority of places across Somerset have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Presuming is the mistake to skip, especially on the boundary or somewhere your phone fails. Contact us to ask.

That map shows the patch this page includes.

We work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.

## Stuck by the kerbside near New Town

Not everyone finds a decent place to pull in.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Combe Hill since you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Safe there? Remain beside it. Not safe? Move out and away from it.

Don't fire it up to reach a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into your fuel system.

However awkward the location, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

The local M5 is the road that matters now, and it runs under 25 miles from New Town.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are typically a drop in power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Never restart it to reposition. Get off at the next safe exit and turn off.

It alters what our technicians bring, so mention it when you ring: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off then call us. Fine on the way out to The Grove, gutless on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol thins diesel; thinner fuel slips past the precision components that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel Ford Kuga went, the less of that pressure it held.

## New Town itself

New Town is a suburban area in Somerset, situated on the riverside with an elevation of 109 metres. New Town lies near several nearby places, including Kingsbury Regis, Milborne Port, and Oborne, and is approximately 18 miles from the city of Wells. New Town has a population of around 1326 people and is characterised by semi-detached housing. New Town is also relatively distant from London, at around 108 miles away.

## When our engineers arrive with you in New Town: what happens

- Three things get established before any price — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- The polluted fuel is drawn from the tank.

- Our technicians clean your fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what is remaining in the fuel system isn't what created the issue.

- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.

- Our technicians start it and confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

We do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been noticed quickly, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

Emptying your Citroen C3, changing the fuel filter where there is a workable one, purging the lines, putting clean fuel through the whole circuit: that's this job, and it is shaped by the worst of it sitting in the fuel lines instead of in the tank by this point. Three things help when you call from close to St John the Evangelist — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can stand next to without blocking the road, and whether your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual location our technicians work, and so the location itself is hardly ever the problem. A narrow parking space beats a vehicle driven somewhere more handy.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in New Town is a distinct matter

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is the same — do not crank it — but the fault is not.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate New Town page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Switch off where you have stopped, and don't restart it to find somewhere better — near Cross House or anywhere at all. Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a misfilled diesel Vauxhall Insignia telling you what is wrong.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in New Town

What shifts the price is listed below, as the job is not one job and we can't truthfully put a single price on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much your tank holds.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a technician.

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range.

Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

By this point your tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in the filter, the lines, the pump and its rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Volvo XC60 that made it close to Milborne Port Library needs your system flushed, not cleared.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in New Town

## I am on a forecourt around New Town. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it's where a good portion of this work happens.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend sucked through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

It is salvageable far more frequently than motorists assume, even though driving is what moves the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a change and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Afterwards? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Standing next to it?

Do not turn your engine back on.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then let the vehicle remain that way.

This is recoverable from a lot more often than people assume, and a still, cold car is the best place to be in.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in New Town and throughout Somerset.
