# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in New Town? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout New Town and the remainder of Tyne and Wear. The first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While the motor has not yet been started and the petrol is still inside the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much went in.

Our engineers will explain what your next move is. Call us — this happens before anything else.

## What to try next about petrol in a diesel

- While you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear. This is why you don't crank it, and why you do not depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the part motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Leave the ignition be too. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it greases that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime that system, which carries that petrol out of that tank and into exactly those parts.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A vehicle that has never moved is the quickest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on John Street? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. A tricky location works for us better than a started diesel.

- The van arriving rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting DH5 8, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Have both prepared before you phone.

- What was put in, roughly how many litres, and also if the engine has fired — those three replies determine your whole visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Phone us before you collect it. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Passat this morning, and it at Seaham ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, and any harm came on the run in, when the pump was taking diesel that petrol had thinned.

## On the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

Most of this work starts at a forecourt, so a good part of that ends up done at one.

We work on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement, so if you're still at Tesco that is normally where the drain gets done.

A forecourt is the single location the mistake gets stopped before your engine has run.

The few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key decide how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter require rinsing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where the vehicle sits.

The attendants will normally offer to push it out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing.

Shifting it four spaces does not warrant starting the engine.

## Can our engineers serve your corner of New Town?

These same trips take us to Houghton-le-Spring, Broom Hill, Rainton Bridge, Grasswell and Sunniside as well as New Town, which is a residential suburb.

We do come. The names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of places around Tyne and Wear, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Close to the border, or anywhere your phone gets wrong? Phone to check instead of presuming.

Check our map for the ground shown here.

We operate by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and the vehicle never needs to come to us.

Move the car out of that gateway and fix it later — that's what someone will say, and it's wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags outside Gillas Lane Primary Academy, a misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia is a hassle and nothing worse. Started three more times for courtesy, it is no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, as priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes through the fuel filter on to the pump. Let people moan. Give us a call.

## New Town: stranded wherever you pulled up

Not everybody gets the opportunity to pull over somewhere suitable.

Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Cragside Court because you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Okay there? Wait by it. Not safe? Move out and away from it.

Don't fire it up to get to a nicer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into your fuel system.

Driving on causes the car far more harm than a van heading out to a difficult spot, and that is no trouble for us.

Your Peugeot 308 remains where it is in the car park at The Copt Hill for the whole job, which typically goes like this. First we ask what got in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since, given that much of the work depends on those answers. The tank is emptied of the contaminated blend, the lines are cleaned, and the filter comes off if it's a replaceable one. With fresh diesel in and your system primed, your car is started and tested, and once it's running correctly you pull away.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the local A1(M) comes into it — under 3 miles from New Town.

A misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are normally lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.

Never start it to reposition. Pull off at the first safe exit then turn off.

It alters what our engineers bring, so mention it when you ring: on a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.

Standing still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Rectory Park in that diesel Ford Focus is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the engine to find more of that.

## Where's New Town?

New Town is a suburban area located inland in Tyne and Wear, approximately 88 metres above sea level. New Town sits near the city of Sunderland, about 5 miles from the city centre, and is close to nearby places such as Houghton-le-Spring and Rainton Bridge. New Town has a population of around 4478 people and is characterised by predominantly semi-detached housing.

## What our engineers do when our engineers arrive with you in New Town

- Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- Out comes the contaminated mixture.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- Our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

That has the car ready to set off.

All of this is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around New Town?

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is the same — do not start the vehicle — yet this problem isn't.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own New Town page. Both are ours to deal with.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around New Town

We cannot put one number on this page frankly, since this job is not one job. What shifts it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much your tank can hold.

- The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Your filter, the lines, the pump and its rail: that's where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. So the tank is not where most of the trouble waits by this point, and a diesel Kia Sportage that made it near Seven Sisters round barrow needs the circuit cleared rather than drained.

## Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around New Town

## Fuel drains on a New Town petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a fair part of this work gets done.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like JET is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more frequently than people assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned.

Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

No. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Standing next to it?

Turned off is how the car stays.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and still, a car is in the best place available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Tyne and Wear and around New Town: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
