# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in New Wood? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across New Wood and the rest of Staffordshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While the motor has not been started and the petrol is still in that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much got in.

Just one ring our way is plenty: we can explain what comes after this. Do it straight away.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Do not start it — and never depend on it if it does start. This is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel typically just will not run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, ticks over and drives away without complaint for several miles. It is not okay. It is wearing out your fuel system whenever you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition stays off also — turn it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for exactly those components.

- Never pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it just leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has never moved is the quickest one to deal with, and our team would sooner drive to a tricky location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Hyperion Road, put the hazards on then leave the car there.

- Have your position prepared before you dial. A postcode that starts DY7 6 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and the van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what got in, about how much, and whether the motor has been turned over. The responses decide whatever comes after.

Never run it home. The commute has already forced a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Golf, and the trip back would about double it for no reason at all. Phone us from the platform if that is quicker. We never need you hovering over the car at Stourbridge Town whilst we work, and we would very much rather hear from you tonight than find out on Monday.

## At the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

A big share of this work gets done at a pump, because that is where it mostly kicks off.

Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that's usually where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the site.

A filling station is the only place the mistake gets caught before the engine has run.

The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for your key determine how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and our engineers can still put it right where the vehicle is.

Staff will usually pitch in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next driver get past. Take the assistance.

Moving it four bays does not merit starting the engine.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off outside Aldi now. Time elapsed isn't the thing we need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.

## Places our team cover around New Wood

As a village, New Wood has a regular visit, whilst the places round about go along on that same run: Wollaston and Amblecote, Wordsley and Prestwood, Lawns Wood.

Not on this list? That means nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and most places around Staffordshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

On the boundary, or somewhere the satnav misreads? Phone and ask rather than presuming.

The ground the page spans appears on our map.

Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is ground we serve, and none of that needs your vehicle to come to us.

Nothing warns you, because from behind the wheel there is nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt completely normal on the way back from St James's CofE Primary School, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel rather than the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor generally refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, ticks over, drives off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump does its work without the lubrication its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

## Stuck by the roadside in New Wood

Some people have no sensible spot to pull in whatsoever.

A routine call for us instead of an odd one: noticed after setting off, finished up along the verge on Ridge Wood Avenue or at a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Whether you wait by the car or keep away from it hangs on if staying there feels safe.

Never fire it up to reach a better spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that blend deeper into the fuel system.

A van heading to a tricky location is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for the car than pressing on.

Straightforward job, this one — till someone takes it home. A diesel Ford Focus parked outside Foresters Arms with petrol in the tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so park the vehicle then phone once it is light. Expect a query about that run there, though. Brief and cold is exactly where petrol fails to burn, and what won't burn can work past the rings then into the sump.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 10 miles from New Wood, your M5 is what matters here.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.

Take the first exit that's safe, stop there, and do not restart it to move it.

Long run? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in the van.

## All about New Wood

New Wood is a village in Staffordshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 99 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. New Wood lies near several other villages, including Wollaston, Amblecote, and Wordsley, and is approximately 8.6 miles from Wolverhampton. New Wood has a population of around 1572 residents, who enjoy a relatively quiet location, despite being within commuting distance of larger cities. New Wood is also around 109.3 miles from London, making it a potential base for those who need to travel to the capital,

## What our technicians do when our technicians arrive with you in New Wood

- The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.

- Our engineers empty the tank of all the contaminated mixture.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.

- Our engineers put clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- The engine is turned on and checked to confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

After that it's ready to drive away.

We do all of it wherever your car has ended up, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been spotted soon, it is very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Audi A6 parked close to Wollaston Evangelical Church scarcely two streets on. Phone us, and leave the car off. A short drive does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the fuel filter and the pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence rinsing your lines rather than only clearing the tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around New Wood?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the engine stays off — while the problem beneath it is a separate one altogether.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate New Wood page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in New Wood?

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what varies it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.

- The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and if our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

## Questions we get about petrol in diesel around New Wood

## I am on a forecourt in New Wood. Can you drain it on the spot?

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the site's consent our engineers attend BP and the other forecourts locally all the time.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture pulled through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving takes the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you is not restarting the car.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

## Still with your car?

The motor stays off.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off and leave it off.

A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than drivers assume.

Draining wrongly fuelled vehicles, New Wood and the rest of Staffordshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
